Seattle completely dominates Patriots in dress rehearsal game
To begin last season, New England inexplicably got blown out by a Chicago Bears team that they showed for the rest of the year that they were considerably better than.

The silver lining in Thursday's blowout is that New England already exorcised their early season blunder of a performance in the preseason as the Seattle Seahawks routed the Patriots 34-7 in completely dominating fashion.

Russell Wilson completed 87 percent of his passes for 275 yards, including a touchdown pass to running back Jerrion Ealy. The second-year back also had a rushing touchdown and rushed for 66 yards in addition to starter Chris Carson's 66 yard on the ground.

While Seattle's offense was humming, New England's first team offense was stalling despite playing the starters for the first three quarters. With Jakobi Meyers out with an injury and Charleston Rambo not playing due to undisclosed reasons, Mac Jones found Braxton Berrios four times for 54 yards but had little success elsewhere. He finished the game 10 of 23 for 126 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions.

The Good
1. Despite being held to 3.1 yards per carry, Damien Harris had a good performance and showed explosiveness in the first quarter before the offense got bogged down. Kenny McIntosh also impressed with 43 yards on six carries.

2. The defense had a goal-line stand early in the game but besides that, tough performance all across.

3. It came in garbage time but New England's best play of the game and only touchdown came on Washington's 35-yard touchdown where he outleaped a defender for the touchdown in Herculean fashion.

Despite playing just the fourth quarter, Washington led the team with 59 yards on four receptions with Matt Ryan at quarterback. It's a shame Washington didn't get many first team snaps with Mac and the rest of the offense as he might have earned himself some starter reps following his preseason performance.

The Bad
1. Where does it start? Perhaps the sequence that turned the game on its head after New England got a stop to open the game and then was rolling on offense behind Harris' hard running, including a third-down play where he picked up the first snap if not for Jason Cabinda's holding call which brought it back. On the next play, James White dropped a pass which led to a punt and Seattle's offense got cooking after that.

The offense in general was bad with drops by Hunter Henry, Parris Campbell and Kendrick Bourne along with a missed field goal by Quinn Nordin, mediocre offensive line play and some misfires by Mac.

2. As bad as the offense was, the defense might have been even worse after Quinnen Williams left the game with a shoulder injury during that goal-line stand. Jaire Alexander was beat several times and Seattle continuously was able to pick up easy completions to matriculate down the field with no resistance and certainly no pass rush.

3. It was a tough night for the defense and especially for the two rookies, Malachi Moore and Trez Marshall. Similar to the Detroit game, Marshall was bullied by bigger interior offensive linemen and got washed out of a lot of plays.

Moore replaced Jordan Poyer in the second half and missed two tackles and gave up three completions, two of which were for first downs and one of them was on third down.

Patriots finalize 53-man roster, release depth chart
The New England Patriots have trimmed their roster to 53 men and have released the 2023 depth chart for the team's primetime season opener against the Miami Dolphins.

Among the cuts was veteran linebacker Kyle Van Noy who won two Super Bowls with the team in 2016 and 2018. Van Noy saw his role decreased in 2022, going from 74 tackles the previous season to just 20 last season. New England is eating approximately $600,000 in dead money by releasing the veteran.

The team also released former third round pick tight end Dalton Keene.

Notable omissions on the depth chart include receiver Jakobi Meyers and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams who suffered injuries in the preseason that will most likely extend into the regular season. In their place are Braxton Berrios and Andrew Brown, respectively.

New England additionally signed receiver Tutu Atwell to their active roster following his release from the Los Angeles Rams and signed former Dallas Cowboys receiver Josh Johnson to their practice squad.

Franchise Gameplay Restrictions
- No switching players on offense or defense after the snap with exception being on offense during designed jump ball situations (ie goal-line fade).
- No unusual moving of defensive players pre-snap (ie moving a player with deep third responsibility close to the LOS)
- No audibling with first year starters at QB for offense and MLB/S on defense. No hot routes allowed on offense or defense. Defense allowed to shift to adjust to offense formation or game situation.
- No audibling on the road.
- Audibling is limited to quick audibles (ie: run play, quick pass, man coverage) only under the following circumstances:
- Defense is overloaded to one side. QB is allowed to flip the run play or audible to another play using quick audibles.
- Defense is playing press coverage on a WR screen/bubble play. QB is allowed to audible to a run or another pass.
- Defense is showing blitz on a run headed towards the player(s) showing blitz. QB is allowed to a pass play.
- Defense is playing single high safety on a called run play. QB is allowed to audible to a pass.
- Offense is lining up in an empty set on a play where a blitz is called. Defense is allowed to audible out of the blitz.
- Offense is lining up in the wildcat formation. Defense is allowed to audible to a blitz.
- Offense has overloaded one side of the football. Defense is allowed to audible to man coverage in order to match leverage.
- Allowed on offense to utilize the pre-snap coach snap (reveals play being run) once per play at home and cannot use it on the road.
- Cannot run same play more than twice in a single offensive drive.
- Cannot run read option play more than twice in a single offensive drive and option play cannot be called once past the opponent's 35-yard line.
- No huddle can only be used on offense within reason (game situation, stamina of players, personnel grouping, etc..) and outside of two-minute drill, can only be ran with multi-year starter at QB.
- Defense can only run base-plays when offense in no huddle and cannot change formations.
- Must mix up the snap cadence on offense in order to simulate real-game scenarios and be susceptible to false start penalties.
- Cannot use directional aim (left stick) when kicking. Must use kicking meter (right stick) as method to direct the kick.

Franchise Roster Management Restrictions
- Must prioritize using Practice Squad to handle mid-season injuries as opposed to free agents.
- Can only enter re-signing negotiations prior to off-season with one player rated 90-99, one played rated 80-89 and two players rated 70-79.
- During off-season, allowed to extend extension offer to one player of any rating who has not previously been negotiated with.
- Limited to two offers during off-season free agency to players rated over 85 overall. If team lost a player rated over 85 overall to free agency, team receives an additional offer to use.
- Limited to five offers during off-season free agency to players rated over 80 overall. If team lost a player rated over 80 overall to free agency, team receives an additional offer to use.
- No trading of players for draft picks once draft has begun.

Loaded on defense but offensively, could be limited with the options at receiver
