not sure what happened but if you notice, late in the game, they also started putting an OL at TE instead of Kelce too even though they didn't suffer any issues

The matchups that will decide the Patriots-Seahawks Super Bowl rematch
It's been ten years since "Malcolm, go!", words that forever changed the course of NFL history and two franchises as the New England Patriots would pull off the improbable win at Super Bowl XLIX with Malcolm Butler, then an unknown undrafted corner out of West Alabama, intercepting Seattle's Russell Wilson at the goal line to hand New England's it's first Super Bowl win since 2004.

The Patriots would go on to win two more while The Legion of Boom in Seattle would break up, never to return to football's biggest stage.

While the storyline all week has been a rematch from a decade ago, both New England and Seattle have new head coaches in Mike Tomlin and Sean McVay respectively and the only player on either roster that played in that game was quarterback Russell Wilson.

They've played each other twice, however, in 2024 with Seattle beating New England in the preseason 35-21 and the Patriots winning their regular season matchup 33-30 in a game that wasn't as close as the final score suggests thank to two late Seattle touchdowns. Here are the top matchups to watch heading into Super Bowl LIX.

  1. Seattle RB Jerrion Ealy vs. New England's rushing defense
Seattle running back Chris Carson rushed for 107 yards and a touchdown in the 24-14 win over San Francisco in the playoffs before leaving the game with an injury that would land him on the IR. Carson had rushed for 68 yards against New England in their regular season matchup, right around his 66.1 average on the entire season with twelve touchdowns.

The former fourth round pick, Ealy, hasn't had as much success as Carson, averaging just 3.5 yards per carry on the season and in his lone playoff start, he was held to 27 yards on nine carries with no explosive plays.

New England enters the game with the #1 ranked rushing defense and so far in the playoffs, they've gone against two elite running backs in Najee Harris and Nick Chubb, allowing 66 yards in both games. Ealy will need to hit some explosive ways to soften up that New England defense which will have defensive tackle Quinnen Williams back in the lineup after missing the AFC Championship Game.
    -
  2. New England CB Jaire Alexander vs. Seattle WR Kayshon Boutte
Boutte had a big game against Alexander in their last matchup with the former All-Pro surrendering one touchdown to the 2nd-year man out of LSU who finished the game with five receptions for 82 yards and two touchdowns.

Alexander has been up and down through the second half of the season, bouncing back from a tough outing against Cleveland with a solid performance against Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game. It'll be interesting to see if Alexander once again draws the matchup with Boutte or if New England decides to man him up with Roger McCreary whose been a stud as of late with near perfect PFF grades against Cleveland and Kansas City.
    -
  3. New England WR Charleston Rambo vs. Seattle's secondary
Even under McVay, Seattle still runs a lot of zone defense but at some point, you need to play man coverage and in their last matchup, Damon Arnette Jr. struggled with Rambo whose just flat out quicker than him.

When Seattle was in zone, Rambo was able to find the soft spots in the defense, burning them for 124 yards on four receptions and a touchdown. Arnette is their best man coverage guy and D.J. Reed Jr. is probably their best overall corner so it remains to be seen how Seattle chooses to attack a New England passing offense that is very hot and cold but more than capable of going off and winning a game with big plays down the field, specifically from Rambo and TE Darnell Washington.
    -
  4. Seattle interior offensive line vs. New England IDL Quinnen Williams
Christian Barmore and Akiem Hicks aren't no slouches either but the leader of that interior unit is Williams who sacked Russell Wilson two times in their last game and had three tackles for loss, scoring a PFF grade of 93, among his best of the season.

Williams is a disruptive force from up the middle and had his way with center Ethan Pocic out. Pocic is back in the lineup and leads a three-man unit that consists of Damien Lewis (third round pick from 2020) and Emil Ekiyor Jr. (second round pick from 2022). They're young but talented and need to have a much better showing this time around in order to keep Wilson upright and allow their running game to set the pace.
    -
  5. New England's running game vs. Seattle's rush defense
No one runs the football better than New England who led the NFL in rushing by a wide margin with 300 more rushing yards than the second place 49ers who have a mobile quarterback to enhance their running game.

Seattle's rush defense is ranked in the middle of the pack but had a really good showing in their week six matchup, holding New England to 116 yards on the ground. The magic number will be somewhere around there in the Super Bowl as Seattle will have a tougher task this time around with guard Michael Onwenu back in the lineup.

Kenny McIntosh struggled in the game and was held to less than a yard per carry and fumbled. McIntosh is the wild card in New England's backfield and he's starting to come on strongly, averaging over six yards per carry in the last two games and has caught at least three passes in five of New England's last five games.
