Titans sign former #1 pick Fisher to bolster OL

Tennessee drafted Dillon Radunz in the second round of the 2021 draft and hope he will be a future starter at RT but he's not ready just yet so the team was on the hunt for a veteran to help them improve the position right now.

Former first overall pick Eric Fisher was their first choice and they made it happen, agreeing to a one year deal worth around five million with a pile of incentives for playing time, starts and team statistical milestones.

Fisher was the Chiefs #1 pick in the 2013 draft. He played in Kansas City for eight seasons, starting 113 games before signing a one year deal with the Colts in 2021.

T.Y. Hilton follows Fisher to Tennessee

Tennessee has Julio Jones and A.J. Brown at the top of their WR depth chart and the duo were unsurprisingly their two leading receivers despite missing games. After them Josh Reynolds was third with 39 receptions. Tennessee and Reynolds could not agree to a new contract so the Titans found themselves in need at the position.

Enter T.Y. Hilton. Hilton was a third round pick by the Colts in 2012. At 32 he's likely nearing the end of his career but the Titans are hoping he has enough left in the tank to turn in a strong performance as the slot receiver.

Hilton caught 51 passes for 753 yards and three scores for the Colts in 2021.

His best season came in 2016 when he caught 91 passes for 1,448 yards and six scores. He was a pro bowl selection four times from 2014-2017.

Hilton's deal is for one year and like Fisher's it's loaded with incentives for playing time and performance.

Tennessee adds more at WR, trades for Scotty Miller

Scott Miller caught 13 passes in 2019 then caught 33 in 2020. Last season he saw his position on the depth chart drop behind a number of players and he only caught two passes.

Tennessee GM Jon Robinson made the call and now Miller is a Titan.

"Really excited for the opportunity." Miller, a 2019 sixth round pick from Bowling Green said of the move.

Miller is a small speedy receiver that should compliment Jones, Brown and Hilton nicely.

Expect to see less tight ends and fullbacks and more receiver heavy sets.

Analyzing top needs for Titans heading into the draft

The Titans front office managed to address a few of the teams needs in the first round of free agency but there are still some needs on the roster. Here's what we feel are the biggest needs heading into the draft. We expect some will be addressed during the draft while others will be filled by veterans and undrafted free agents in the coming weeks.

Backup QB
Tennessee let Logan Woodside walk and the only QB on the roster at this time is Ryan Tannehill. The team is looking for an upgrade behind him but could circle back to Woodside if needed. The draft is light on talent at QB so we're expecting a veteran to be brought in. Andy Dalton, Tyrod Taylor or Nick Foles could be an option in free agency while some have suggested checking with the Giants on Daniel Jones.

RB Depth
Despite signing Cordarrelle Patterson the Titans are still thin at the position. Derrick Henry, Patterson and Darrynton Evans are the only backs on the roster. Jeremy McNichols wanted to test free agency and is yet to sign anywhere so the team could still look to bring him back.

A fullback?
Khari Blasingame, now a New York Giant, played the third most FB snaps in the league over the past two seasons. Tennessee has a deeper WR group so there may be less call for a true fullback on the roster going forward. That being said a player who can fit at FB and TE or some other combination would be nice to add if the investment is reasonably small.

Tight End
Robinson when hard after David Njoku but missed. Anthony Firkser re-signed but Geoff Swaim and MyCole Pruitt weren't. The draft isn't big on top end talent but does have good complimentary players that should be available later on. There are a number of veterans available and the team has reportedly spoken with Jesse James and Adam Shaheen already.

OL Youth
Four of the Titans projected starters on the offensive line are over 30. Five of the eleven on the roster have one year left on their contracts. Dillon Radunz will hopefully be ready to start in 2023 but that still leaves a number of spots to potentially need to be filled.

NT Depth
Teair Tartt, Naquan Jones and Kyle Peko are the only true nose tackles on the roster. The three man front does allow for some flexibility with ends and tackles moving between positions but it would be nice to add another big space eater for depth and improvement behind Tartt.

BPA
Overall the Titans have a solid roster and are in a good position to be able to take the best player available or trade out of a pick to add draft capital in the future. "We're not opposed to stacking talent at positions where we are already strong." Robinson said. "You see it all the time with good teams. San Francisco on the defensive line, Kansas City at receiver. So if the right guys are there we'll pull the trigger."

Not many glaring needs. Looks like mostly fillers left. Two questions - is this real draft classes or auto-generated? And, what's the likelihood of trading picks for either a player or future picks (for when you may actually need them more)?

Generated class.
If I don't like a guy on the board at my pick I'll look to trade. We only have five picks so I'd like to use them if the players are there. Not super interested in trading 2022 picks for players. Maybe future picks.

Titans go BPA in first round, select Boise State CB Juan Bigby

The Titans nearly traded out of the first round when they received a call from an unidentified team looking to get into the bottom of the first round, presumably to pick Bigby, who dropped lower than expected.

“It was a solid offer.” Titans GM John Robinson explained. “We considered it but in the end we were excited to have a chance to draft Juan there.”

Bigby, a fifth year senior from Boise State, led the Mountain West in interceptions with five despite a number of teams avoiding throwing at him.

Bigby is the 7th CB off the board in the first round. The Jets picked Auburn's Justin McPhee 4th, the Eagles selected Joel Grant out of Syracuse 11th, the Broncos chose McPhee's teammate Thurman Judge with the 13th pick, the Patriots took Dalvin Michaels from Clemson with the 19th selection, Washington's Cortney Webb went to the Vikings at 21 and Northern Illinois' DeAndre Ford was taken by the Lions at 23.

“A lot of talent at the position in this draft.” Mel Kiper Jr. said after the pick. “After McPhee and Grant I had a lot of those other corners jockeying back and forth week to week. If Bigby as at a bigger school he could have snuck into the top ten and I expected him to be a top 15 pick.”

Bigby, listed at 6'2” and 181 pounds, is a solid tackler who doesn't shy away from contact. Along with his five interceptions he also forced three fumbles, recovering two. Always looking to make the most of a takeaway Bigby found the endzone three times in 2021.

Bigby was a solid punt and kick returner early on at Boise State before focusing exclusively on defense the past two seasons.

CB may or may not be a need for the Titans. They've moved on from Buster Skrine and Janoris Jenkins, who played the most and second most snaps at CB in 2021. The team is looking toward the future with Kristian Fulton, Caleb Farley, Elijah Molden and now Bigby expected to be the top contributors at the position in 2022. All four are 23 years old.
