Former Cardinals QB #11 and current Purdue Head Coach Jeff Brohm

Cardinals prepare for the return of the Brohms
Courier-Journal

Louisville, KY -- If there is any name assigned football royalty in Louisville, it's Brohm.

Oscar Brohm spent time as the starting quarterback for the Cardinals in 1968 and 1969. After college, he would have three sons: Greg, Jeff, and Brian. He coached all three sons in football all the way through high school as a Quarterbacks coach and Offensive Coordinator. All three had successful careers with Greg emerging as Trinity's star receiver, while Jeff and Brian had very successful high school careers with national powerhouse Trinity High School, who play their games fifteen minutes away from Cardinal Stadium.

Jeff and Greg went on to have successful playing careers with the Cardinals under college football legend Howard Schellenberger. Greg continued to have success at Wide Receiver and Jeff led the Cardinals to a 1993 Liberty Bowl victory. Greg went into business administration while Jeff had a seven year NFL career. Jeff would retire from playing after a shoulder injury in the XFL and became an assistant coach, returning home to Louisville in 2003

Jeff would serve as the Quarterbacks coach and coordinator for the Cardinals from 2003 to 2007. Brian starred for the Cardinals starting in 2002, and emerged as a Heisman canidate during his time with Louisville. Brian graduated from Louisville in 2006 and went on to have a seven year playing career in various leagues including the NFL. During this time, Jeff joined Howard Schellenberger's Florida Atlantic University staff as a Quartersbacks Coach and coordinator. Jeff would go on to serve as the head coach of the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers from 2014 to 2016, when he took over as head coach for the Purdue Boilermakers. Brian joined Jeff's WKU staff as a Quarterbacks coach, hoping to find success similar to his older brother's. In 2020, Brian served as head coach when Jeff was out with COVID-19 and won the game, giving us a mere glance at what's to come.

In the last few years, it has been, as nicely as we can put it, painful, to watch the to Cardinals offense, which was once led with such high honor by the Brohm brothers.

Over the last two seasons, no team has given the ball away more than the Cardinals. Is it a lack of experience from Evan Conley, or was it a lack of discipline from Gunter Brewer?

When a replacement was needed in Louisville, the Cardinals faithful felt there was no better time to bring a Brohm back to the Louisville football team. The job was practically Brian's. It was a no-brainer.

But then Brian rained on their Derby parade.

He pledged his allegiances to his brother and the Boilermakers.

"The time just isn't right."

Greg, Jeff, and Brian are all performing above expectations in each of the roles they've held at Western Kentucky and Purdue. At this point, a head coaching job offer could find itself coming Brian's way. Purdue's on the rise, led by HB King Doerue and green starting QB Michael Alaimo and a set of seasoned receivers, many feel that the Boilermakers and the Brohms' stocks can only go up, all while Louisville has struggled to find it's footing in the ACC.

Even with all of that being the case, Louisville fans were crushed by Brian's disinterest in a position on the staff and even one man burned his classic Brian Brohm UofL jersey. With Jeff Brohm reportedly turning down the head coaching position and now Brian Brohm declining a position as a coordinator, the time may now never be right.

Not only has the relationship between Brian Brohm and the University of Louisville soured, perhaps it has planted the seed for a budding rivalry between Louisville and Purdue, who will open their seasons against one another.

Scott Satterfield and Louisville's new offensive coordinator Mike Neu will be under the microscope all season. The goal is to score more and turn the ball over less. If they can coach the Cardinals to a victory against Purdue and the Brohms, it could be the start of a turnaround in Louisville everyone is hopeful to see.

Dez Melton? 75 spd 77 acc

We're pretty slow across the board on offense. Sometimes with my schedule I will play a few games ahead and just save all the information I need and make the posts and stuff whenever I am unable to play. I'm a couple games in and it's been my main gripe so far.

Better than beating Kentucky, probably.
