History of Number 2
The tradition of the number 2 jersey at Nicholls in 2024 began with one of the most dominant defensive players that college football had seen to that point in linebacker Roe Travillion. A junior college recruit from nearby Houma, Louisiana, Travillion embodied all that it meant to be a Nicholls Colonel – hard work, leadership, drive and a desire to be the best athlete, scholar and person on and off the field.

After a one-year hiatus in 2026 following Travillion’s graduation, the jersey was handed down to quarterback Tevin Parrish who began the tradition of the jersey passing to the player believed to be the best and most impactful player on the Colonels’ roster.

Each spring, players are nominated by the team and voted upon by the team’s coaching staff, the team and past wearers of the number.

Since Travillion first wore the jersey in 2024, there have been seven players have been awarded the number 2 including: Parrish, wide receiver Toran Hood, safety Naquan Bright, quarterback Johnny Bright, cornerback Andrew Douglas and defensive end Sean Prunty.

The number has grown in stature in recent years as it has been worn by not only the best players at Nicholls, but also some of the best players in college football.

Hood, the first of the players to have sustained success in the National Football League, said the lore of the number among former, present and future Colonels has accelerated in the past decade due to the likes of himself and the Bright brothers.

“I’m not even from Louisiana, but I’ll go back home and see kids wearing Nicholls jerseys with the number two because they know I wore it and I wear two in the league,” Hood said. “Both of the Bright brothers wear two in the league, and I know it’s a lot of kids from their hometown playing peewee wearing a two. Same thing with high school ball. Watch a Louisiana high school game and the best player wearing two. All the guys on the team now know that if you put that jersey on, you have to dominate or you better come out of it.”

To date, Toran Hood is the only player to be awarded the number as a freshman.

Since 2027, the Nicholls Athletic Foundation has auctioned the game worn jersey of the player wearing number 2 from that season’s LSU game with the proceeds benefitting Thibodaux-area charities and non-profit organizations. The record price for such a jersey was set in 2034 when a local businessman bought Johnny Bright’s jersey for $870,000. Bright would later win his record-setting third Heisman at the end of that season.
