Bruins land a top 20-athlete in San Diego's Braxton McCoy
Joseph Martinez -- SI.com Recruiting Analyst

Like many kids his age, Braxton McCoy was a fan of the Oregon Ducks in the mid 2010s that featured the likes of De'Anthony Thomas, LaMichael James and Marcus Mariota. McCoy is now headed to play for the man that made all of that possible.

The senior quarterback recruit, ranked within the top 20 at the 'athlete' position by SI All-American, announced his commitment to UCLA Saturday evening. Before going public with the pick on CBS Sports, the Clairemont (Calif.) High School star detailed why he picked the Bruins over Alabama, San Diego State, UNLV and Washington.

It was Chip Kelly's race to lose heading into a weekend official visit to Los Angeles, his second trip of the month, and the trip went down without a hiccup.

"It's a dream come true just to be able to play close to home and for a coach that I grew up watching," McCoy told Chris Matos. "It’s a great opportunity and I'm glad I get to do it.

"I kind of saw everything I needed to see on the visit and felt comfortable. It really just wrapped everything up for me. I just feel like they have a plan for me more than any other coaching staff."

Playing for Kelly was a big part of the pick.

"He really puts his players in a position to be successful," McCoy said. "He knows how to run an offense. That’s what I'm there for and that’s what I like. His track record shows he’s successful with it."

The Bruins have had high highs in 2021 on the field in an offense long commanded by Dorian Thompson-Robinson. The potential future face of the program sees himself in the thick of the race to replace DTR when the time comes.

"Dorian’s been pretty successful against high-level teams," he said. "That’s pretty much all I need to see is that the quarterback in that system is successful. He’s projected to be gone next year so there’s gonna be a competition.

"I’ll play when I'm ready and be in a good offensive system."

What attracted McCoy to UCLA was Kelly's plan to utilize McCoy as more than just a quarterback. Several other Power 5 programs such as Alabama, Arizona, Baylor, Colorado, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Utah offered McCoy a scholarship as a defensive back or a wide receiver, a testatement to his athleticism.

McCoy says he'll be enrolling at UCLA with the prospect of eventually being a starting quarterback but until then, he'll be a gadget for Kelly to deploy as he sees fit. Kelly became McCoy's primary recruiter following offensive coordinator Justin Frye's departure to Ohio State, a move that bolstered UCLA's chances to land McCoy as he became in constant contact with the Bruins head coach. During his official visit, McCoy spent some time with Kelly in person watching film cut-ups of how Kelly plans to use McCoy who rushed for over 1,000-yards as a senior on top of throwing for 33 touchdowns.

McCoy has been a riser in the rankings since transferring back to Clairemont for his senior season after spending the past two seasons on defense at Bishop Gorman (NEV) and IMG Academy (FLA), ending his senior season as the 17th ranked athlete in the nation. McCoy plans to enroll early at UCLA in January and compete for the backup spot along with redshirt freshman Ethan Garbers.

True freshman Braxton McCoy among standouts at spring showcase
Eric Lee -- Los Angeles Daily News Sports Writer

On the field Saturday at Drake Stadium, it was just like another practice for the UCLA football team. But with several hundred fans in the stands, music pumping and television cameras hovering, the spring showcase provided a different atmosphere for the Bruins as they enter the final week of spring practice.

“It was just practice on TV,” quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson said.

But the fifth-year passer added the showcase was “super fun” to be in front of fans and have new faces watch practice either in-person or on the Pac-12 Network.

It was the perfect setting for true freshman Braxton McCoy, whose a man without a position but far from a player without a role. McCoy lined up at quarterback at times during the red zone period, caught a few passes from the slot during 7-on-7 action and during the team's two minute drill, McCoy even lined up in the backfield next to Thompson-Robinson.

Opportunities are ripe for McCoy, who was a high school quarterback that was recruited by other programs as a defensive back or receiver. UCLA is without a true WR1 after Kyle Philips declared for the draft. McCoy says he's up to 183 pounds now and wants to be in the 190-range at the start of the season. One of Chip Kelly's recruiting pitch to McCoy was the plan to use him as a hybrid between Taysom Hill with the New Orleans Saints and De'Anthony Thomas during his time at Oregon.

There is no depth chart in spring practice, according to Kelly, who tempered questions about whether McCoy could be the Game 1 starter at receiver or running back.

“I don’t think anybody cares when you get to next fall and get ready to play a game who started where in [spring practice],” Kelly said, "He's learning the offense, learning the playbook and trying to get better every day, that's all we ask of him or any of our players."

very low break tackle due to his slight frame and not the most elusive with the ball in his hands, more so straight line speed. Should make his NFL prospects interesting once we get there
