UCLA: Kelly makes it official, names McCoy starting QB heading into spring practices
Eric Lee -- Los Angeles Daily News Sports Writer

After struggling to get it going in his first few seasons in Westwood, Chip Kelly and the UCLA Bruins have put together back to back promising seasons, winning ten games and the Pac-12 championship last season while appearing in the Rose Bowl.

With starting quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson gone, Kelly has wasted no time in naming his successor.

"Braxton [McCoy] is our starter at quarterback heading into the spring," said Kelly in his post National Signing Day press conference, "We're a long way from the beginning of the season and a lot of things can change but right now, he's our starter and he'll be taking starter reps and try to get him ready for the season opener and get things rolling."

McCoy was a Freshman and First Team All-American as a true freshman...at receiver after making the switch from quarterback to receiver last spring. McCoy replaced DTR in the Rose Bowl at halftime, a move that Kelly has maintained was pre-planned and not due to DTR's performance.

While undersized, McCoy has looked fluid and natural at quarterback, a position he not only played during his freshman and senior year in high school but also continued to take reps at while at UCLA during practice and had packages throughout the year in games where he'd line up at quarterback.

With the switch, UCLA might be gaining a dynamic athlete under center but they're losing their best receiver on top of also losing senior tight end Greg Dulcich and receiver Chase Cota, two of DTR's top targets last season. UCLA is also replacing four of the five starters along the offensive line.

McCoy was expected to potentially compete at quarterback with Ethan Garbers but the redshirt freshman transferred to San Diego State back in December. UCLA was also in the hunt for five-star quarterback Andre Howard before his commitment to the Cal Bears.

Bruins passing game still a work in progress, evident in spring showcase
Eric Lee -- Los Angeles Daily News Sports Writer

A little over a year ago, Braxton McCoy and Kazmeir Allen were competitors, battling for the starting slot receiver role in UCLA's offense. Now, Allen is McCoy's security blanket as the former All-American is making the switch back to quarterback.

There were plenty of good on Saturday as UCLA wrapped up spring practices with a showcase that featured mainly drills that were open to the public. Under head coach Chip Kelly, the Bruins have gone away from the traditional format of a scrimmage and instead it's more an open practice that fans and the media alike are allowed to attend.

Under these settings, which dates back to the past three spring periods, McCoy's abilities as a dual-threat quarterback were clearly muted as there were no designated quarterback runs and anytime McCoy would scramble out of the pocket, the play would be blown dead.

The sophomore quarterback looked accurate in the short to intermediate throws but on anything deep, it was far from a pretty sight as the ball would flutter in the air and on two occasions, end up in the hands of a defensive player. He did seem to have a good connection with Allen as well as true freshman Mike Payne, the six-foot-three former safety that made the move to receiver as the room desperately needed to add some top end speed.

McCoy also hooked up a few times during the 7-on-7 period with juniors Kam Brown and Matt Sykes who appear to be the starters on the outside. Brown started all fourteen games last season and caught 27 passes while Sykes caught nine passes as a backup.

Allen, who rotated earlier in the season with McCoy in the slot before McCoy became a full time starter, was the more active of all of the receivers with a few snags in the red-zone period.

Bruins hit the ground running as prep for NC State fully underway
The UCLA Bruins returns just two starters -- running back Zach Charbonnet and offensive guard Duke Clemens -- on offense from last year's ten win squad and they won't have much time to get their bearings together with a tough test in the opener against N.C. State.

UCLA released their first official depth of the season with very little surprises as former All-American receiver Braxton McCoy was named the starter at quarterback back in the spring. The Bruins are the third favorite to win the Pac-12 this season according to Caesars Sportsbook behind USC and Oregon.
