‣ NFL 2024 Regular Season, Week 14 - Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas, Nevada
(4-8) New Orleans Saints at Las Vegas Raiders (4-8)

NO | 6 | 0 | 3 | 3 | 12
LV | 0 | 6 | 0 | 14 | 20

Raiders rely on special teams, defense to extend Saints' losing streak
Even on the prime time stage, Raiders interim head coach Antonio Pierce makes no qualms about riding his defense and special teams to a win against a reeling New Orleans Saints team.

"It's the NFL," Pierce said after the game, "You enjoy every win and we're going to enjoy this one."

The Raiders didn't reach the endzone until the ten minute mark in the fourth quarter with Miyan Williams' touchdown run to give the Raiders their first lead of the night before Laviska Shenault Jr's touchdown put the finishing touches on a 20-12 win over the Saints on Sunday night.

The Williams touchdown was set up thanks to a blocked punt by Raiders safety Tre'von Moehrig, giving a struggling Raiders offense the ball on the Saints 23-yard line, trailing 12-6. After the touchdown to take the lead, the Raiders special teams unit would make another big play, forcing a fumble on a kick return by Hunter Renfrow to give the Raiders' offense another short field, this time from the Saints 9-yard line which would end with a seven-yard touchdown from Justin Fields to Shenault Jr. for the eight point lead with 4:38 remaining.

It was a tough night for Fields in his first game in over a month, throwing two first half interceptions and completing just 53 percent of his passes for 131 yards. The Saints' top fifteen rushing defense also thwarted the Raiders potent rushing offense, limiting them to just 3.3 yards per carry. The Raiders passing offense was also hampered by injuries at the wide receiver position throughout the game, including top receiver Tory Horton leaving the game with a chest injury.

The Saints offense, led by rookie quarterback Shedeur Sanders, would have two more possessions to tie the game but the first ended on a punt and the Saints' last drive of the game ended on a 7-yard scramble by Sanders on a 4th and 10 to turn the ball over on downs.

Sanders was the slightly more efficient of the two quarterbacks, throwing for 277 yards with no turnovers but no touchdowns and completing just 45 percent of his passes.

Jordan Love, Green Bay Packers continue to struggle under first-year head coach Brian Callahan
After bringing in a brand new coaching staff, led by former Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan who replaced Matt LaFleur as the Packers head coach, Green Bay got off to a 4-0 start to the season with the offense averaging 34.5 points per game.

Since their week four win against Houston, the Packers have dropped seven straight games and have failed to score over 30 points during that same stretch with Green Bay's offense averaging just 22.6 points per game.

The Packers rushing offense is ranked dead last in the NFL due in large part to starting running back Aaron Jones missing six games this season due to injuries. When he has played, the former Pro Bowler is averaging just 3.6 yards per carry and 52.4 rushing yards per game, his lowest average since his rookie season.

Jordan Love hasn't been the main issue with the fifth-year quarterback averaging 252.8 yards per game along with 25 touchdowns to his twelve interceptions. However, the Packers figure to have a top five pick in next spring's draft and after passing on a quarterback last draft to select right tackle J.C. Latham (8 sacks allowed), there could be appetite within the organization to start over with a rookie quarterback as they have yet to extend Love's contract which runs out after this season.

Way Too Early Las Vegas Raiders Mock Draft: Vegas needs more steak to their sizzle
It hasn't always been pretty but with four weeks to go in the season, the Las Vegas Raiders sit at the bottom of the AFC West division but within striking distance of the seventh seed to sneak into the playoffs as a wild card.

While it remains unlikely that they do so, the fact that it's even a discussion is a testament to the job that interim head coach Antonio Pierce and the remaining staff have done since the firing of head coach Josh McDaniels earlier in the season which should have been a death blow, especially after quarterback Justin Fields missed several games with an injury.

Even if the Raiders somehow make the playoffs, this remains a flawed roster that needs a deep overhaul on the defensive side and some infusion of top end talent on offense after trading away their two best offensive players -- Josh Jacobs and Davante Adams -- in the last twelve months. They'll have the chance to do so in next spring's draft.

Projected Draft Picks (subject to change)
‣ Round 1, Pick 7
Image LB Harold Perkins | 6'1", 230lbs | 1st ranked OLB

It's tough to project fit since the Raiders could decide to move on from their interim staff this off-season but Perkins' versatility allows him to fit just about any defense.

Perkins Jr. possesses the raw tools to succeed in various roles on the field. His agility and athleticism allow him to drop back in coverage, making him a valuable asset in defending against the pass. Moreover, his speed and tenacity are assets when rushing the quarterback, reflecting his well-rounded approach to the game.

Having the trio of Maxx Crosby, Tyree Wilson and Harold Perkins Jr. to deploy at various positions will be a quick and sure-fire way to improve the Raiders defense both against the pass and against the run. The team likes using Wilson inside more and the drafting of Perkins Jr. would allow them to do so without losing too much production at EDGE which has been the case this season when Wilson is inside.

‣ Round 1, Pick 11 (via DAL)
Image CB Will Johnson | 6'3", 196lbs | 2nd ranked CB

The Raiders didn't draft a true corner last season and instead signed two in free agency (Michael Davis and Jeff Okudah) and then drafted a nickel/safety hybrid in Decorian Patterson late in the draft.

The team desperately needs a true number one corner and Michigan's Will Johnson is exactly that with his blend of length, speed and borderline elite coverage skills. A strong Combine showing could spring Johnson into the top five along with top corner prospect Travis Hunter but if Johnson slides outside of the top five, the Raiders should count their lucky stars and select Johnson, potentially even with their first pick.

‣ Round 2, Pick 39
Image S Sonny Styles | 6'4", 228lbs | 1st ranked SS

The dream scenario would be Malaki Starks, the top overall safety in the draft, sliding into the beginning of the second round but if that doesn't happen -- which is likely the case -- the Raiders get a dynamic, physical safety in Styles who fits the mold of a modern NFL defender.

At six-foot-four and 228 pounds, Styles has a rare mixture of athleticism and size. He likely runs in the 4.5-second range in the 40-yard dash, which could have him potentially sniffing the first round. The Ohio native plays with an old-school style, roaming the defensive backfield with rare physicality that would be a fun and needed addition to the Raiders secondary.

‣ Round 3, Pick 71
Image WR Dane Key | 6'3", 196lbs | 9th ranked WR

The haul for Davante Adams was an impressive one but they still need to try to replace his production and find a true number one receiver.

While expecting Key to be that type of receiver as a rookie would be unfair, he does have the traits to potentially be one down the line. A former highly sought after recruit, Key has really good ball skills and hand-eye coordinator which allows him to the track to ball really well and make contested catches regularly. At six-foot-three, he's a smooth runner with very little wasted movement when changing directions.

‣ Round 3, Pick 73 (via NO)
Image CB Jaheim Singletary | 6'2", 187lbs | 11th ranked CB

You can't have enough good corners so why not throw another dart at the position?

The former Georgia Bulldog transferred to Arkansas where he is having a breakout season for the Razorbacks and could continue to climb up mock drafts. Singletary is a tall, lean ball-hawking cornerback who uses his 6-foot-2.5 stature, 33-inch arms and bouncy athleticism to make plays on the ball at a high rate. He looks like a wide receiver playing corner when the ball is in the air with his ability to extend and high-point.

‣ Round 3, Pick 93 (via BAL)
Image LB C.J. Hicks | 6'3", 236lbs | 5th ranked ILB

Ohio State treated the Raiders well in the last draft with both Miyan Williams and Tyleik Williams turning into productive rookies so why not double once more with Styles and Hicks?

A former top 30 recruit, Hicks has the makings of a future leader of the defense and has a wide array of skills that should allow him to succeed no matter which direction the defense decides to go scheme-wise. Hicks is already wise beyond his years and has a propensity to be in the right place at the right time. Mix that awareness with his top-notch athleticism and we have a potential monster. Hicks is working on improving his overall technique and hand usage to become a more well-rounded block shedder. He could also improve his ability to lower the boom

Raiders place receivers Mario Williams, Bo Melton on injured reserve as their seasons come to an end
The Las Vegas Raiders receivers Mario Williams and Bo Melton are heading to injured reserve, effectively ending their season.

The Raiders elevated receiver Moose Muhammad from their practice squad and free agent receivers Tyquan Thornton and N'Keal Harry. Running back Zonovan Knight was demoted from the active roster to the practice squad.

Williams tore his labrum in the Raiders last game while Melton suffered a dislocated elbow against the New Orleans Saints, a painful end to what has been a disappointing season for Melton. The former Scarlet Knight showed flashes last season and made the most of Tory Horton's injuries in the preseason to not only make the roster but fill in for Davante Adams in the starting lineup when Adams was traded to the Cowboys.

Since then, however, Melton has just four catches on the season after having nineteen last year in eight games. For Williams, his injury-filled rookie season put a damper on what could have been an exciting campaign with the USC product averaging 34.6 yards per game in the games that he played in.

Brian Flores, Frank Smith emerging as top candidates for Raiders head coaching opening
According to FOX's Jay Glazer, the Raiders front office have already began compiling a shortlist of candidates to interview after the season and at the top of the list is Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores and Miami Dolphins offensive coordinator Frank Smith.

The Raiders are also expected to give interim head coach Antonio Pierce 'a legitimate shot' after the season for the chance to stay on as the team's head coach as owner Mark Davis thinks highly of Pierce.

Flores was a defensive assistant in New England for over a decade before being hired by the Dolphins to be their head coach in 2019. Although unable to reach the playoffs, Flores helped lead Miami to consecutive winning seasons between 2020 and 2021, the franchise's first since 2003. However, conflict with Dolphins management led to him being fired after the 2021 season. Flores later filed a class-action lawsuit against the NFL, alleging racial discrimination in the league's treatment of minority coaches and executives. Amid the lawsuit, he returned to assistant coaching and became the defensive coordinator of the Vikings in 2023.

Smith spent time with the Raiders on Jon Gruden's staff as a tight end coach before being a run game coordinator for the Chargers in 2021 prior to joining Mike McDaniel's staff in Miami the next year.

Raiders extend Jeff Okudah following first start of the season
The Raiders and cornerback Jeff Okudah have agreed to a four-year, $24 million extension to keep former Buckeye in Las Vegas past this season.

Okudah signed a one-year, 'prove it' deal with the Raiders this past offseason and after rotating at nickel with last year's starter Jakorian Bennett, Okudah played outside corner this past week in place of the benched Nate Hobbs and had a wonderful performance while matched up with Chris Olave and Michael Thomas throughout the game.

Okudah is set to make $5.49 million next season, escalating to $6.56 million in the last year of his deal with $14.5 million of the $24 million being guaranteed.
