| Bucs Release Preseason Depth Chart; Position Battles to Watch

As required by the NFL prior to the team’s first preseason game, the Buccaneers have released a depth chart containing all of the players on the camp roster, though some key positions are still undecided

Baker Mayfield is expected to win the preseason starting quarterback battle over Kyle Trask.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will play their first preseason game of 2023 on Friday night against the Pittsburgh Steelers. There will be 22 players who get the distinction of starting the game.

That opening-day preseason lineup will in no way end the competition for several starting spots, nor will the team's first depth be a permanent document. Still, as the first depth chart of the year, it does provide some perspective.

Quarterbacks Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask, who are in a head-to-head competition for the assignment of following Tom Brady, are listed as co-starters. Logan Hall and Calijah Kancey, the team's latest top picks from the past two drafts, are on the list as starters surrounding Pro Bowl nose tackle Vita Vea. Rookie guard Cody Mauch is in the first spot at right guard.

FIRST DEPTH CHART

QB | Baker Mayfield / Kyle Trask
HB | Rachaad White
WR | Mike Evans
WR | Chris Godwin
WR | Russell Gage
TE | Cade Otton
LT | Tristan Wirfs
LG | Matt Feiler
C | Ryan Jensen
RG | Cody Mauch
RT | Luke Goedeke

DE | Calijah Kancey
DT | Vita Vea
DE | Logan Hall
EDGE | Joe Tryon-Shoyinka
ILB | Devin White
ILB | Lavonte David
EDGE | Shaquil Barrett
CB | Jamel Dean
CB | Carlton Davis III
S | Antoine Winfield Jr.
S | Ryan Neal

STARTING QB BATTLE

QB | Baker Mayfield ; QB | Kyle Trask
It’s a tough development for the former second-round pick out of the University of Florida, but for the Bucs this is probably the best-case scenario. Baker is likely the guy, for better or for worse, to start the season. No more worries or concerns about who plays better, there’s just the usual final roster spots that are up for grabs for a lot of late-round and undrafted guys.

WR DEPTH

WR | David Moore ; WR | Deven Thompkins ; WR | Kaylon Geiger ; WR | Trey Palmer
In the offseason, the Bucs lost Scotty Miller in free agency and they also did not re-sign Julio Jones. That leaves some open spots in the receiver room. Tampa Bay signed veteran David Moore who is familiar with offensive coordinator Dave Canales from their time together in Seattle so he could have a solid case to stick on the roster. They also have young players with some experience like Deven Thompkins and Kaylon Geiger, but someone to keep an eye on is 6th round draft pick Trey Palmer who has a great size to speed combination.

NICKELBACK

CB | Zyon McCollum ; DB | Dee Delaney ; DB | Josh Hayes
This offseason, Tampa Bay said goodbye to Sean Murphy-Bunting and with that, there is now a hole in the defense at the third cornerback spot. With Carlton Davis and Jamel Dean holding down the fort as the top two corners, the Bucs will need to find a solution to their third corner question.

Zyon McCollum is a name to watch here as he is entering his second season after being a 4th round pick in last year’s draft. Besides him, players like Dee Delaney, or 2023 6th round pick Josh Hayes figure to be in the competition for that corner spot but regardless of who it is, the Bucs will be gambling on a young player taking a step forward in 2023 at the cornerback position.

I like the layout that you've got here and its also an excellent team choice with the Bucs. Can't wait to see what direction you decide to go with.

This is definitely an interesting team to pay attention to...they're one good QB away from getting back into the playoff mix. Not a Baker fan but good luck :troll:

:yep: Although, the guy has posted 1,000 yards every year since joining the league. I'm a huge Evans fan.

Thanks, I appreciate that man. It's a fun team, and I do like the uniforms a lot. They're smooth. I think it's a franchise at a crossroads right now, which makes them really interesting. A lot of guys left or fell off with Brady's departure, but there are still a lot of talented pieces. Combine that with the fact that this division isn't exactly lighting it up. Hard to predict the future when the QB play is erratic.

I totally agree with you here. To be honest, I'm not a Baker fan either. And I don't think Trask is the answer. There's a window here that could allow this team to make a serious playoff push with the right QB (like you said). But how long will that window stay open? I'm not sure. I don't know if it can wait for a rookie to come in and learn the ropes. It might be over by then.

Spoiler alert, I am a Teddy Bridgewater fan! And I have always had this fascination with Jameis Winston for some reason. I think he's just a really interesting "character". Not to say that I'm definitely going to go after one of these guys, but if they hit the market and things fall into place, I wouldn't mind giving them a chance to be added to the roster.

| Mayfield Looks Sharp in Preseason Loss to Steelers, 27-17

The Buccaneers fell to the Steelers, 27-17, in the 2023 preseason opener

Baker Mayfield outperformed Kyle Trask in this one, completing eight passes for 63 yards and a touchdown.

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fell to the Pittsburgh Steelers, 27-17, in preseason Week One. Self-inflicted wounds solidified the outcome of the Bucs' preseason opener. Tampa Bay was penalized three times for 20 yards in the first two drives, putting the club behind the chains.

However, early in the second quarter, the Bucs struck. Baker Mayfield hit rookie Trey Palmer in the back corner of the end zone for an eight-yard touchdown.

Through the first three series, Mayfield went eight-of-nine for 41 yards and a touchdown before calling it a day.

“He was composed, did a good job of commanding the offense,” Bowles said of the No. 1 overall pick from the 2018 draft. “He made the plays he needed to make.”

Kyle Trask took over in the second quarter but was not able to find the end zone. He was intercepted by Steelers' Trenton Thompson and concluded his night by completing six-of-10 passes for 99 yards.

The Buccaneers went scoreless in the third quarter, while Pittsburgh put up 10, courtesy of a 67-yard touchdown bomb from Mason Rudolph to Calvin Austin and a B.T. Potter 43-yard field goal.

The Bucs had a last-ditch touchdown just under the two-minute warning as John Wolford hit Payne Durham for a four-yard touchdown. However, it wasn't enough as there were just too many miscues early on that sealed the Bucs' fate in preseason Week One.

RAPID REACTIONS

  • Without Mike Evans, Chris Godwin, and starting running back Rachaad White, Baker Mayfield and Kyle Trask worked with the same supporting cast on offense, providing a thorough evaluation process. Mayfield outperformed Trask.
  • Linebacker Cam Gill raised his stock this week. He tallied one sack and split another one. In his first action since suffering a season-ending Lisfranc injury in the 2022 preseason opener, he played really well. Gill is competing with third-round pick Yaya Diaby and sixth-round pick Jose Ramirez for backup duty.
  • Wide receiver depth looks like a tight battle! Rookie Trey Palmer, second-year wideouts Deven Thompkins and Kaylon Geiger, and veteran addition David Moore received extensive playing time during the first half. Palmer's speed was on full display during his touchdown catch. He continues to make a solid case for one of the remaining receiver spots on the depth chart behind Mike Evans, Chris Godwin and Russell Gage Jr., along with second-year pro, Thompkins.

Thompkins finished the 2022 season as the club's primary return specialist and got the starting gig on punts/kickoffs on Friday night. He has impressed throughout camp, making sensational acrobatic catches with his small, 5-foot-8 frame.
  • Many players were thrown into the mix during the offseason for the Bucs' impending slot corner battle. The role of a nickel corner in the NFL is a complex one, personifying the phrase "Swiss Army Knife." However, one name in particular is starting to gain traction, and that standout is undrafted free agent Christian Izien out of Rutgers.
