// Week 4 Preview: New York Giants
// BY JEANIE ROTH
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ - Standing in between the Seattle Seahawks and a bye week are the New York Giants, a team seeking its third win of the season.
Unlike the Carolina Panthers, a team the Seahawks defeated last week, the G-Men offer the exact opposite team profile - a below average offense (24th in yards per game) but one of the best defenses. In fact, the Giants are number one in points allowed per game, most recently holding the San Francisco 49ers to 10 points last Sunday.
The defense has been spearheaded by a powerful defensive line that features a front four of Azeez Ojulari - who recently brought home NFC Defensive Player of the Week honors, Leonard Williams, Dexter Lawrence, and Kayvon Thibodeaux. They face an offense that ranks 5th in points per game and 2nd in yards per game.
New York will likely need some more help from their offense as the season continues to progress - the Giants have scored the 4th fewest points among all NFL teams. They'll look to turn their fortunes around against a Seahawks defense that recently surrendered 30 points to the Panthers.
Things to Watch For
- Seahawks offensive line vs. Giants defensive line
The Giants have been tough in the trenches, whereas Seattle's offensive line continues to have their ups and downs. When it comes to running the football, Seattle's offensive line has done a great job opening up holes for Kenneth Walker III...however pass blocking has been somewhat of a concern through the first 3 weeks. The Seahawks have allowed Geno Smith to be sacked 9 times, which is 5th most in the NFL. How will they hold up against one of the league's best defenses - and possibly the best defensive line?
- The turnover battle
Building off of the first thing to watch for, the Seahawks will need to take better care of the ball versus the Giants than their 3 turnovers last week at home against the Panthers. Quarterback Geno Smith has emphasized the importance of taking care of the ball ever since last Sunday's post-game interview, and we've seen the veteran do just that during practice this week.
- Saquon Barkley vs. Seahawks defense
It's been a pretty slow start for last year's NFC rushing leader in yards, but Barkley will have an opportunity to capitalize against a Seahawks defense that has been vulnerable to giving up lots of yardage to running backs - in the first week, Cam Akers (Rams) ran for 92 yards and caught 4 passes for 74 yards. David Montgomery (Lions) also had 100 all-purpose yards. Last week, the Seahawks saw Miles Sanders (Panthers) gash them for 126 rushing yards. Barkley is the key to jump-starting the anemic New York offense, and the Seahawks know they'll need to limit his production for a chance at a 4th straight win.

// Seahawks defense struggles to contain Jones, Giants in 26-31 loss
EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ. - Third down conversions and field goals were the story of the game for the Seattle Seahawks as they dropped their first game of the season on Monday night against the New York Giants.
Seattle looked like they were on track for a 4-0 start after heading into halftime with a 20-10 lead over the Giants, however the 10-point lead disappeared in the second half after the Giants went on a 21-0 scoring run to take a 31-20 late in the 4th quarter. A final Seahawks drive that cut the lead to 5 proved to be their last points of the contest.
Pete Carroll and the Seahawks will look back at this game and highlight the missed opportunities at red zone touchdowns and failure to get the Giants offense off the field on 3rd down. Jason Myers settled for two field goals of less than 30 yards, which could have been the different between a 5-point loss versus a 4th win. The Seattle defense also allowed Daniel Jones and the Giants to convert on 12 of 17 third-down attempts, with the toughest one coming in the 4th quarter. Trailing 20-24, the Seahawks managed to force New York into a 3rd and 9 from their own 18-yard line, but Jones managed to find Parris Campbell on a corner pattern that beat rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon for a 39-yard gain. The Giants would ultimately go on to score a touchdown, with Jones connecting with tight end Darren Waller to extend the lead to 11.
Seattle allowed Jones to throw for season-highs of 32 completions, 328 yards, and 4 touchdowns. They also allowed running back Saquon Barkley to rush for 101 yards. Nothing seemed to go right on the defensive side of the ball in the second half.
In the loss, the Seahawks were able to protect the football as opposed to last week's 3-turnover performance. Geno Smith threw for 287 yards and 2 touchdowns (both to D.K. Metcalf) while not turning the ball over once. He was, however, sacked 4 times by the Giants. Kenneth Walker III was slowed to just 64 rushing yards after an impressive 3-game stretch to open the season, but it was rookie running back Zach Charbonnet that managed to find the end zone for the first time in his career. He finished with 45 yards on 6 carries.
It marks the second consecutive game in which the Seahawks have allowed their opponents to score at least 30 points, a facet of their game they'll look to revisit and clean up as they head into their bye week.
