// 2023 NFL Season Kicks Off with Several Surprises

Top Stories
  • Rookie QBs victorious in NFL debuts
    Bryce Young, the league's number 1 pick in this year's draft, and Anthony Richardson, the 4th overall pick, led their respective teams to divisional wins in their regular season debut. Young completed 75 percent of his passes for 198 yards and 2 touchdowns on the road to help the Carolina Panthers defeat the Atlanta Falcons. Richardson threw for 168 yards and a touchdown for the Colts, but his impact was felt even further with his legs. The Florida product rushed for 31 yards and scored an additional 2 touchdowns as the Indianapolis Colts took down AFC South rival Jacksonville. Things didn't go so well, however, for C.J. Stroud (2nd overall pick), who completed just 41 percent of his passes for 158 yards and an interception against a stout Baltimore Ravens defense.
  • Are Kenny Pickett and the Pittsburgh Steelers the real deal?
    Sure, it's only a 1-game sample, but putting up 35 points against what is considered to be one of the top NFL defenses is pretty impressive. The Steelers did just that against the San Francisco 49ers, led by Pickett's arm (273 yards and 3 touchdowns). Wide receiver Allen Robinson II registered 145 yards, his most since 2018, and second year wideout George Pickens added 71 yards. Pittsburgh also got 2 touchdowns from backup running back Jaylen Warren.
  • Justin Fields looks to take the next big leap at quarterback
    Fields finally showed signs of growth as a signal caller towards the end of last season and his production resumes to kick off 2023, accounting for all of Chicago's touchdowns in their 28-14 victory over the Green Bay Packers. The third year starter only threw the ball 12 times but was effective in doing so, completing 8 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown. It was his running ability that had jaws dropping again, as Fields toted the ball 16 times for 158 yards (the second most yards in a game for his career) and 3 touchdowns (a new career-high), earning him NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors. He'll look to carry that momentum into the Bears' next game against Tampa Bay.
  • Parsons, Cowboys pitch shutout of Giants on Sunday Night Football
    It was the only shutout of the week, and linebacker Micah Parsons is putting the league on notice as he begins his campaign for Defensive Player of the Year. He registered a career-high 4 sacks on Daniel Jones, who finished with a 44 percent completion percentage and 59.6 passer rating while being sacked 5 times.
  • Jets' postseason hopes take a big hit with Aaron Rodgers gone
    The 4-time NFL MVP's signing with the New York Jets this offseason instantly made them a playoff contender and one of the favorites to win the AFC. However Rodgers suffered a season-ending Achilles injury in his team's 17-22 loss to the Buffalo Bills on Sunday. That leaves head coach Robert Saleh with a key decision to make at quarterback...does he stick with 3rd year pro Zach Wilson, who posted 248 yards and 1 touchdown against the Bills? Or do the Jets look to another player to fill the huge void that Rodgers left?

// Adams, Witherspoon slated to return as Seahawks face Lions
// BY ELROY SOLIS

RENTON, Wash. - Fresh off a season-opening win against the Los Angeles Rams, the Seahawks are eager to bring back starters Jamal Adams and cornerback Devon Witherspoon as they prepare to face the Detroit Lions this Sunday at Ford Field.

Jamal Adams, who has been out since tearing his quadriceps tendon in the 2022 season opener, is expected to be listed in the defensive lineup at strong safety, a position that Julian Love handled against the Rams - and handled well, posting a team-high 9 tackles.

When asked if Adams was going to be seen on the playing field this Sunday, Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll answered: “Jamal is back.”

Adams has been with Seattle since 2020 but has struggled with injury issues that have prevented him from ever playing a full season in a Seahawks uniform. A groin injury forced Adams to miss 5 games in 2020. He suffered a torn labrum in a Week 13 win over the San Francisco 49ers in 2021 that kept him out for the remainder of the year. Last season, Adams tore his quadriceps tendon in Seattle's season opener and has been out since.

When healthy, however, Adams is regarded as one of the best strong safeties in the NFL. He set an NFL record with 9.5 sacks in 2020, the most sacks by a defensive back in one season. His ability to play inside the box can help Seattle further improve their run defense, and when paired with fellow safety Quandre Diggs, the duo can rank atop of the NFL when playing their best.

Rookie cornerback Devon Witherspoon will also make his much-anticipated debut against Detroit after sitting out last week with a hamstring injury. It's unclear as to how much playing time he'll see - the responsibilities of the second cornerback position last week were split between Michael Jackson (6 tackles), Coby Bryant (4 tackles), and Tre Brown (4 tackles).

// Week 2 Preview: Detroit Lions
// BY JEANIE ROTH

DETROIT, Mich. - "One game says a lot but it can also say very little," Pete Carroll told reporters this week.

Carroll was addressing a question about his team's victory last week against the Los Angeles Rams and momentum his team is carrying into this week's matchup against the Detroit Lions. For the long time Seattle head coach, he knows that jumping to conclusions after one game is dangerous.

"They [Detroit] had a tough game against the defending Super Bowl champs. But we've seen the game film from last year and we know Dan [Campbell] is turning that team around. They hustle, they're aggressive, and they're hungry. I'm sure they're going to be very hungry for a win in front of their home crowd on Sunday. We have to do whatever we can to drown out the noise and play our best."

Indeed, the Lions are coming off a 12-24 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last Thursday night in the NFL's first game of the 2023 regular season. Seattle is aiming to win back-to-back games to open a season for the first time since 2020.

Things to Watch For
  • The Jamal Adams effect
    The Seahawks gave up over 5 yards per carry to Cam Akers last week, a number they're hoping to improve upon against Detroit, whose rushing attack led by David Montgomery and rookie Jahmyr Gibbs. Adams returns to the starting lineup this week for the first time since the beginning of the 2022 season, and the Seahawks are hoping his impact is felt in on every play. "It's the energy he brings that hypes us up," said safety Quandre Diggs. "The guys are going to be pumped for sure."
  • Will Seattle's defensive depth be on showcase again this Sunday?
    The Seahawks received big contributions from offseason acquisitions Devin Bush (1 sack and an interception) and Julian Love (9 tackles) last week, and it will be interesting to see how they factor into this Sunday's matchup. Bush was formidable in pass coverage and against the run, looking like the twitchy explosive linebacker that he was when he came out in 2019 and was selected 10th overall by the Steelers. Love was all over the field against the Rams, and Carroll said that he'll continue to see plenty of playing time even with Adams returning.
  • Jared Goff vs. the Seahawks secondary
    If there's anyone on Detroit hoping to bounce back big, it's going to be Goff, who only recorded 134 passing yards against the Chiefs. The quarterback definitely has the weapons on offense to play much better - Montgomery, Gibbs, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and rookie Sam LaPorta are just some examples - although he faces a Seattle secondary that is returning Adams as well as Devon Witherspoon. Seattle limited Matthew Stafford to 245 yards last week and sacked him 3 times.

Artie Burns' interception in the 4th quarter sealed the game for the Seahawks.

// Walker III, Seahawks Dominant in 31-10 Win over Lions
DETROIT, Mich. - The Seattle Seahawks took care of business away from Lumen Field for the first time this season, capturing a 31-10 win over the Detroit Lions to advance to 2-0 on the regular season.

Despite a slow start to the game, Kenneth Walker III added another 2 rushing touchdowns to double his season total to 4, Jaxon Smith-Njigba recorded his first NFL touchdown, and continued impressive play from Seattle's defense highlighted the day. The win marks the first time that the Seahawks have started 2-0 since the 2020 season.

Following a solid game against the Rams, Seattle featured more of linebacker Devin Bush in their nickel defense, and he responded with another good performance - 12 tackles and a forced fumble that was recovered by Bobby Wagner. While the Seahawks were unable to translate the recovery into any points, it is the second turnover that Bush has forced this season, and his teammates are taking notice of his contributions.

"Everyone could see that Zero - Bush's jersey number - came into training camp and practices with a different mindset," Wagner said of Bush. "We know there was a lot of pressure put on him, being a first-round pick and all that. But at the end of the day, we're all rooting for each other. The players and coaches have definitely been rooting for him." Bush also finished with a team-leading 12 tackles, partly due to Seattle staying in their nickel defense to counter Detroit's pass-heavy offensive gameplan.

Lions quarterback Jared Goff played better than he did against the Chiefs, racking up 334 yards. His touchdown to Kalif Raymond in the second quarter was the first score for either team. However the Lions were limited to 3 points after their second quarter touchdown and were held scoreless by the Seahawks in the second half. An opportunity to cut the lead to one possession in the 4th quarter was squandered, when Goff threw a red zone interception to Artie Burns. The Seahawks capitalized on the turnover with a 4 minute drive that ended with Smith-Njigba's 3-yard touchdown from Geno Smith, who also found Tyler Lockett in the end zone for the first time.

Jamal Adams recorded 8 tackles and a sack in his first game since the 2022 season opener and was key in helping the Seahawks limit Detroit to 52 rushing yards. After the game, the safety told reporters that his best was yet to come.

"I'm just getting started," he dramatically responded. "We're just getting started," referring to the Seahawks.

Seattle travels home to host the Carolina Panthers and rookie sensation Bryce Young next week.

// AROUND THE NFL - WEEK 2 \\

Image

// Week 2: It's still early, but have the Broncos figured it out?
  • The Super Bowl looks like it still runs through Kansas City
    What Super Bowl hangover? The defending champions are off to a dominating 2-0 start and are being eyed as one of the favorites to win the Lombardi Trophy yet again, led by franchise quarterback Patrick Mahomes who threw for 297 yards and accounted for 5 touchdowns this week against Jacksonville. Andy Reid has gotten receiver Kadarius Toney heavily involved in the first two games...he leads the Chiefs in receptions (17), yards (208), and is tied for the team lead in touchdowns (3). Travis Kelce returned to action this week and hauled in 3 touchdowns. Kansas City currently ranks first in total offense and second in total defense, and there's no reason to suggest they are going to slow down with the way they are playing.
  • Sean Payton has the Broncos 2-0...can they keep it up?
    A new head coach has injected some new life into Russell Wilson and Denver's anemic offense from a season ago. In their most recent shutout victory of the Commanders, the Broncos scored 35 points as Wilson recorded 304 yards and 3 touchdowns. The team is also getting it done on the ground behind the duo of Javonte Williams (72 yards, touchdown) and Samaje Perine (40 yards). If the Broncos can continue to play well on offense to go along with their currently-ranked number one defense, things can be turning around in the Mile High City. Broncos Country, is it time to ride?
  • Anthony Richardson and Bryce Young impress yet again
    It's safe to say Richardson and Young have both exceeded expectations given the offenses they've inherited. Playing without Jonathan Taylor for another game as he remains injured an in a contract stalemate, Richardson threw for a touchdown and added another one on the ground in Indianapolis' 35-13 win over the Houston Texans. That gives the Florida product 5 total touchdowns for the season. Young followed up a 2-touchdown performance against the Atlanta Falcons with a 4-touchdown performance against the New Orleans Saints on Monday night. It's safe to say that the future looks bright in Indianapolis (2-0) and Charlotte (2-0).
