// Love and Young to miss game against Panthers
// BY CLEMENTE HOPKINS

RENTON, Wash. - Seattle has ruled out safety Julian Love and defensive tackle Cameron Young for this Sunday's afternoon game against the Carolina Panthers, head coach Pete Carroll told reporters following a Seahawks practice session.

Both Love and Young suffered hamstring injuries in practice earlier in the week and were seen working with trainers on the sidelines for most of the sessions leading up to this Sunday. Carroll says he expects both players to be back the following week for Seattle's week 4 contest against the New York Giants. They'll get some additional time to recover as the Seahawks do not play the Giants until Monday night.

Love has excelled in his defensive role so far, recording 17 tackles while assisting in coverage on nickel and dime packages. He was a key factor in Seattle's season-opening win against the Los Angeles Rams when the team played without Jamal Adams, registering 9 tackles.

Young, a 4th round selection in this year's draft, has recorded 1 tackle as the team's starting defensive tackle.

// Week 3 Preview: Carolina Panthers
// BY JEANIE ROTH

SEATTLE, Wash. - Two high-powered offenses are prepared to face off on Sunday when the Seahawks meet the Carolina Panthers at Lumen Field.

Carolina has been one of the early surprises in the 2023 season. Under new head coach Frank Reich and first overall pick Bryce Young, the Panthers currently have the league's 5th highest scoring offense. They also ranked 3rd in offensive yards per game.

Much of the Panthers' success so far this season has to do with keeping their rookie quarterback upright. The Panthers offensive line, despite losing starting guard Austin Corbett for the season, have surrendered just 2 sacks this season, allowing the rookie time to process his reads and get the ball to his receivers. Ball security has also been important young, who's thrown only 2 interceptions versus 6 touchdowns. He's also spread the ball efficiently to newcomers Adam Thielen (126 yards, 3 TD) and D.J. Chark Jr. (77 yards, TD), Hayden Hurst (60 yards), and rookie Jonathan Mingo (91 yards, TD).

Likewise, the Seahawks also rank in the top 10 in points per game (8th) and offensive yards per game (6th). Both teams are looking to avoid their first loss of the regular season.

Things to Watch For
  • Panthers offensive line vs. Seahawks pass rush
    As mentioned, one of the reasons for Carolina's 2-0 start has to do with their offensive line being able to keep a clean pocket for Young, who can shred defenses when given time as the nation has seen when he was at Alabama. The Seahawks have sacked opposing quarterbacks 6 times this season and will look to generate pressure on the rookie and force him into making mistakes.
  • Kenneth Walker III and Seattle's rushing game
    Walker's sophomore season has gotten off to a great start with 4 rushing touchdowns in his team's first two games. Seattle's rushing attack may be an important factor if the Seahawks were to win this game...with two top 10 offenses clashing, Pete Carroll may want to keep the time of possession in his favor and not allow the Panthers many opportunities to score. Carolina's defense has been formidable against the run, allowing 94 yards per game.

Linebacker Uchenna Nwosu's 3rd sack came at an opportune time to help the Seahawks force a 4th-down interception and defeat the Panthers.

// Red zone stand helps Seahawks edge Panthers
SEATTLE, Wash. - Despite losing the turnover battle, the Seahawks stepped up in the most important moments to narrowly defeat the Carolina Panthers.

The Panthers marched down the field late in the 4th quarter, but with under 40 seconds left rookie quarterback Bryce Young took a sack from Seahawks linebacker Uchenna Nwosu on a 3rd-and-goal, forcing Carolina into a 4th-down situation at the 18-yard line. Young's final throw of the game was desperately launched into double coverage for D.J. Chark Jr., where it was intercepted by Tariq Woolen to help the Seahawks maintain and secure a 34-30 win.

Geno Smith got his team into the victory formation for the 3rd time this season, and while Seattle kept their winning streak alive, Smith acknowledged that his mistakes nearly cost the Seahawks a win. Although Smith accounted for 4 touchdowns (3 passing and 1 rushing), he was also responsible for 3 interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown by Panthers safety Xavier Woods.

"I'm very thankful for our defense today because I didn't play to the best of my abilities," Smith told reporters. "It's going to be something that I'll have to clean up moving forward." Smith had not committed a turnover in the Seahawks' first two games.

It was a scoring show as many expected between two of the league's top offenses. The game started with Seattle taking their first possession of the game down the field for Noah Fant and Smith's first touchdown connection of the season. The Panthers responded with 3 straight scores - a field goal from Eddy Piniero, Woods' interception return, and a passing touchdown between Young and tight end Tommy Tremble. Trailing 7-17, the Seahawks answered with two touchdown drives before the half ended - a 19-yard hookup between Smith and Kenneth Walker III and a 7-yard connection between Smith and Tyler Lockett. The Seahawks took a late led in the game after Smith scored his 4th touchdown on a 5-yard run and dive into the endzone.

The Seahawks and Panthers combined for 64 points and 843 yards of offense. Both Walker III and Panthers running back Miles Sanders gained over 120 rushing yards, and D.K. Metcalf led all receivers with 76 yards on just 3 receptions. For Walker III, it is his third consecutive game with at least 2 touchdowns and second consecutive with at least 100 rushing yards.

Defensively, Seattle recorded a season-high 6 sacks, with 3 coming from Nwosu. Jordyn Brooks and Darrell Taylor added 2 sacks and 1 sack, respectively. Woolen was responsible for the Seahawks' only forced turnover. Woods, second-year player Jaycee Horn, and rookie Jammie Robinson had interceptions for Carolina.

The Seahawks' next contest comes against the New York Giants on Monday night.

// AROUND THE NFL - WEEK 3 \\

Image

// Justin Fields' blazing season on the ground continues
In what is one of the bigger upsets of the week, Chicago limited the Kansas City Chiefs offense to just 293 yards, and that may be partly due to the fact that Patrick Mahomes left the game early in the second quarter and never returned. The win was highlighted by Justin Fields' ability to create with his legs once again, as he rushed for 140 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries while adding a passing touchdown to Darnell Mooney. Fields has started the season red-hot on the ground, and just check out these statistics for him: through three games, the quarterback leads the NFL in rushing yards (345), yards per carry (8.6), and is tied for the league lead in rushing touchdowns (5). The Bears intercepted backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert twice - once by linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, and once by T.J. Edwards.

Here were other things to note for Week 3:
  • The Browns just can't get things going
    A third consecutive loss to open the season may have the Browns' front office questioning whether this team has any future. When Cleveland traded for the embattled Deshaun Watson last season, they were met with disapproval from most of the league, and he hasn't been the same quarterback as we've seen him when he played for the Houston Texans. Watson is completed just 57 percent of his passes in 2023, and all-Pro running back Nick Chubb has struggled to find any rhythm on the ground. He's averaging 59 rushing yards per game and still has not scored a rushing touchdown. No offense to the Browns, but when Donovan Peoples-Jones is your leading receiver (16 receptions, 203 yards, 1 touchdown) and Amari Cooper has been held to 2 receptions and 42 yards in three games, that's not a good sign.
  • Patriots use 2nd half to come back and defeat Jets
    Life for the Jets have been tough without Aaron Rodgers. The Jets are now losers of 3 straight after blowing a 21-7 1st half lead against their division rivals, who put up 592 yards of total offense to win 24-21. Don't blame Zach Wilson for this week's loss...he threw for 247 yards and 2 touchdowns without turning the ball over. They just couldn't stop former Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott, who rushed for a season-high 145 yards and a touchdown. JuJu Smith-Schuster also caught 9 passes from Mac Jones for 172 yards and a touchdown. New York, along with the Lions, Cardinals, Browns, Rams, and Texans are the remaining teams without a win this season.
