// As 2023 Season Begins, Don't Underestimate the Importance of Seahawks' Rookies
// BY ADAM MILLER

RENTON, Wash. - The Seattle Seahawks walked away from April's NFL draft with 10 new players, their most since 2019. For most teams, having that many draft picks can be an indication that they are in a rebuilding mode, but not for Pete Carroll and the Seahawks. Expect at least a handful of these rookies to have a significant impact in the upcoming season.

Here is a list of rookies drafted by the Seahawks back in April:
  • Devon Witherspoon, CB, Illinois | Round 1, Pick 5
  • Jaxon Smith-Njigba, WR, Ohio State | Round 1, Pick 20
  • Derick Hall, EDGE, Auburn | Round 2, Pick 37
  • Zach Charbonnet, RB, UCLA | Round 2, Pick 52
  • Anthony Bradford, OL, LSU | Round 4, Pick 108
  • Cameron Young, DL, Mississippi State | Round 4, Pick 123
  • Mike Morris, EDGE, Michigan | Round 5, Pick 151
  • Olusegun Oluwatimi, C, Michigan | Round 5, Pick 154
  • Jerrick Reed II, S, New Mexico | Round 6, Pick 198
  • Kenny McIntosh, RB, Georgia | Round 7, Pick 237

Seattle's first rounders - Witherspoon and Smith-Njigba - are slated to see plenty of snaps. Playing opposite Tariq Woolen is an unbelievable scenario for Witherspoon, who will likely have immediate opportunities to display his talents, just as Woolen did. The 22-year old put up stellar numbers in his final season at Illinois, earning the highest coverage grade in the nation (92.5), according to PFF while finishing as a finalist for the Thorpe Award. Witherspoon still expects to make adjustments as he transitions from Illinois - which played man coverage on 66% of its snaps last year - to Seattle, which plays a more zone coverage-heavy scheme. He sat out the preseason with a hamstring injury and is eyeing a Week 2 return against the Detroit Lions after being ruled out this week.

Smith-Njigba made headlines as a sophomore at Ohio State when he set both a school single game and FBS Bowl record for receiving yards with 347 in his team's win in the 2022 Rose Bowl. Despite missing most of his junior season, the receiver still ranked as one of the best in the 2023 class with his route-running abilities and elusiveness. He should immediately be the third option in the offense, behind D.K. Metcalf and Tyler Lockett.

Derick Hall adds to what is already a deep edge-rushing room with Uchenna Nwosu, Darrell Taylor, and last year's second round pick Boye Mafe. Explosive and long, Hall plays with a rugged demeanor and puts his traits to work as an assertive power rusher capable of putting offensive tackles in reverse. Hall's upside flashed during his preseason debut against the Vikings, where early on, he proved to be a difficult task for offensive linemen to block.

"He's got one of the really, really good attitudes about playing defense. You love his heart, what he wants to do, how he wants to play. He's really one of the fellas," Carroll said about Hall.

Zach Charbonnet offers a physicality that will help complement Kenneth Walker III's running style. For a bigger back, Charbonnet has a knack for making defenders miss as he is a patient runner who understands how to set up defenders with calculated and decisive cuts while not losing any of his acceleration. And now with a pair of running backs as potential weapons, it opens up opportunities for the Seahawks to dictate the running game against their opponents. Seventh-rounder Kenny McIntosh also joins the backfield.

Don't be surprised to see Cameron Young on the field a lot as well. The defensive tackle was listed at the top of Seattle's depth chart this week, meaning he'll likely get the first snaps on Sunday. Mike Morris also adds much-needed depth to the defensive line. Anthony Bradford and Olu Oluwatimi provides depth behind current starters Evan Brown and Phil Haynes, and an injury to either player opens up an opportunity to block for Geno Smith.

Jerrick Reed II will provide depth throughout the secondary, potentially competing for reps in coverage in the slot. He also has extensive special teams experience.

The infusion of young talent has Carroll and the Seahawks excited about their future, especially after the team struck gold with last year's draft. Defying all outside expectations, the Seattle Seahawks managed to post a winning record and make the playoffs in their first season without Russell Wilson and Bobby Wagner in large part due to the immense contributions of their heralded 2022 draft class, which included Walker III, tackles Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas, and Woolen. Throwing five first-year players into the starting lineup from day one, Seattle's rookie class logged nearly 4,900 total snaps, second behind only Houston. Rookies were especially critical to the team's success on the offensive side of the ball, as per NFL Next Gen Stats, they received the highest percentage of offensive snaps (22.9) from first-year players in the NFL.

In addition to the draft, Seattle brought back fan favorite Wagner during the offseason along with safety Julian Love, linebacker Devin Bush, and others to strengthen a defense that ranked near the bottom of the league in 2022.

The Seahawks and Los Angeles Rams will kickoff from Lumen Field in Week 1 on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1:25 p.m. PT.

// Week 1 Preview: Los Angeles Rams
// BY JEANIE ROTH

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Seattle Seahawks face the Los Angeles Rams at Lumen Field as part of Week 1 of the 2023 season, with both teams aiming to establish an early lead atop the NFC West.

The matchup presents an opportunity for Pete Carroll and the Seahawks to make a mark as a contender for the division against a Rams team coming off a 5-12 season following a Super Bowl victory in 2021. Matthew Stafford is back for the Rams but will be without his favorite target Cooper Kupp, who will miss several weeks with a hamstring injury. The Rams are loaded with young players, which will challenge head coach Sean McVay this year.

On the other hand, the Seahawks are coming off an impressive first season with Geno Smith as the team's starting quarterback. Seattle also features offensive talent that includes Kenneth Walker III, D.K. Metcalf, and Tyler Lockett.

The opener also marks Bobby Wagner's return to Seattle after one season with the Rams. The Seahawks brought back the future Hall of Fame linebacker as part of an overhaul to their front seven after finishing 30th in run defense last season and faces a Rams backfield headlined by Cam Akers, who registered career-highs in carries (188), yards (786) and touchdowns (9) in 2022. Seattle will be without defensive starters Jamal Adams and Devon Witherspoon.

Meanwhile, the Rams lost key defensive players during the offseason, including linebacker Leonard Floyd, starting safety Taylor Rapp, and defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Future Hall of Famer Aaron Donald returns after contemplating retirement, but is surrounded by a plethora of inexperience.

Even with glaring weaknesses, the Rams still have who is considered one of the best signal callers in the NFL in McVay. And in a divisional game, expect anything and everything to happen.

Things to Watch For
  • Cam Akers vs. Seattle's front seven
Seattle finished last season with one of the worst run defenses in the NFL...if this game stays close, it may be in part due to Akers' ability to help the Rams dictate the pace of the game. In the final game of 2022 against the Seahawks, Akers went over 100 yards and averaged 5 yards per carry.
  • Aaron Donald vs. Seattle's offensive line
Make no mistake - Donald's a matchup nightmare for every single offensive lineman in the NFL, especially the Seahawks. In 17 career games against Seattle, Donald has recorded 15 sacks...and if he's not getting to the quarterback, he'll find other ways to disturb a team's offensive rhythm, such as helping create opportunities for his teammates.
  • D.K. Metcalf/Tyler Lockett/Jaxon Smith-Njigba vs. the Rams secondary
There is no more Jalen Ramsey to deal with for this group of Seahawks receivers, and capitalizing against LA's secondary will be key. Metcalf, Seattle's number 1 receiver, likely sees a combination of Akhello Witherspoon and Duke Shelley while garnering additional attention from safeties John Johnson III and Jordan Fuller. That leaves Lockett and rookie Smith-Njigba with chances to make big plays against the inexperienced Rams.

Loving the Seahawks draft class but idk if I'll ever get any time to throw the ball to the receivers because this offensive line is kind of trash lol

D.K. Metcalf led all players with 101 receiving yards while adding 7 catches and a touchdown.

// Seahawks Triumphant in Season Opener against Rams
SEATTLE, Wash. - Kenneth Walker III scored two touchdowns, D.K. Metcalf went over 100 yards receiving, and the Seattle Seahawks fended off the Los Angeles Rams to win their first game of the 2023 regular season.

It was by no means an easy victory for the Seahawks, and there seems to rarely be such a thing as an "easy win" against NFC West opponents. Seattle's offense was held scoreless until the 11-minute mark of the second quarter when Geno Smith found Metcalf over the middle of the field for a 17-yard touchdown. The Seahawks capitalized minutes later after Matthew Stafford was intercepted by linebacker and offseason acquisition Devin Bush, who undercut Cam Akers' wheel route out of the Rams backfield to give some much needed momentum to Seattle. The drive was capped off with a 14-yard rushing score from Walker III, who scored later in the game to extend the Seahawks' lead to 21-13 in the 4th quarter.

Stafford played without star receiver Cooper Kupp and still managed to complete 70 percent (26 of 37) of his passes for 245 yards and 2 touchdowns. Van Jefferson led the Rams with 7 receptions, though it was Akers who was the offensive star. He rushed the ball 16 times for 92 yards and caught 4 passes for 74 yards.

The Rams drove down the field in just over two minutes after Jason Myer's 40-yard field goal late in the 4th quarter to cut the lead to 3 after Stafford connected with tight end Brycen Hopkins for a touchdown and Ben Skowronek on a 2-point conversion, but the team was unable to get the ball back for a chance to tie the game.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll gave credit to the Rams, a team many discredited going into the matchup due to their inexperience. "Sean [McVay] always gets his guys ready for any type of game, and I'm not surprised by that. The last thing we wanted to do was underestimate them."

Despite key losses on the defensive side of the ball in the offseason, the Rams still managed to sack Geno Smith 5 times, led by second-year player Bobby Brown III's 2.5 sacks. Aaron Donald recorded 5 tackles, while Jordan Fuller's 13 tackles led all players.

Facing heavy pressure behind a young group of offensive lineman, Smith stayed calm and responded with 282 yards and a touchdown. Walker III finished the game with 70 rushing yards on 19 carries in addition to 54 receiving yards on 6 catches, and second-round rookie Zach Charbonnet added 20 yards on 6 carries. First round pick Jaxon Smith-Njigba caught 4 passes for 70 yards. The Seattle defense played without Jamal Adams and Devon Witherspoon and allowed 321 yards of offense to the Rams. Filling in for Adams, safety Julian Love, another offseason acquisition, led the Seahawks with 9 tackles. Defensive lineman Jarran Reed, who returned to Seattle this year following stints with the Green Bay Packers and Kansas City Chiefs, added 2 sacks. Bobby Wagner's first regular season game in a Seattle uniform since 2021, recorded 6 tackles.

The Seahawks travel to Detroit next week to face the Lions, a team they defeated last season in a thrilling 48-45 shootout.
