// AROUND THE NFL - WEEK 4 \\

Image

// Maybe it's time to acknowledge the Colts...
First year head coach Shane Steichen has the Indianapolis Colts off to a 3-1 start after a 34-17 win over the Rams on Sunday, and the Colts have been able to achieve success without star running back Jonathan Taylor. Zack Moss ran for 3 touchdowns in the most recent game and has 6 for the season (best in the NFL) while the Colts' defense ranks in the top 10 in yards and points allowed. After being written off by many critics due to a new coaching regime, a young and inexperienced quarterback in Anthony Richardson, and the controversy surrounding Taylor, his knee injury, and his contract situation, the Colts find themselves atop the AFC South...although there are many games to be played. With the 4-game sample, however, it wouldn't be surprising to see the Colts continue to turn heads. Taylor has been reported to be back to 100 percent health, although it remains to be seen whether he will suit up for the Colts this season. If he does, the Colts may be even more dangerous.

Here were other things to note for Week 4:
  • The Washington Commanders don't seem to be in command of anything
Four games...two shutouts. And no, it's not the Commanders that are shutting out their opponents. Washington has been held scoreless in 2 games this season - Week 2 against the Broncos (0-35) and this week against NFC East rival Philadelphia (0-45). They scored just 7 points last week in the 40-point loss to the Buffalo Bills. To add insult to injury, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen has been ruled out for the next 7 weeks after MRIs revealed some damage to his ACL. This team looks nothing like the team we saw that defeated the Cardinals in the first week of the season, when sophomore quarterback Sam Howell tossed 4 touchdowns - he's thrown 1 touchdown to 5 interceptions since then, and not much can be said about their defense, which has allowed 3 straight games of at least 35 points.
  • Herbie Fully Loaded
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert continues to decimate defenses with his arm, leading Los Angeles to a 30-24 victory over the Las Vegas Raiders. Herbert took home NFC Offensive Player of the Week honors after completing 34 of 48 throws for 439 yards and 2 touchdowns. He leads all passers in yards (1,328), completions (105), completion percentage (74%), yards per attempt (9.4), and passer rating (124.0) while boasting a 10-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio. The Chargers are currently 3-1, and Herbert is a big reason for that.
  • Ravens, Eagles, and Cowboys remain as last undefeated teams
Games dropped by the Bills and Seahawks this week leave Baltimore, Philadelphia, and Dallas as the only teams without a loss. Getting past the Steelers on the road next week puts the Ravens in a good position to continue to win, as their next games would be against the Tennessee Titans, the Detroit Lions, and the Arizona Cardinals before hosting the Seattle Seahawks. The Eagles have road games against the Rams and Jets up next before hosting the Dolphins on Sunday night. The Cowboys may be facing the toughest road as they spend their 2 weeks in the state of California against the 49ers and Chargers before a bye week.

// Assessing Seattle's Performance Through First 4 Games of 2023 Season
// BY ADAM MILLER

RENTON, Wash. - The Seattle Seahawks are entering their bye week with a 3-1 record, and after 4 games played, there's much left to be desired according to head coach Pete Carroll.

The Seahawks are currently in 1st place in the NFC West, with the San Francisco 49ers (2-2) right behind them. The Los Angeles Rams and Arizona Cardinals both remain winless, making the division likely to come down to Seattle and San Francisco, the team that knocked the Seahawks out of the playoffs last year in the Wild Card round.

Here is a quick summary of Seattle's first 4 games:
  • Week 1: The Seahawks picked up their first divisional win of the season following a victory over the Rams.
  • Week 2: Seattle quickly dispatched the Detroit Lions, 31-10 behind Kenneth Walker III and Geno Smith. Safety Jamal Adams also returned for the first time.
  • Week 3: Walker III's 165 yards and 2 touchdowns paced the offense, while the Seahawks defense made a red zone stand to hold off the Panthers for a 34-30 win.
  • Week 4: Seattle's defense was unable to stop the Giants from scoring 31 points for their first loss of the season.

Statistically, the Seahawks have proven that their offense can do more than enough to win. The defense, however, can be improved upon, likely what Carroll was referring to when he expressed the need to play even better:
  • Team Rankings
    Points Per Game: 28.7 (5th)
Passing Yards Per Game: 255.2 (6th)
Rushing Yards Per Game: 147.5 (5th)
Points Allowed Per Game: 23.0 (19th)
Passing Yards Allowed Per Game: 269.7 (31st)
Rushing Yards Allowed Per Game: 103.2 (10th)

OFFENSE
Commanding the offense for a second straight season is Geno Smith, who currently ranks 3rd in the NFL in passing yards with 1,098. Last year's rookie rushing leader Kenneth Walker III has been the highlight of the offense...his 407 rushing yards ranks 2nd just behind San Francisco's Christian McCaffrey, and his 5 touchdowns on the ground are also tied for 2nd in the league. Walker III's 5.7 yards per carry also ranks him second overall, behind McCaffrey once again. He's also proven to be a weapon out of the backfield as a receiver this season, ranking 4th on the team in catches (11) and yards (97). Wide receiver D.K. Metcalf ranks third in the NFL with 408 yards and his 19.4 yards per catch ranks first among all eligible receivers.

The Seahawks have been able to get solid production out of rookies Zach Charbonnet and Jaxon Smith-Njigba as well, who both have acclimated well in the Seattle offense. Smith-Njigba ranks second on the team with 21 catches and 251 yards to go along with a touchdown. Charbonnet has rushed for 123 yards and a touchdown so far, with his best game coming last week against the New York Giants (6 rushes, 45 yards, TD).

If there were any sore spots on offense, we'd have to look to the offensive line that has allowed Smith to be sacked 13 times this season - tied for most in the NFL. Starting guard Damien Lewis has been ruled out for several weeks after tearing his labrum versus the Giants. Seattle could also use some additional production from the typically reliable Tyler Lockett (16 receptions, 178 yards, 2 TD) and tight end Noah Fant (9 catches, 84 yards, TD). Carroll hinted at the possibility of using more two tight end packages to help with pass blocking, which could lead to more opportunities for not only Fant, but Will Dissly as well. This gameplan seems all the more likely to be implemented now that Lewis has been ruled out, as rookie Anthony Bradford is next in line to replace Lewis.

Offensive Grade: A
--------------
DEFENSE
Offensively, there shouldn't be any need for concern, but the Seahawks' defense has been somewhat exposed in recent weeks, especially through the air. While they've made vast improvements to their run defense this season versus last season, the Seahawks ranked 2nd to last in the NFL in passing yards allowed per game, highlighted by last week's performance against Daniel Jones, who threw for 328 yards and 4 touchdowns. Carroll has attributed the performance to a lack of execution in zone coverage...the Seahawks have repeatedly been beaten by one or two receivers due to a missed zone assignment this season, particularly on 3rd downs.

"I think it's just been plays here and there where we've got to stay focused an execute," Carroll said. "Unfortunately for us these things are happening on the biggest plays - 3rd downs, 2nd and longs, and that kind of stuff. I'd say we've done a pretty good job of putting pressure on the quarterback but it's the back end - the coverage - that we're missing." Indeed, Seattle's 14 sacks is tied for first in the NFL, with Uchenna Nwosu leading the team in the sack department (4 sacks).

The return of Adams and Bobby Wagner is part of the reason for Seattle's improved run defense. In 3 games, Adams has totaled 32 tackles and a sack, while Wagner's not too far behind with 27 tackles and a sack through 4 games. The biggest surprises, however, have come from offseason acquisitions Julian Love (28 tackles, 1 sack) and Devin Bush (31 tackles, 1 sack), both of whom have taken on larger roles thanks to their impressive performances. The Seahawks could use more from rookie Devon Witherspoon and their young cornerbacks, such as Coby Bryant, Tre Brown, and even Tariq Woolen as far as pass coverage is concerned.

Defensive Grade: B-
--------------
What's Next for the Seahawks?
The Seahawks will be playing on either Sundays or Thursday nights for the next 13 weeks with no breaks in between. Here is their remaining schedule:
  • Week 6 - at Cincinnati
  • Week 7 - vs. Arizona
  • Week 8 - vs. Cleveland
  • Week 9 - at Baltimore
  • Week 10 - vs. Washington
  • Week 11 - at Los Angeles Rams
  • Week 12 - vs. San Francisco
  • Week 13 - at Dallas
  • Week 14 - at San Francisco
  • Week 15 - vs. Philadelphia
  • Week 16 - at Tennessee
  • Week 17 - vs. Pittsburgh

Seattle still has most of their divisional games to be played in addition to non-divisional matchups mostly against the AFC South and NFC East, arguably two of the better divisions so far this year. The Bengals (3-1), Ravens (4-0), and Steelers (3-1) all pose significant challenges, while out in the NFC East are still undefeated Philadelphia and Dallas.

Adjustments, especially on the defensive side of the football, are vital for Seattle moving forward.

// AROUND THE NFL - WEEK 5 \\

Image

// So who wants to face Philadelphia's defense after back-to-back shutouts?
Okay...if it wasn't enough for the Eagles to shut out the Commanders last week, just watch this week's game as they held the Los Angeles Rams to zero points as well. That's two straight shutouts for the Eagles, the second time in franchise history it's ever happened, with the first time being 75 years back in 1948. It's also the first time an NFL team has recorded back-to-back shutouts since the Rams (back then known as St. Louis) did it in the 2014 season.

Any questions about a 2023 slump following a Super Bowl loss last year to the Chiefs should be put to rest by this point as the Eagles move to 5-0 and stand alongside the Dallas Cowboys as the only teams left with an undefeated record. Equipped with a top 10 offense and top 5 defense, the Eagles are poised to make another deep run in the playoffs should their fortunes continue. Haason Reddick was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week after a 6 tackle, 4 sack performance.

Here were other things to note for Week 5:
  • Kirk Cousins and the Vikings receivers have been something to behold in 2023
If you take away the one possession loss to the undefeated Eagles, the Minnesota Vikings would be 4-0 this year. Most of that has to do with the offensive firepower the Vikings have displayed, led by none other than Cousins himself. He and Justin Herbert and have gone back and forth as far as exchanging the number 1 and 2 spots for most passing yards this season, and after the Chargers' bye week, Cousins finds himself back at the top again after a 306-yard, 3-touchdown performance in Minnesota's win over the Kansas City Chiefs. The prolific passing offense has allowed for Justin Jefferson and K.J. Osborn - yes, Osborn - to rank 1st and 2nd in the NFL in receiving yards. Osborn is also tied for the league lead in receiving touchdowns (7), with Jefferson just behind with 6 after snatching 3 scores against the Chiefs. Rookie wide receiver Jordan Addison looks like he's also picking things up. He recorded a season-high 10 catches and 140 yards on Sunday.
  • Optimism has returned to the Steel City after taking down the Ravens
Despite being outgained 380 yards to 298, the Pittsburgh Steelers still managed to defeat their AFC North rivals to not only move to 4-1, but also end Baltimore's undefeated season. Pittsburgh finds themselves right in the middle of a 3-way AFC North battle as they head into their bye week. The Steelers, Ravens, and Cincinnati Bengals are all 4-1, and Mike Tomlin's crew will look to maintain that momentum as the season progresses. They are seeking a return to the playoffs after narrowly missing it last season with a 9-8 record.
  • Jonathan Taylor, Cooper Kupp, and Kyler Murray among key players expected to return next week
The Colts dropped a tough game against the Titans on Sunday with Anthony Richardson throwing 4 interceptions, so Taylor's return to the field would be a big welcome for Indianapolis. Taylor was activated off the physically unable to perform list this week but did not play against Tennessee. He has, however, told reporters that he is committed to playing for the Colts this season, so there are expectations for him to suit up next Sunday when the Colts play the Jaguars in an important early season divisional game.

The Cardinals, on the other hand, are expected to have quarterback Kyler Murray back in the lineup after recovering from a torn ACL he suffered late last season. He inherits a winless Cardinals offense that is averaging 17.2 points per game (26th in NFL). The same can be said for wide receiver Cooper Kupp, who returns to a winless Rams team after recovering from a hamstring injury. His presence on the field will be much needed for Matthew Stafford, who's struggled so far this season with 7 interceptions thrown.

*Note current team rankings may not be truly reflected due to bye week

// Week 6 Preview: Cincinnati Bengals
// BY JEANIE ROTH

CINCINNATI, Oh. - The Seahawks kick off their first game after the bye week on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals as they look to rebound from a Week 4 loss to the New York Giants.

Bengals Statistical Leaders
  • QB Joe Burrow: 1,282 passing yards (3rd in NFL), 10 touchdowns
  • HB Joe Mixon: 433 rushing yards (4th in NFL), 1 touchdown, 5.2 yards per carry
  • WR Ja'Marr Chase: 367 receiving yards, 3 touchdowns
  • LB Jermaine Pratt, 40 tackles, 4 tackles for loss, 1 sack

The Bengals are riding a three-game win streak and are now back home at Paycor Stadium eyeing a 4th consecutive victory. Cincinnati's offense is led by Joe Burrow, who currently ranks 3rd in the NFL in passing yards. As seen in previous seasons, the Bengals are not short of offensive weapons - lining up in the backfield with Burrow is Joe Mixon, who is ranked 4th in rushing yards despite finding the end zone just once thus far. Cincinnati's best group is arguably their wide receivers, which is led by Ja'Marr Chase (367 yards and 3 touchdowns). While they take a secondary role in the offense, Tee Higgins (233 yards and 4 touchdowns) and Tyler Boyd (219 yards and 1 touchdown) can both easily provide a spark as well.

It hasn't just been the offense that's the reason for the winning stream the Bengals have been on. Their defense, although giving up the 19th-most yards per game, have allowed the 9th-fewest points per game. They now face a Seahawks offense that averages just under 30 points per game.

Things to Watch For
  • Cincinnati's passing attack vs. the Seahawks secondary
Passing defense has been an area of focus for the Seahawks for the past two weeks after allowing Daniel Jones to throw for 300+ yards and 4 touchdowns, and it will likely be a key factor in Sunday's matchup with the Bengals. The weather forecast calls for heavy rain during Sunday's contest which may have an impact on the play calling, but head coach Pete Carroll says it hasn't played a role in the Seahawks' defensive gameplan. "We practice to try and contain teams both on the ground and through the air. Obviously their offense can do both things with Burrow and Mixon so we have to ready for both situations."
  • The battle for time of possession
Both teams have proven that they can put a lot of points on the scoreboard, and it's possible that this game can come down to the final possession. The Seahawks may want to try to keep the ball in their possession for as much as possible to provide coverage for a struggling defense, meaning Sunday's game may be dictated by Kenneth Walker III and Seattle's dominating ground game.

Tyler Lockett recorded his first 100-yard game this season in Seattle's victory over the Bengals.

// Seahawks escape Cincinnati with win despite special teams woes
CINCINNATI, Ohio - It's rare for place kickers to come out and verbally announce that the blame is on them for their team's struggles, but Seattle's Jason Myers wanted Seahawks fans to know that he was the reason for Seattle's near-loss today against the Cincinnati Bengals.

"Rain or no rain, I'm paid to make field goals and extra points, so missing to me is unacceptable and I take full responsibility for almost costing our team a win," Myers told reporters. The 8th-year veteran missed a field goal and two extra points in the heavy rain today as the Seahawks defeated the Bengals 33-30, thanks to an 18-yard field goal Myers converted with 22 seconds remaining in the 4th quarter. Cincinnati place-kicker Evan McPherson on the other hand converted on all 3 of his field goal attempts, including a 59-yard field goal that gave the Bengals their first lead of the game early in the 4th quarter.

Seattle punter Michael Dickson also struggled in the weather, averaging 21 yards per punt on two punts that allowed the Bengals to have advantageous starting positions in the 3rd quarter that allowed them to climb back into the contest after falling behind 22-10. The Seahawks - who are used to playing in wet conditions out in the Pacific Northwest - found the rain to be a challenge in Ohio.

It was Seattle, however, that got the last laugh as their offense continued to make headlines 6 weeks into the 2023 NFL season. Seattle gained 516 yards on offense, with 211 of those coming on the ground - Kenneth Walker III rushed for 139 yards and a touchdown to lead Seattle's rushing attack. Geno Smith completed 80 percent (20 for 25) of his passes for 309 yards and 2 touchdowns. Tyler Lockett managed to record his first 100-yard receiving game after a relatively quiet start to the season for the veteran, and Noah Fant also found himself on the receiving end of a Smith touchdown pass. He finished with 52 yards on 3 catches. D.K. Metcalf and Jaxon Smith-Njigba recorded 87 and 56 yards, respectively.

Seattle's defense held the Bengals to a season-low 71 rushing yards but saw Joe Burrow throw for 305 yards and a touchdown. While Tariq Woolen seemed to answer head coach Pete Carroll's challenge of performing better on defense - he was the primary man on Cincinnati's Ja'Marr Chase, who only caught 2 passes for 29 yards - it was Tee Higgins who torched the Seahawks secondary for 118 yards, 79 of which came on busted coverage and led to a late Irv Smith Jr. touchdown that tied the game with 4 minutes remaining.

Burrow was unable to get a final throw off as time expired when Darrell Taylor sacked him to end the game.

When asked about his thought's on Seattle's pass defense this week, Carroll told reporters, "We were better...it was those chunk plays that killed us. There's still some cleaning up we need to do but besides that, I'm a little happier compared to the last time [versus the Giants]." In addition to Higgins' 79-yard catch, the Seahawks also allowed backup tight end Drew Sample to get free for a 50-yard catch and run.

The Seahawks moved to 4-1 after the victory and now travel home to host the Arizona Cardinals.

Scoring Summary
