Commanders roll dice on Williams in third
Williams, Brissett and Howell all expected to compete for QB1
By Hogs Haven Staff

"We never expected him to be there that late." Commanders GM Martin Mayhew explained when asked about his decision to draft QB Cap Williams III with the Commanders third round pick. "That's a lot of talent to pass on at a position that we're not really sure about at this time."

Williams, who led South Alabama to a ten win season for the first time since the school officially joined the FCS in 2012, could not be reached but posted the following Tweet.

****************

Williams led Thompson High school to a class 7A championship as a senior in 2019 after taking over for Tualia Tagavialoa. Williams committed to Alabama and after redshirting in 2020 narrowly lost a QB competition to Bryce Young. Williams eventually left Alabama midway through the season and entered the transfer portal. South Alabama offered him the opportunity to start immediately and Williams helped the team double their win total from 2021 when they went 5-7.

Williams popped up on the national radar in mid September when he nearly led South Alabama to an upset over UCLA before losing 31-32 on a last second field goal by the Bruins.

Williams led the team to a 5-1 record to start the season before missing a game against Troy that the team lost in his absence, scoring only six points. Williams returned the next week and led the team to five straight wins, giving them a 10-2 record and an invite to the New Orleans Bowl. Williams led the team to scores on their first three possessions but was hit in the head on a slide on their first play of their fourth possession and was ruled out of the rest of the game due to concussion protocol. Western Kentucky went on to win the game.

Williams threw for 3,327 yards with 28 touchdowns to just four interceptions. He also ran for 463 yards and 11 touchdowns. By January Williams was popping up in the first round on mock drafts, with some having him ranked as high as third among quarterbacks. Things went south for Williams in early February when he was arrested for a DUI in his hometown and forced to miss the Senior Bowl. The arrest led to the NFL rescinding his invitation to the combine.

A week later at South Alabama's Pro Day Williams did a full combine workout for around 20 NFL teams, putting up the following numbers:

Bench: 13 Reps (8th among QBs)
40 Yard Dash: (2nd among QBs)
Broad Jump: 10'1" (5th among QBs)
20 Yard Shuttle: 4.21 (2nd among QBs)

Afterwards Williams performed very well in throwing drills, hitting every pass he was asked to and showing off a live arm.
