Chapter I: Road To The Big Game
6 A.M., Thursday morning. Life began to stir in the quiet town of Danville. While the songs of the birds chirping and the dew had filtered the air, inside the home of Jodi's, the aroma of food took to noses. Cassia was up earlier than usual, making a hearty breakfast for the two.
"Jodiiiiii!... Jodiiiii! Come on, food's ready! Up! Up! Up!" She shouted up the stairs, not straying away from the kitchen as the food was just about ready to come off the stove.
"Yeah, yeah, I'm up. Good morning..." Jodi had been up as well, getting a morning session on the treadmill. Having spent majority of the night restless, a good 5K sprint would help take the edge off as he was anxious today's game. Making his way to the kitchen and stepping in front of the fridge, he opens the cold cabin for a Gatorade bottle.
"Good morning to you- Jodi, what have I told you about coming into the kitchen in only your boxers? Have some decency. Lord knows if anything falls out, you'd be the snickers of all the can goods."
"I know, I just wanted to grab a bottle real quick."
"Back upstairs you go, get dress! Come on, you're going to be late. You know you have to catch the school bus until Mr. Alex comes and fix your car."
"Copy, copy." Jodi headed back upstairs to his, getting him-self dressed and ready for the school day. Slicking his way back to the kitchen, Jodi grabs a bagel, scraping butter on both halves before filling it scrambled eggs and one open cut sausage.
"You're ready for the big game tonight, Jodi? I hear some scouts will be in attendance tonight. They've been talking about you for a while now, haven't they?"
"Yeah, basically since last year. Couple of schools been recruiting me hard, but I still haven't came to a decision."
"Well, you're gonna' have to make up your mind soon, sweety. The last thing you want to do is miss your opportunity. These programs don't wait forever. You're a senior now, practically an adult, you have to start thinking about your next step in life."
"I know, I know. Everything is just a lot right now. School exams coming up, practice, workouts, and Prisha."
"Oh yes, Prisha." Cassia snidely retorted.
"What's up? Is that jealousy I hear in your voice? I know you're not sad I'm spending a little time with her."
"Jealous, kid, I'm twice your age with a my mind at peace, but I can't help but think you can do so much better. Plus, if you're going to go to college, it will be extremely difficult to navigate both waters in school & relationship."
"I know. I thought about calling it off, getting some space and focus on my-self."
"That sounds like the best idea. I'm sure you'll meet plenty and better girls along the way."
"What's wrong with Prisha?"
Just as Jodi was about to get an answer, the school bus had arrived just outside, blowing the horn. "Save by the school bus! You make sure you have everything and have a good day at school, sweety." With a quick hug and kiss, Cassia sent Jodi on his way to the front door. "There's some cash for lunch in the key tray if you need it."
After an extended bus ride due to traffic, Jodi makes it to Monte Vista, home of the Mustangs. Stepping off the bus, he notices a bit of chill in the air, looking up and seeing white particles descending from the heavens. Jodi takes his phone out to check the weather app, which called for light snow flurries for the morning, expecting to clear up by afternoon. "Man I hope the weather doesn't get wonky tonight, it's cold enough as it is already."
"You can say that again", a familiar voice is heard coming from the right of Jodi. "What's up dude? Didn't think you'd make it today with your car troubles."
Realizing it's his friend Tyrone, Jodi extends his hand for a bro hug, "Naah, tonight's the start of the state playoffs. Of all days I want to miss school, today isn't one of them". Jodi checks his watch, seeing it's 7:15 A.M. "You're here early. You're usually not here for another two hours with your late ass."
"Cut me some slack, I was able to catch the bus today."
"Mom is off today, huh?"
"You know it. You know how she gets, she's not having it."
"She still working those long ass shifts at the hospital? Least you can do is get up and be on time."
"Well, big shits on you "Mr. Responsible". Ms. Henderson got us stuck with that dumb ass class project, had me up all night."
"Better you than me. I would have stuck that shit on Landry, his nerdy ass love that science stuff."
"You're lucky you got class with him, I'd definitely would have. Shit... You think he'd still help out? I'm not even done working on it."
"He might, no harm in asking." Jodi shrugged.
The two took a walk through the school corridors, scouting the scene on who's here and not. Several students greeted Jodi, wishing him good luck in tonight's game. Just as they were passing the lockers to the cafe, a voice shouted Jodi's name from down the hall, screeching Jodi and Tyrone's motion to a halt.
"Aw shit, here we go again." Jodi mumble under his breath as he turned around to his longtime girlfriend, Prisha. "Morning, Prisha."
"Mhm, why haven't you returned my calls last night?"
"I was busy. When I freed up, it was already past midnight. You think I'ma actually call when you should be sleep?"
"And? So what? Call back anyway." Prisha retorted.
"Good morning, Prisha." Tyrone interjected but was coldly ignored without the slightest acknowledgement.
"And then I had to ride the bus to school, again. When are you going to get your car fixed? Don't tell me you and your mom can't afford to fix that simple junk machine-"
"Prisha, I would advise you take to take heed in respecting my mother-"
"Foster mother. Get it straight."
"Yeah, I'm doing fine, and yourself? Thanks for asking." blurted out from the sideline, still seeking acknowledgement.
"That doesn't matter. She's still my mom. Besides, not every mom can be a whore like yours. Some of them have respect for themselves."
"Pft! Whatever! You don't know my mom, I don't even know why I deal with you sometimes. But I guess you still have your uses."
"I wish I could say the same for your goofy ass."
"Goofy? No honey, you want "goofy", you talk to him behind you, I don't do goofy."
"So, I'm not invisible after all." Tyrone says with a smirk.
"Whatever Prisha, I'll talk to your silly ass later, when you get some decency with that mouth of yours. I don't have time for your charades today. We got a game today and I gotta get through the day without you stressing me out over your pampered ass."
"Ugh! Whatever" Prisha shot back with disgust. "Do you have that book for Ms. Bell class? That's all I really came to you for." Prisha asked with her hand extended out. Jodi takes off his book bag with his brooding eyes locked on Prisha, making it clear to her that he had enough of the games. After a moment's search through the back, he hands her the class book.
"Thank you, see, you have your uses, plus you're cute too."
"Whatever, Prisha, bye." Jodi quickly zips up his bag and exit towards the cafe, "Come on Ty."
"Rude ass! Bye!" Prisha shouted.
Tyrone shakes his head as he walked along with Jodi, "Man, that broad is toxic as fuck. Why do you still put up with her ass?"
"... She keeps things exciting." Jodi replied nonchalantly. Not having a real answer to the burning question as he thought back to the conversation with Cassia earlier this morning.
"Please don't kid like that, Jodi. That trick is a nut case, straight bad news."
"You say that as if I don't know that."
"So why you're still with her? Yo, there's plenty of honeys that would probably flock to your feet if you make yourself a free agent."
"I get it, but she's mine. She belongs to me, that's the end of that. I'll dust her ass when I'm ready, if I'm ready. And I would appreciate you put some respect on her name in my presence, Ty. Have a little decency for yourself, your shit don't smell no different from hers."
"You say so man. I'm just saying, I wouldn't be caught dead with that looney toon..."
With about 20 minutes left before class started, the boys entertained themselves with the few of Jodi's football teammates that resided in the cafe for the duration. With the car still on the mend, crazy girlfriend starting shit in the morning for no reason, Jodi knew it was going to be a long day. But what kept him motivated to push through was the first round of the CIF state playoffs.
The end of the day had finally arrived and the final period had finally let out. the students rushed to bag up their things as Mrs. Crawford detailed tomorrow's homework turn-in and lessons. Jodi was the last to make it the room's door just as the teacher reaches out to him.
"Mr. Rogue, stay for a minute." Mrs. Crawford requested.
"What's up? Something's the matter?"
"No, not quite. I just wanted to say that I've noticed the steady improvement you've made this year in class. You started out with an average C+, bringing it up to an A-, I'm impressed and quite proud of the work you've done."
"Thanks Mrs. Crawford. I learned my lesson last year, that I got to keep my grades in check if I wanted to stay on the team. I know I can't slack up anymore."
"You're absolutely correct. But it's more than just sports, Jodi. You actually learning, training your brain, keeping up your smarts, it'll lead you to bigger things in life. I want nothing but the very best for all of my students, and seeing you excel is the greatest reward for my-self."
"Uh, you're welcome?" Jodi says with a bit of uncertainty.
"Thank you, Jodi. Just seeing you bring your grades up is enough for me. Besides, some scouts will be here in attendance for the game tonight, I'm sure whichever school that's interested in you will also have concerns of your academics. So it's nice to have them up to snuff."
"Come on, Mrs. Crawford. They don't really care about that stuff. All they care about is how good you are and how marketable you are to bring money into the school."
"Oh, the contraire, young padawan. Even in college, students-athletes have to maintain the minimum requirements of grades to stay on any program's team. You fall off and can lead to you getting outed."
"Young who?"
"Nevermind that." Mrs. Crawford said with a sigh and chuckle. "Just keep up the good work, Jodi. I'm really proud of how far you've come since your freshmen year here."
"Thanks, Mrs. Crawford." Just as Jodi was about to head out, he doubles back to his teacher to inquire something else. "Hey Teach, you think I can get a delay in tomorrow's essay turn-in?"
"What for? Is it not done?"
"No, with practice and other personal stuff, I couldn't find the time this week, I've been getting home so late."
"Well, that's really no excuse, Jodi. You've had three days. There's going to come a time in life, in the real world, pressure and time-sensitive agendas will burden you. How you adapt and adjust to them will determine your success or failure."
"I know Mrs. Crawford, you're right. I'm just asking to turn it in Monday. I'll even tack on an extra 3,000 words to the essay. I just need this solid. Tonight's the game, and I just want to have my focus on one thing at a time."
Mrs. Crawford mulls over the request as Jodi gleams at her with a bit of hope in her saying yes, almost going as far as giving her puppy dog eyes. "Alright, Jodi, just this once. The essay remains the same, 3,000 words, no need for the additional. I have enough to read through and grade. But you will have it in my hands before home class. Are we clear?"
"Yes m'am, crystal. Thank you, Mrs. Crawford, I owe you." Jodi makes his exit of his last class, bumping into Tyrone in the hallway.
"What's up, Jodi? Got in trouble with Mrs. Crawford? She's always on my ass about school work." Tyrone tosses the football he had cuffed in his arm at Jodi.
"Man, you need to get on your shit with that or you'll never graduate. Remember, you almost got left back in sophomore."
"Almost, but they can't hold me back. I'm too smart for these hallways, I'm damn near a wizard."
"Whatever, Ty. She was just telling me my grades and gave me an extension on that essay we gotta do."
"Essay? She didn't tell my class anything about an essay."
"I think she kept you out of the loop, I don't think she expects you to actually do it." Jodi jokes. "Hey, you speak to Landry about the project yet?"
"Yeah, he said he'll stop by this weekend to lend me a hand."
"And? What's the catch? You know Landry don't do anything for free."
Tyrone sighed at the notion, "He wants me to join him at his geeky ass book club, something about Jujutsu Kaisen."
"Landry's in a manga club? I didn't know that. But I'll never understand how you like anime but not the manga that their derived from."
"Different strokes for different folks." Tyrone answered as he returns the football
"Speaking of folks, is Prisha still around?"
"Nah, I seen her leave with some of her girlfriends just a few ago. You miss your crazy girly after this morning's spat?"
"Funny, but no. Exactly why I'm avoid her today. Just wanna focus on tonight without stress."
"I hear you, man. Man! I can't believe we're in the state playoffs! I don't think our school has ever made it to the biggest tournament."
"I know, right? Coach finally put something good of this team together, I just wish it came sooner."
"Hey, better now than never. But I get it, senior year, you're not going to really enjoy that fame next year in these hallways."
"Hey, if anything, you can tell them of my legend next year if they don't graduate you."
"Haha, fuck you Jodi, don't have me send Melvin on you, "baby boy"." Tyrone joked back.
"Very original, Ty. But I'll catch up with you later, duty calls in the weight room before Coach calls us to the locker room. You'll be at the game tonight?"
"You know it, bro. Wouldn't miss seeing my guy make history."
"Aight fam." Jodi daps up Tyrone as he handed the football back to him. Just as the two headed their separate ways, Jodi phone receives a text message from Prisha.
[Prisha: We need to talk this weekend.]
[Jodi: About what?]
[Prisha: We'll talk this weekend. You're dismissed until then, toodles.]
Jodi's head falls back on his neck, staring into the space of the ceiling, letting out a heavy sigh before putting his phone back into his jacket pocket, "I swear I can't with this bitch..."
