South Alabama hiring Inglewood's Jerome Singleton as defensive coordinator
Will Stephenson -- AL.com Sports Writer
Jerome Singleton is coming back to the state of Alabama as South Alabama's next defensive coordinator, sources confirmed to AL.com on Friday.
Singleton was an analyst at the University of Alabama for two seasons along with recently promoted South Alabama head coach Major Applewhite who left Tuscaloosa in 2021 to become the Jaguars' offensive coordinator.
The 32-year old replaces Corey Batoon, who is leaving to become defensive coordinator at Missouri. A Los Angeles native, Singleton played college football at both UCLA and USC with pitstops at Laney College and San Jose State in between before graduating from USC.
After a two-year stint in the NFL with the St. Louis/Los Angeles Rams, Singleton began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Cal University under head coach Justin Wilcox, who was Singleton's defensive coordinator with the Trojans. He would return to the NFL as a coaching intern with the Rams before reuniting with Steve Sarkisian at Alabama.
Singleton has spent the past three years as the head coach at Inglewood High School (Inglewood, Ca) where he has led the Sentinels to an impressive 36-3 record.
The news of Singleton's hiring was first reported by Daily Breeze.

The anatomy of a defense; inside Jerome Singleton's 3-3-5 defense
Doug Dunning -- 247 Sports South Alabama Insider
It's easy to see why and how newly hired South Alabama DC Jerome Singleton was so successful at Inglewood High School, winning thirty-six games in his three seasons as head coach of the Sentinels in his first ever on-field coaching job.
Even in his brief interactions with the media throughout the spring, Singleton's passion is evident and his love for the game of football bleeds onto the players who have only known him for a few weeks.
"I consider myself a football junkie," says junior safety Mike Harris, "So whenever you're around someone like [Singleton], you feel right at home, and he makes you care even more than you did before. You can just tell that he loves what he's doing, and he loves putting us in positions to win."
Singleton's passion might only be second to his defensive mind, which head coach Major Applewhite described as an 'evil genius' when it comes to scheming up defenses. Singleton cites Cal head coach Justin Wilcox as a huge influence on how he runs his defense, having called the defensive plays for the Sentinels during his tenure as head coach.
In his first lengthy interaction with the media, Singleton described his defense as a three-man front with a 'nickel-like' personnel as the base defense. Let's preview the type of defense that Singleton might run at South Alabama based on his previous defenses at Inglewood HS, Wilcox's defense at USC and Cal along with the personnel that the Jaguars currently have.
Defensive End
Current Roster: #51 Courtney McBride (Sr, 6'3", 235lbs), #95 Jalyn Durgan (Jr, 6'4", 250lbs), #21 Jordan Norman (Fr, 6'3", 239lbs), #20 Lamondre Brooks (Jr, 6'2", 241lbs)
Prototype: 6'1" - 6'5", 240lbs+, twitched up athlete that is able to both set the edge and rush the passer. Expect a combination of both Durgan and McBride at this position with Durgan providing some positional versatility with his ability to play both end and tackle with his size.
Defensive Tackle
Current Roster: #91 Nathan Jennings (Fr, 6'4", 270lbs), #30 Achilles Woods (Fr, 6'4", 260lbs), #59 Greg McTraylor (So, 6'5", 264lbs), #18 RJ Moss Jr. (So, 6'4", 266lbs)
Prototype: 6'3"+, 265lbs+, powerful athlete that has just enough juice to be an effective pass rusher from the five-technique but whose primary responsibility will be stopping the run. The Jaguars don't have a natural fit for this position, outside of a couple of young guys in Jennings, Woods and McTraylor that are all unproven. Jalyn Durgan will likely need to play this role as well, even though he's a more natural defensive end.
Nose Guard
Current Roster: #55 Maurice Strong (Sr, 6'2", 294lbs), #90 Carlos Johnson Jr. (Sr, 6'0", 282lbs), #85 Venson Dobson (Sr, 6'5", 310lbs), #68 Josh Thurman (Jr, 6'4", 284lbs), #88 Randy Noble (Fr, 6'2", 289lbs), #45 Ed Smith IV (Jr, 6'2", 290lbs)
Prototype: 6'0"+, 300lbs+, space eating nose tackle that frees up the back eight to do what they do. In an ideal world, a lot of the guys on USA's roster will be at defensive tackle with the only true nose body being Dobson. It's even more concerning that there's not much youth at this position beyond Randy Noble. While Strong doesn't have the prototypical size, his name is very apropos as he might be the Jaguars' strongest player. He won't fill up the stat sheet but he'll be an important piece to a Jaguars defense that finished top three in the Sun Belt in scoring defense.
SAM Linebacker
Current Roster: #10 Aakil Washington (Sr, 6'3", 240lbs), #39 Dalton Hughes (Jr, 6'2", 226lbs)
Prototype: 6'2"-6'5", 225lbs+ athletic body that might be the most pivotal piece of the front six as SAM will be asked to cover, rush the passer and be a ball-chasing tackling machine all within the same drive depending on the front that's being played. We'll list Hughes here as a courtesy since he has played the position since Singleton's arrival as Washington's backup but this position is truly Washington or bust. Could a guy like Courtney McBride potentially play this position in a pinch? Sure but he's also their best pass rusher so they'll likely want to keep him at end as much as they can.
MIKE Linebacker
Current Roster: #43 Taylor Milton (Sr, 6'3", 230lbs), #92 James Calhoun (So, 6'1", 229lbs), #52 Otis Cunningham (Jr, 6'0", 230lbs)
Prototype: Just your standard six-feet plus, 210-pound inside linebacker that will need to be quick enough to shoot gaps and avoid taking on blockers in this lighter six-man front. Singleton primarily ran Cover 3 at Inglewood so this will need to be good athlete which the Jaguars have in Calhoun while Milton, the likely starter, is a good-enough athlete whose reliability as a tackler makes up for it.
WILL Linebacker
Current Roster: #32 Blayne Myrick (So, 6'2", 238lbs), #27 Gavin Forsha (Jr, 6'3", 225lbs), #58 Dennis Overstreet (So, 6'2", 235lbs)
Prototype: Think oversized safety for this position as they will be asked from time to time to cover tight ends or slot receivers in man coverage as well as the seams in zone coverage. Myrick struggled in coverage at times this spring so this is a position that bears watching as Calhoun might be the more natural fit for this position right now although the coaching staff also loves him at MIKE linebacker. This could end up being a platoon position where all three underclassmen -- and Calhoun -- end up taking significant snaps at this position.
Cornerback
Current Roster: #6 Ricky Fletcher (Jr, 6'2", 186lbs), #17 Reggie Neely (Jr, 6'0", 175lbs), #8 Jordan Scruggs (Jr, 5'11", 175lbs), #19 Dallas Gamble (Sr, 6'0", 196lbs), #34 Jordan Buchanan (So, 6'1", 168lbs), #24 Josh Bledsoe (Fr, 6'0", 169lbs), #37 Trent McCain (Fr, 5'9", 195lbs), #44 Darrell Cox (Fr, 6'2", 195lbs)
Prototype: Singleton does a pretty good job of covering up his corners as its a zone heavy defense that puts a lot more pressures on its linebackers and safeties than the corners who are typically in cover 3 or some sort of inverted cover 2. This is of course with a caveat as when Singleton does dial up the pressure, he tends to leave his corners on an island with not much disguise in coverage. Outside of Neely, there might not be a true man-to-man corner on the roster so it'll be important for Singleton to adjust to his personnel.
Rover
Current Roster: #7 Lardarius Webb Jr. (Jr, 5'10", 170lbs), #31 Mike Harris (Jr, 5'10", 168lbs), #33 Tevin McQueen (Fr, 6'0", 200lbs), #23 Tremel States-Jones (So, 6'0", 200lbs), #26 Brian Dillard (Jr, 6'2", 190lbs)
Prototype: Ideally, this would be an undersized linebacker (5'10"-6'2", 190lbs+) that is a good enough athlete to survive out in space but the Jaguars simply don't have that athletic profile right now. It'll probably end up being either Webb or Harris, whoever doesn't start at strong safety. A name to watch to see if they can carve out a role down the line is States-Jones who looks the part of the position but needs to improve in coverage.
Strong Safety
Current Roster: #7 Lardarius Webb Jr. (Jr, 5'10", 170lbs), #31 Mike Harris (Jr, 5'10", 168lbs), #28 Amarion Fortenberry (Fr, 6'0", 175lbs)
Prototype: Similar to Rover except with the occasional deep safety responsibility. This was primarily Harris in the spring but either him or Webb are pretty exchangeable at this position and Rover so for most viewers, won't be much of a difference when they are both on the field.
Free Safety
Current Roster: #2 Jaden Voisin (Sr, 6'0", 205lbs), #29 Wesley Miller (So, 5'11", 188lbs), #13 Christopher Wallace Jr. (Jr, 6'0", 193lbs), #47 Cordell Hood (So, 6'1", 200lbs), #15 Jonathan Gatson (Fr, 5'9", 195lbs)
Prototype: Think Ed Reed and while Voisin is far from that, the Jaguars luck out that their most important position on defense also belongs to their best player on defense and potentially the whole team. The All-Sun Belt selection can play anywhere on the field in the secondary but they'll likely keep him at center field, patrolling the defense. A name to watch is Wesley Miller who is simply too talented to not play this year, especially in the transfer portal era. Another name to watch is Wallace who might all end up having a role on the defense at some point this year.
