Yeah, it didn't go so well. I was rotating the backs. Info is in the next article.

Bulldogs News
September 9th, 2013

‣ Coach Richt comments on running back situation

With two games already in the books, it was time for Georgia head coach Mark Richt to finally make a comment on his running back situation. The Bulldogs have been splitting time to the talented duo of Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall. The running backs were switching out on every series. This experiment has not worked out in favor for the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs are 0-2 and the running game has been anemic in both games. Combined Todd Gurley has 130 yards on 33 carries for an average of 3.9 and Keith Marshall has 24 yards on 17 carries for an average of 1.4. Neither running back has found their way to the end zone.

In his post-game press conference head coach Mark Richt finally commented on the scenario.

"The experiment is over. What we were doing was not obviously working and we have to get things together. Both of these young men are extremely talented and both will continue to see play time; however, we were not giving either a chance to get in a rhythm and our whole running game has suffered because of it."

When asked about who will fill the starting role coach Richt commented that was not determined at the moment and would be something they would focus on during the bye week. Regardless of who gets the starting job, this will be a key point for Georgia. One of these running backs will need to make an impact for Georgia to have an offense viable for them to live up to the high expectations of the pre-season.

‣ Coach Bobo talks Aaron Murray

After a rough outing for Aaron Murray, offensive coordinator Mike Bobo took time to cover for Aaron Murray's play against South Carolina.

"Aaron had a decent game going. The last two picks were entirely my fault. I told him on those plays to force the throw. I don't care how many people were in coverage."

This comment drew criticism from many of the Bulldog faithful. There were very high expectations for Murray coming into the season but he currently has a TD/INT ratio of 3/5 which does not bode well for a redshirt senior. Despite that poor statistic Murray is still completing 64% of his passes and is 25th in the NCAA in passing yards. If Georgia can find a way to get a good running game behind him look for Murray to break out and put up some great numbers.

‣ Bulldogs not quite in panic mode in bye week

Georgia is currently winless in two games. That will cause many of the Georgia faithful to start talking about doom and gloom and start smashing the panic button. However, the feeling around the locker room is still very upbeat. Two losses make it tough for the Bulldogs to clinch a berth in the BCS championship but they only have 1 loss in the SEC.

With the renewed focus on the running game, Georiga will be looking to make an impact on the ground that will carry the offense. Todd Gurley looks to be the leading candidate to take over the brunt of the running game as he has outperformed Keith Marshall so far this year.

On the other side of the ball, Georgia has a bleaker outlook. The Bulldogs are giving up an average of 377 yards of offense per game on defense. They currently sit in dead last in the SEC for defense. This is split out pretty evenly with 205 yards per game coming in the air and 172 yards per game coming on the ground. If Georgia can limit the turnovers on offense this can help them in their quest for defensive dominance.

One interesting note on the defensive side is that sophomore safety Josh Harvey-Clemons currently leads the team in tackles with 17 tackles. The closest players behind him are linebackers Jordan Jenkins and Armarlo Herrera with 14 and 13 tackles respectively. Georgia is going to need those linebackers to step up in order for this defense to solidify. If the leading tackler is on the second level of the defense that does not spell out success for Georgia.

‣ Gurley cements starting job

After having one of the worst rushing attacks in the nation Georgia has bounced back behind the legs of Todd Gurley. Georgia's offense flourished with a running game as they beat North Texas 48-7. Georgia rushed for 218 yards as a team with 151 yards and 4 touchdowns coming from Gurley.

This was a relief for Georgia fans who saw both of the talent running backs on their team produce little yards on the ground. This seems to be due to a rotation that inhibited both running backs from gaining any momentum when it came to carrying the ball. Before the North Texas game head coach Mark Richt announced an end to the rotation and annoucned Gurley as the starter.

However, the re-emergence of the running game came against a weaker opponent. This week Georgia hosts #18 LSU and will really find out if the running game is revitalized or if it was a fluke against North Texas.

‣ Big weekend for Georgia recruiting

Georgia has a unique ability to make a large recruiting impact this week against LSU. Coach Mark Richt and his staff have elected to have 9 recruits attend the LSU game. The matchup between two teams ranked in the top 20 will also be one of the highlight games of the weekend as well.

One of the recruits visiting is the #1 FS in the country, Mike Smith. Smith comes from Fargo, ND and stands tall at 6'5" 210 pounds. Georgia has already offered Smith a scholarship and the rumor is that if Georgia impresses this weekend then Smith will sign with the Bulldogs.

Other recruits visiting are the #2 DE in the country Sam Sharpe, #13 G Brandon McCauley, #1 SS Chad Dickson, #6 TE Will Fowler, #5 DT Maurice Fields, #1 QB Aaron Hawkins, #10 T Andre McDonald, and #2 OLB Alex Smith.

That list is very impressive and Georgia would be happy to have any of them sign with the Bulldogs.

‣ Tigers come prowling to Sanford Stadium

A week after getting beat by Auburn 35-14, LSU comes into Athens looking for redemption. The LSU was embarrassed at home by Auburn but that isn't going to define thier season. Head coach Les Miles continued to talk about the importance of learning from the game and moving on in his post game press conference. It can be almost assured that LSU will come out this week looking to impress after last week's effort.

The QB position is still up in the air as redshirt senior Zach Mettenberger is listed as probable following an abdominal tear. Mettenberger is 20-43 on the season with 302 yards and 4 touchdowns. While Mettenberger has been hurt sophomore Stephen Rivers has stepped up to lead the Tigers. Rivers is 19-39 on the year with 251 yards, 5 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Les Miles has been tight lipped on who will start the game for the Tigers but the Bulldogs will surely hope that it is Rivers due to his inexpereince.

The running back position is strongly anchored by sophomore Jeremy Hill. Hill has rushed 84 times for 505 yards and 4 touchdowns this season. The powerful 6'2" 235 pound Hill will be a force that wears down the Georgia defense. Receiver Jarvis Landry will also be looking to cut through the Georgia secondary. LSU's leading receiver, Landry, has 11 catches on the year for 144 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Defensively, redshirt senior Lamin Barrow is leading the team with 21 tackles, and 6 tackles for loss. His ability to fly across the field and interrupt the running game will be huge for LSU if they want to stop Todd Gurley. LSU also has 3 interceptions on the year from their secondary. One each from cornerback Jalen Mills, safety Ronald Martin, and safety Craig Loston. The secondary will be tested by Aaron Murray in this game as he continues to improve with improvements in the running game.

Look for this battle to be a tough one for both teams. If Georgia can get the running game going they will put themselves in a good position to win. On the defensive end of things Georgia will need to come up with a solution to stop Jeremy Hill. Georgia's rush defense looked weak last week before North Texas abandoned it due to the defeicit.

This is what happens when I stop forcing him to split carries. He is going off.
