PHILIP RIVERS WILL BE 38 IN DECEMBER

SHOULD THE CHARGERS GO "ALL IN"?

Philip Rivers is about to turn 38 and is in his 15th season in the NFL.

The Chargers made it to the AFC Championship game last season. They beat up on Jacksonville in the Wildcard round then steamrolled Tom Brady and the Patriots on the road in the Divisional Round.

A close loss to the Steelers kept them form making it to their first Superbowl since the mid 1990s.

On paper the Chargers are one of the top teams in the AFC and may be just a couple pieces away from a super bowl win. They have some weaknesses on the offensive line that they were unable to address in free agency or the draft and their linebacker group could use a boost.

The team released and then re-signed RT Joe Barksdale and he looks to be the best option at the position. They would love to upgrade either tackle position and could move Russel Okung to RT which would in essence upgrade two of the spots on the offensive line.

The team drafted two linebackers but we would love to see an upgrade to that group to a more consistent player. They do have versatility at the position so an upgrade at any of the spots would allow them to put the best two or three players on the field all the time.

Wide receiver could use a bit of depth with Allen, Benjamin and Williams as the likely starters. Rookie Cameron Vermiglio is a legitimate deep threat but needs a lot of work on route running to be a regular contributor.

With Rivers in the twilight of his career and the window seemingly closing soon should the Chargers go into a win now mode? Should they make a couple moves for key pieces and make a real run at it? Let us know what you think in the comments.

CHARGERS NEWS

JASON PETERS IS COMING OUT WEST AFTER A TRADE WITH THE EAGLES

CHARGERS TRADE FOR PETERS, IMPROVE OL

Philip Rivers has a new enforcer on his blind side. The Chargers have sent a 2021 4th round pick and WR Artavis Scott to the Eagles in exchange for the 37 year old tackle. Peters became expendable when the Eagles drafted Duncan Cameron.

The Eagles attempted to get more for Peters but the veteran's no trade clause made things difficult for them.

The Chargers had some competition from other teams but sweetened the deal with Scott, a player the Eagles were interested in following the 2017 draft.

The acquisition of Peters likely means that Okung will move to RT and Barksdale will become the teams swing tackle.

Peters is not expected to play in the preseason opener against the Colts.

BENJAMIN CELEBRATES A CHARGERS SCORE

COLTS OUTSCORE CHARGERS IN PRESEASON OPENER

A number of Chargers key players sat out their preseason opener as they fell to the Colts 45-32. The offense played well but the defense struggled and looked lost at times with a number of players cycling through.

The Good
Rookie QB Jared Barrett was 9/11 for 86 yards and a score.

Austin Ekeler picked up 82 yards on 10 touches.

Rookie TE Shakim Blade caught 7 passes for 57 yards and a score.

Melvin Gordon ran for 33 yards on the Chargers first offensive play then sat.

Tayvon Austin caught three passes for 42 yards and looked comfortable in a number of different positions.

The Bad

Jacoby Brissett went 18/19 for 175 and a touchdown.

Nyheim Hines picked up 100 yards and a score on just 10 carries.

The offensive line gave up six sacks.

The Ugly

Cardale Jones was 4/10, he did manage 78 yards and a score but was injured and did not return to the game.
