Chasing The Dream - The Career Of Chase Porter

A third 'chise? Why? How? As many of you know I have a young child and not a ton of gaming time. That being said I just couldn't shake the idea of another player 'chise. I went back and forth between this and an NCAA 14 dynasty. The dynasty won out but this idea was still there. Obviously with three projects to work on updates will get spread out but I'll try to give each equal attention. This one is much less labor intensive and many updates can be done away from the Xbox.

I've laid out a rough timeline, something I haven't done in previous player careers so that should help keep things on track.

We'll start out roughly present day and there will be a number of flashbacks mixed in.

I'll try to keep us up to date on what is going on with other teams and player but ultimately this is about Chase, the people around him and his experiences.

Redskins QB Colt McCoy fractures right fibula; Mark Sanchez in

Dec 5, 2018
John Keim
ESPN Staff Writer

PHILADELPHIA -- The Washington Redskins lost another quarterback. They lost another game, too. And a season that started to look promising a month ago now appears headed for a tough finish.

Redskins quarterback Colt McCoy broke his right fibula Monday in a 28-13 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles, ending his season in only his second start this year. He's also the second Redskins starting quarterback to suffer such a fate. Alex Smith broke his fibula and tibia in Week 11.

"This is a tough blow," Redskins coach Jay Gruden said. "Losing Alex was one thing. He was a great leader, great quarterback. Then Colt finally gets his opportunity and he gets kicked in the leg and breaks it. I'm heartbroken for both of those guys."

That means the 6-6 Redskins must try to stay in the playoff race with Mark Sanchez, who was signed on Nov. 19 and replaced McCoy on Monday. The Redskins now have a 23.8 percent chance to make the playoffs, according to ESPN's Football Power Index. They're tied with Philadelphia for second in the NFC East, a game behind Dallas.

They'll also have to sign another quarterback to back up McCoy. Two weeks ago, before signing Sanchez, they also worked out T.J. Yates, EJ Manuel, Josh Johnson, Chase Porter and Kellen Clemens. Porter reportedly had the best workout of the group. Sanchez was signed because of his familiarity with some of the coaching staff.

"I don't know what to say," Redskins running back Chris Thompson said. "It's unfortunate. I don't know what it is. It's just ... man, I honestly don't know what to say. To lose two quarterbacks in one year, I've never seen anything like it. It's just tough."

McCoy got hurt on the final play of the first quarter when he was tackled and his leg whipped around, hitting safety Malcolm Jenkins. But McCoy stayed in to finish the final two plays of the series, completing two passes for 15 yards. He appeared to be in anguish on the sideline, trying to walk off the injury. He then was escorted to the locker room. He did not need to go to a hospital, so he was in the locker room for the rest of the game.

It's a crushing end to the season for McCoy, who attempted just 11 passes between the start of 2015 through Week 10 this season, playing behind Kirk Cousins and then Smith. The Redskins believed McCoy could still lead an effective offense because of his experience: He was in his fifth year of Gruden's system. His teammates liked him for his leadership.

But injuries have highlighted McCoy's career. He started four games in 2014 for Washington, but an injured neck sidelined him for the final two games. He also missed the final three games of 2011 with Cleveland after suffering a concussion.

Before leaving Monday, McCoy had completed all four of his throws for 50 yards, leading a field goal drive. After the game, teammates looked deflated in the locker room, a second straight season derailed by injuries.

"I don't know, man, it sucks," left tackle Trent Williams said. "I mean it's hard to describe. You worry about the person more than the football player, but we all out here putting it on the line. When you see one of your fellow comrades go down, it really hurts."

McCoy's injury left Sanchez as Washington's only quarterback. The Redskins signed Sanchez after starter Alex Smith broke his leg in Week 11 and was lost for the season. Sanchez had not played in a game since the Dallas Cowboys' 2016 season finale, in which he completed 9 of 17 passes for 85 yards and two interceptions in a 27-13 loss to the Eagles. Monday, Sanchez completed 13 of 21 passes for 100 yards. He led a two-minute drive that resulted in a field goal before halftime. But he threw for just 38 yards in the second half.

"There's no excuses," Sanchez said. "To be totally honest, nobody cares. Nobody cares. You're charged with a job. You get paid to play this game. You get paid to go win. That's what people expect."

The Redskins signed Sanchez in part because Kevin O'Connell, their passing game coordinator/quarterbacks coach, and offensive coordinator Matt Cavanaugh both were with Sanchez with the New York Jets. O'Connell, a former Jets quarterback, played with him and actually called the plays when Sanchez was in the game Monday, having put together a few packages for him. Sanchez had not practiced with Washington until this past week. In fact, Gruden said afterward, they had more plays for their third-string quarterback (Kevin Hogan) in the first preseason game than they had for Sanchez on Monday. They had a wristband for Sanchez.

"We tried to get him comfortable," Gruden said.

That was difficult at times. He's throwing to receivers he barely knows and hasn't worked with. McCoy had familiarity with this group, which is why Washington felt OK about a final push. Sanchez does not have that with this group. He did receive a number of "we're behind you" talks from teammates after the game.

The Redskins also liked that he was 4-2 in playoff games, giving him experience in tense situations. The final four games now qualify as tense, as Washington remains alive for the playoffs but perhaps in name only, since Redskins have lost four of their past five games. They host the New York Giants on Sunday.

"I've seen just about everything in this league, except for a Super Bowl," Sanchez said. "With this group and these coaches, we'll be able to handle anything. You can't think on Tuesday. We've got to beat the Giants."

12/6/18

She watched as Chase reached to answer his phone, something he rarely did when they were having family time.

Chase stood up and walked into the kitchen.

"Must be important." She whispered to her daughter, who had looked up from her book.

"Hey Mike, what's up?" He answered.

Chase was deep in thought as he listened to the person on the other end of the phone.

He smirked then spoke.

"I've got half a mind to tell them to fuck off..."

She cleared her throat and motioned toward their daughter.

"Sorry!" He mouthed.

"What's the offer?" He asked.

"Well..." He trailed off.

"What do you think? What's the outlook after this season."

Chase rubbed his scruffy chin while he listened to Mike.

"Well..." He paused and looked to be in deep thought again.

"Washington?" She whisper yelled.

Chase nodded.

She gave him a thumbs up.

"Let's do it." Chase replied, sounding less than ecstatic.

"Cool, see you then." He answered after listening for a few moments.

"Thanks Mike." Chase hung up and plopped back down on the floor.

"So?" She asked.

"Washington, Mike tried to get next year too but it's just for the rest of the season."

"It gets your foot in the door. And it's not a long commitment so if you hate it there's always Calgary again."

"Yeah..." Chase nodded.

He turned his attention back to their daughter and her book and smiled before kissing her and then his wife.

Chase Porter Dismissed From Football Team After Incident Involving Sanchez, Sarkisian

While details of the incident are still limited it has been announced that Trojans quarterback Chase Porter has been dismissed from the football team following an incident of some sort that involved him, fellow quarterback Mark Sanchez and coach Steve Sarkisian.

Sources close to the incident have described it as a physical altercation but not a fight.

The Trojans are preparing to face Illinois in the Rose Bowl on January 1st.

Porter was listed as the third or fourth quarterback at times throughout this season. He has not appeared in a game for the Trojans yet after red-shirting in 2006.

Sanchez is the team's backup quarterback behind senior John David Booty. He is expected to be the starter next year.

No discipline for Sanchez or Sarkisian has been announced at this time.

We will update this story as details become available.

Mission Viejo Rolls Over Hart, 50-20
November 27, 2004|Eric Sondheimer;Peter Yoon;Mayar Zokaei
High Schools | FOOTBALL ROUNDUP

Leaving little doubt as to its talent and superiority, unbeaten Mission Viejo overcame a shaky start to overwhelm Newhall Hart, 50-20, in a Southern Section Division II quarterfinal playoff game Friday night at College of the Canyons.

The top-seeded Diablos (12-0) rolled up 513 yards in total offense, led by junior running back Chane Moline, who gained 238 yards in 33 carries and scored three touchdowns.

"We couldn't tackle him," Hart Coach Mike Herrington said. "We were outmanned. When you're facing an Orange County all-star team, it's tough."

It was the fifth time this season the Diablos have scored 50 or more points and they avenged a 25-7 defeat to Hart in last year's Division II final. Mission Viejo's defense had three interceptions and limited Hart's junior quarterback Chase Porter to 139 yards passing.

The Diablos will play host to Upland (10-2), a 29-28 winner over fourth-seeded Canyon Country Canyon, in a semifinal next Saturday.

Hart (7-5) gave Mission Viejo some uncomfortable moments early on. On the Indians' second offensive play, Porter threw a pass behind the line of scrimmage to Ryan Wolfe, who fired a 59-yard touchdown pass to Evan Surratt.

Mission Viejo ran off 23 offensive plays in the first quarter to Hart's two, but the Diablos still trailed, 7-0.

Moline scored three second-quarter touchdowns on five-yard runs, Brett Alvarez caught a 10-yard touchdown pass and the Diablos' defense held Lyon to two yards passing in opening a 29-7 halftime lead.

Wolfe caught eight passes for 112 yards, breaking Hart's single-season receiving record with 93 catches. Mission Viejo quarterback Mark Sanchez rushed for 66 yards and completed 11 of 20 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns.

Taking Care of No. 1
Mission Viejo completes an unbeaten season by defeating Valencia, 49-21, for the Southern Section Division II championship.
December 12, 2004|Martin Henderson | Times Staff Writer

It was only appropriate. Mission Viejo took on the toughest competition it could find this season. Los Alamitos. Santa Ana Mater Dei. Long Beach Poly. Concord De La Salle.

By choice, the Diablos played four nonleague teams ranked in the top 10 in the state.

On Saturday at Angel Stadium, Mission Viejo's final opponent -- No. 7 Valencia -- came by assignment in the Southern Section Division II championship game.

Mission Viejo completed its perfect season in resounding fashion with a dominant performance in a 49-21 victory over Valencia, its third Division II title in four years.

Mission Viejo (14-0), which was unbeaten before losing last year's final to Newhall Hart, started the season at No. 1 in the Southland and will finish it No. 1 in the state. As for mythical titles, the Diablos are still No. 2 nationally in the Student Sports magazine ranking after Southlake (Texas) Carroll beat previously undefeated Lufkin, 37-30, in a state 5A Division II semifinal on Saturday at Baylor University.

"We definitely tried to come out and win big," said Moline, whose brother, Chase, is the only two-way starter for the Diablos. "We knew they couldn't go four quarters. They're small, we're smash-mouth."

The Vikings became another notch on the Diablos' belt, an 11th team among 14 opponents that they scored on with their first or second possession.

Any thoughts Valencia (12-2) had of an upset had to be distant midway through the second quarter. Mission Viejo had gone up, 21-0, and had yet to allow an opponent more than 21 points this season.

With too much balance for its opponents to handle this season, Mission Viejo struck by land and air Saturday. Mark Sanchez passed for a 53-yard touchdown, Chane Moline ran for three scores before halftime and finished with five touchdown runs, of one, three, 19, five and one yard.

By the time they finished -- the reserves officially took over with 7 minutes 3 seconds remaining -- the Diablo starters had piled up 431 yards and 49 points against a team whose only other loss was to Division III champion Sherman Oaks Notre Dame, 33-3.

Although Notre Dame was also a physical team, Valencia Coach Brian Stiman said there were other factors that played into that contest.

The only factor that played into this one was Mission Viejo. Sanchez completed 12 of 19 passes for 181 yards. Moline rushed 23 times for 115 yards. The defense finished with six sacks of Herrick, who passed for 350 yards, going over 4,000 in the season, and two touchdowns. He had 216 yards through three quarters and trailed, 42-7.

Garrett Rubio, Chris Holmesly and Will Taylor each intercepted a Herrick pass. The latter two set up touchdowns -- Holmesly's 52-yard return set up a three-yard drive that made it 21-0.

"The only way you can put it is they're an all-star team," Stiman said. "They're the best team I've seen in 24 years of coaching. We played Dana Hills, San Clemente ... teams from their league, and they didn't have any players like that.

"They're the best team in the state of California with all the best players."

The obvious question: Will the Diablos be as good next year?

"No," said Bret Johnson, assistant coach and son of Coach Bob Johnson. "But we'll be good."
