Porter leads 'Skins to big win, back into playoff hunt

QB CHASE PORTER TAKES A BIG HIT WHILE THROWING A TD PASS TO JAMISON CROWDER

After and ugly loss to the Jaguars last weekend had put the Redskins on the outside looking in for the postseason a dominant win yesterday over the Titans has them right back in the hunt.

Washington thumped the Titans by a score of 45-17 in Tennessee.

Chase Porter played very well, throwing for 305 yards and three scores on just 20 pass attempts, 14 of which he completed.

Chris Thompson put up a season high 131 yards and scored twice in the win. Porter added 71 yards rushing and a score.

Jamison Crowder and Josh Doctson each went over 100 yards receiving, Crowder with 150 and a score and Doctson with 101 and a pair of scores.

The win brings the 'Skins record to 8-7, tied with the Eagles, who they face next week with the division title on the line.

Dallas is now 7-8 and has been eliminated from the playoffs.

Seattle is 9-6 and has locked up a wild card position. If the Redskins lose and the Vikings win then the Eagles will win the NFC East and the Vikings will get the last wildcard spot, leaving the Redskins out of the playoffs.

"The best thing we can do is just win next week." Coach Gruden explained. "Then we don't need to be scoreboard watching and needing help."

The Redskins lost to the Eagles in week 13 in Philadelphia by a score of 13-28.

Porter's late game heroics put 'Skins in playoffs

PORTER BOWLS OVER A DEFENDER TO KEEP A FOURTH QUARTER DRIVE ALIVE

The Eagles' Carson Wentz connected with Nelson Agholor on a one yard touchdown pass with just under two minutes left to play in their big game against the Redskins on Sunday afternoon. Jake Elliott kicked the point after and the game was tied up at 17-17.

"Don't want to push too hard here." Ronde Barber commented on the Fox broadcast of the game as quarterback Chase Porter led out the Washington offense. "Play it safe. Play for overtime."

The Redskins had other plans.

In a back and forth game the 'Skins led 10-3 at halftime following a bizarre play that saw kicker Dustin Hopkins run for a touchdown on a botched field goal attempt just before halftime.

Wentz led a long drive then found Agholor for his first score to tie things back up late in the third quarter.

Porter put the Redskins back on top at the start of the fourth quarter with a three yard strike to Jordan Reed for a touchdown. Porter had kept the drive alive by running for a first down on third and seven on the previous play. He was met by Eagles' cornerback Sidney Jones and lowered his should to ensure the first down. Hopkins' kick put Washington up 17-10.

After the two teams exchanged punts Wentz capped a 14 play drive that took nearly seven minutes off the clock with the second touchdown pass to Agholor.

When Porter took the first snap of the possession the clock rolled from 1:54. Washington had one timeout left.

After a run by Chris Thompson Porter hit a quick out to Josh Doctson who got a first down at the 31 and got out of bounds to stop the clock at 1:01.

Following an incompletion Porter found Jamison Crowder on a slant for four yards then clocked the ball. On third and six Porter connected with Maurice Harris out to the 42 for a first down. Washington used their final timeout with 28 seconds left to play.

The Eagles blitzed hard on the next play and Porter looked to be in trouble before spinning out of a Nigel Bradham tackle attempt then ducking away from Michael Bennett before stepping up in the pocket and delivering a perfect pass to Jordan Reed down the right sideline. The pass hit Reed in stride and he sprinted into the endzone with three steps on Eagles' safety Avonte Maddox.

"Just an incredible play." Cornerback Josh Norman said of Porter's effort after the win. "When he rolled over Jones earlier we all got behind him big time. He's our guy."

The win gives the Redskins the NFC East title and a playoff berth. They will host Seattle in a Wildcard game next weekend.

yeah, not a ton of talent on this team really but a cohesive unit, we'll see how the match ups play out. Hosting Seattle to start and on paper and record wise they are the better team.

One of the questions Chase had for his agent before joining Washington was about the prospects of being on the team next season. We don't know his answer and we don't know Chase's reaction to that answer. I would suspect that Alex Smith will be back as the Redskins starter in 2019 (in the game at least) so we'll have to see if a spot as his backup, a shot on another team or the lure of another possible Grey Cup wins out.
