Hudspeth headed to South Carolina
Former ULL coach to replace Spurrier
By Chase Portella | Jan 2, 2014, 12:15pm EST

South Carolina and Mark Hudspeth announced earlier today that the former ULL coach has accepted the school's head coaching position.

Steve Spurrier retired last month.

Hudspeth led Louisiana to a 29-9 record in three seasons with the team, winning the New Orleans Bowl to cap each season. After a pair of 9-4 seasons in 2011 and 2012 they finished 10-3 last season and won the Sun Belt championship. It was the school's first conference championship since 1994 when they shared the Big West championship.

With the South Carolina job filled it should create a chain reaction as many thought that it was the best job available.

MEMO
From: Coach Porter Davis
To: Defensive Coaches
Re: Defensive Analysis

I've taken the time to evaluate the players on the defensive side of the ball throughout practices and the spring game. Here are my thoughts by position.

DEFENSIVE ENDS
47 Darrien Batiste 6'2" 250 SO-RS
33 Curtis Bolden 6'6" 254 FR
96 Courtney Miggins 6'5" 251 FR-RS
57 Chris Prater 6'5" 263 JR-RS
91 A.J. Jefferson 6'3" 280 SO-RS
93 Early Reid 6'2" 240 FR
52 Dominique Tovell 6'3" 248 JR-RS

Tovell has great speed off the edge and should be able to put some pressure on passers as our primary LE in four man fronts. Miggins is a solid rotational option there as well. Prater has the size and strength we want in a RE and he should do very well there. As with the left side we have a nice second option in Batiste. Bolden and Reid will redshirt and Jefferson is a transfer from Mississippi State who will have to sit out this season. Overall this is a good position but we could be in trouble if we have injuries here. Bolden or Reid would likely have to burn a redshirt in that case.

DEFENSIVE TACKLES
97 Jalen Fields 6'5" 282 SR-RS
99 Daniel Fritz 6'2" 296 FR
14 Justin Hamilton 6'3" 300 SR
9 Christian Ringo 6'1" 287 SR
98 Leonard Washington 6'0" 297 SO-RS

With Ringo and Hamilton starting this is one of our strongest positions. Ringo has good speed and agility for his size and Hamilton is a big time space eater that is very hard to move. Fields gives us great depth and is probably a starter at most schools in out conference. Fritz has come along nicely and would be able to step in if we had any injuries. Washington is an incoming transfer from Florida International and will likely help us immensely next season after he sits out 2014.

OUTSIDE LINEBACKERS
35 Boris Anyama 6'3" 221 SR-RS
36 Zach Bourque 6'0" 180 SR-RS
53 Sammy Douglas 6'3" 215 FR-RS
49 Derek Jackson 6'3" 230 FR
58 Tre'Maine Lightfoot 6'1" 230 SO-RS
42 Chad Polk 6'0" 229 JR
56 Christian Sager 6'0" 223 SR-RS

This is a position where redshirts and transfers have made us a bit thin numbers wise. Anyama, a former receiver, is a talented player with good speed, strength and tackling ability. He is a bit undersized but it doesn't seem to hurt him too badly. He is our main starting outside linebacker. The other will be a mix of Bourque and Sager. Lightfoot is decent as a reserve. Jackson will redshirt while Douglas, a transfer from TCU and Polk from North Texas sit out this season. With Anyama, Bourque and Sager all entering their senior seasons they will be a big part of the defense in 2015.

INSIDE LINEBACKERS
13 Chris Hill 5'11" 203 JR
38 Trae Johnson 6'1" 234 JR-RS
59 Jake Molbert 6'1" 227 SR(C)
54 George Williams 5'11" 227 SO

Lots of talent here as Molbert is one of the best in the conference and Hill isn't far behind. Williams and Johnson are above average backups. These guys will mix in with the outside linebackers in different personnel groups to help with depth there as well.

CORNERBACKS
19 Troy McCollum 6'1" 191 FR-RS
3 Jamal Rainey 5'11" 185 JR-RS
24 Sean Thomas 5'10" 187 SR-RS
7 Corey Trim 5'11" 192 SR
23 Tracy Walker 6'2" 182 FR-RS
12 Jevante Watson 5'10" 183 JR

An experienced group with good talent in Thomas and Watson who will be the primary starters. Rainey is solid as a nickel and Trim's speed and experience makes him a solid reserve or dime when needed in that capacity.

SAFETIES
5 Darius Barksdale 6'0" 201 SR-RS
4 Trevence Patt 6'0" 195 SR-RS
2 Simeon Thomas 6'3" 201 FR-RS
26 Cedrick Tillman 6'0" 205 JR-RS
27 T.J. Worthy 6'2" 201 JR-RS

Excellent talent here with Patt, Worthy and Barksdale all starter quality, experienced players. I envision them all playing at the same time frequently. Tillman is a good, experienced backup and Thomas has been a contributor on special teams who could fill in if needed.

OVERALL
We have a number of talented players on the defensive side of the ball and I expect this to be one of the better defenses in the conference. I am looking forward to utilizing a number of defensive formations and schemes so that will put pressure on us as a coaching staff to make sure that everyone knows a number of assignments and positions. This should be a fun season for us.
