Game Two

North Texas @ Arkansas

September 1st, 2018 12:00PM
Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium - Fayetteville, Arkansas
Last Three Meetings: 9/29/07 Ark 66-7, 9/20/03 Ark 31-7, 10/28/72 Ark 42-16
North Texas 2017: 2-10(1-7 CUSA)
Head Coach: Charlie Taafe 0-0 Career
Key Players (PFF Grade)
TE Jared Lindsey (85)
QB Brandon Bowling (84)
HB Robert Whitaker (82)

Outlook: Arkansas' defense played very well against Colorado State last week and the offense moved the ball and used up clock. North Texas is probably around the same talent level as CSU so Arkansas should have a good shot at this one if they don't beat themselves.

BRYAN BRANT GETS INTO THE ENDZONE AFTER CATCHING A PASS FROM D’ERIQ ROBINETTE
Arkansas once again leaned on their running game and a strong defensive showing as they took down North Texas by a score of 34-10 to improve to 2-0.

The Razorbacks ran for 212 yards, led by QB D’Eriq Robinette’s 105 and Marques Long’s 83, and held North Texas to 245 yards of total offense. They sacked North Texas QB Brandon Bowling six times and forced a trio of turnovers in the win.

Robinette was an efficient passer, completing eight of his 13 attempts for 93 yards with a touchdown and no turnovers.

“It might not be flashy enough for ESPN but we’re doing what it takes to win games.” Razorbacks head coach Porter Davis said following the game. “That’s what we’re focused on here.”

Arkansas scored first with Joey Christodoulou connecting on an 18 yard field goal to cap a long opening drive. North Texas would take the lead in the second on a four yard touchdown run by Robert Whitaker. The drive was fueled by a 28 yard pass from Bowling to junior WR Zach Dunn for a gain of 28. The completion came after Bowling looked to be going down for a sack. Whitaker also contributed a 34 yard run a few plays later before scoring on the tenth play of the drive.

After a pair of punts the Razorbacks took the lead for good midway through the second quarter when Long ran for a gain of 17 then Robinette connected with a wide open Bryan Brant for a 28 yard score on a play action.

Just before halftime Pernell Young picked off a Bowling heave in the endzone, ending a scoring threat.

The second half began much like the first ended, with sophomore defensive back Cam Anderson picking off a Bowling pass to end North Texas’ first possession.

Long capped the ensuing possession with a two yard touchdown run.

North Texas added a 26 yard Sampson field goal late in the third quarter to make it 17-10 Arkansas but it only took Arkansas three plays to extend the lead with Robinette scoring on a 25 yard run. Robinette fought through a pair of North Texas defenders inside the five yard line to finish the run.

North Texas’ only drive that posed a threat in the fourth quarter ended with Caesar Whitaker forcing a Bowling fumble and Lance Parker recovering it for Arkansas.

Long added a second touchdown on a drive that was helped immensely by a 51 yard Robinette run. Christodoulou punctuated the game with a late 19 yard field goal.

“Good team win. Clean game mostly. Good defense. Good running game. No turnovers. Pretty textbook.” Maya Collins answered, while studying a pair of tablets, when Porter Davis deferred to her for a postgame analysis.

“(Defensive assistant) Marquase (Lovings) called a really good game for the defense and it was another good one for Marcus (Arroyo, offensive coordinator) too.” Davis added, sure to deflect any credit to where he felt it belonged.

2018 Arkansas Football Game Preview
Game Three

Image@Image
0-1 | 2-0

Tulsa @ Arkansas

September 8th, 2018 10:00PM
Donald W. Reynolds Razorback Stadium - Fayetteville, Arkansas
Last Three Meetings: 11/3/12 Ark 19-15, 11/1/08 Ark 30-23, 9/6/03 Ark 45-13
Tulsa 2017: 4-8(3-5 American)
Head Coach: Noel Mazzone 4-8 @ Tulsa, 6-18 Career
Key Players (PFF Grade)
HB Nick Lawson (89)
FS Steve Bolden (85)
WR Ed Foster (82)
Outlook: Tulsa and Arkansas actually look to be pretty evenly matched. This is a game I could see going either way. Tulsa suffered a bad loss at Eastern Michigan last week and should be looking for a bounce back in Fayetteville. If Arkansas sticks to their formula of running the ball, using up clock, protecting the football and playing defense they should have success in this one.
