ROBINETTE SCORES A RUSHING TOUCHDOWN IN THE CAJUNS WIN OVER USF
Louisiana’s offense racked up 505 total yards and the defense held South Florida to just 225 total yards as the Cajuns improved to 6-1 overall with a 38-17 win in Lafayette.

South Florida managed just 11 first downs while Louisiana picked up 20. USF’s biggest offensive threats, QB Michael Davis (15/22 183Yds 1TD 1Int) and WR Ardarius Stewart (2Rec 61Yds 1TD) were mostly held in check. Stewart did add 166 yards in the return game, nearly scoring on a kick return.

After forcing USF to punt on their first possession Jordan McAlary led out the offense after the punt rolled out of bounds at the one yard line. The Cajuns were up to the task, putting together an 11 play, 99 yard drive and topped it off with a two yard touchdown run by Donatello Franz III. McAlary was 4/4 on the drive and also ran for 10 yards.

Stewart returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards to the ULL three yard line, setting up his offense for a game tying TD. It wasn’t met to be as Early Reid popped RB Rocky Watkins who coughed up the ball, allowing Tracy Walker to scoop it up.

The teams exchanged punts before the Cajuns increased their lead to 14-0 via a 25 yard McAlary to Justin Carter touchdown pass midway through the second quarter.

Jeffrey Yatkowski made it 17-0 with a 42 yard field goal late in the half.

USF was able to strike quickly before halftime with Davis connecting with Stewart on a 15 yard score with three seconds left before the break. A 46 yard Davis to Stewart pass set up the score.

Louisiana was able to extend their lead on their first possession of the second half when D’Eriq Robinette lined up at QB and ran in for an eight yard score. Robinette caught a 17 yard pass from McAlary on the previous play.

USF made it 24-10 with a 28 yard field goal by freshman kicker Tyler Lane.

Things got a bit nutty after that.

McAlary was picked off by USF sophomore CB Matt Johnson who returned it for a touchdown. On the next offensive play for Louisiana Johnson got McAlary again. On the next play Delmond Boudreaux took the ball back, picking off Davis on the right sideline.

Three plays later McAlary hooked up with Mikey Porter Sr for a 44 yard touchdown pass, putting Louisiana up 31-17 with under a minute left in the third quarter.

After stopping USF on fourth down to start the fourth quarter Louisiana extended their lead on a three yard TD run by Joeseph Hollins III.

Another fourth down stop allowed the Cajuns to run out the clock and close out a 38-17 win.

McAlary threw for 408 with a pair of TDs and a pair of picks in the win. Seth Palmero (4/95) and Mikey Porter Sr (5/82/1TD) were the top receivers.

The running game was split up between Franz III (6/31/1TD), Robinette (7/27/1TD) and Hollins III (5/27/1TD).

“Nice, complete game. All phases and whatnot. A few big plays we gave up and a couple turnovers but good game overall.” Porter Davis said following the Cajuns win.

Cajuns sign five more
By Bill Connelly

The Cajuns signed five more recruits coming off their win over USF.

Isaac Loper FS #7 *** 6’0” 192 West Chester, PA Bayard Rustin
-Loper is strong. Good tackler with big pop. Not great in man coverage but does very well in zone. Can play deep or near the line. Needs to bulk up. Chases down plays very well. Can jam receivers at the line well. Had Rutgers a distant second.

Carl Baskin DE #55 *** 6’1” 237 Point Pleasant, NJ Point Pleasant
-Baskin has an explosive first step. Gets off blocks well. Good tackler. Good strength for his size. Could add muscle. Gets tired at the end of games.

Charles Branch G #53 *** 6’2” 319 Menominee, MI Menominee
-Branch is a great pass blocker. Needs to get stronger and improve as a run blocker. Very quick on his feet. Had Michigan 2nd.

Dylan Xavier WR #41 **** 6’1” 210 Douglasville, GA Douglas County
- Xavier is fast. Great top end speed. Solid route runner. Has trouble with drops at times. Chose Louisiana over Georgia Tech.

David Dosh CB #69 *** 6’0” 183 Richmond, VA Benedictine
- Dosh is a solid cover corner. Lacks in top end speed a bit. Solid tackler. Chose Louisiana over Virginia Tech.

ROBINETTE LOOKS TOWARD A SIDELINE CAMERA FOLLOWING HIS SECOND RUSHING TOUCHDOWN
Louisiana overcame a trio of turnovers along with the loss of QB Jordan McAlary to secure a 35-17 win over UCF in Florida.

McAlary threw a pair of first half picks and left the game with an undisclosed injury midway through the second quarter, turning things over to backup D'Eriq Robinette, who carried the Cajuns offense with 153 yards rushing and a pair of touchdowns while also throwing for 85 yards and two scores on eight of nine passing.

Defensively, the Cajuns held UCF to just 209 total yards and recorded seven sacks, including five by senior defensive end Courtney Miggins. The Knights also dealt with QB injuries, with all three playing in the game.

Robinette scored the first points of the game, a 49 yard touchdown run from a wildcat formation, midway through the first quarter.

Robinette's second rushing score came in the second quarter from 24 yards out.

A Hancock to King TD pass midway through the third quarter game UCF a 17-14 lead by Louisiana scored 21 unanswered points to close out the game.

"Just got to be ready to go when you get your number called." said Robinette when asked about his performance.

"D'Eriq brings a different aspect to the offense when he's under center. He's an x factor guy and he bailed us out today." Coach Porter Davis said after the game.

McAlary's status is still unknown and will be updated early next week.

Cajuns land four star athlete
By Bill Connelly

Image

Jeremiah Baker ATH #29 **** 6'1” 291 Fort Carson, Colorado Cañon City
-Baker nearly committed immediately following his visit for the win over USF but decided to take a week. The week is up and Baker has signed. Baker only started playing football as a sophomore and is very raw and has yet to settle into a position. He has played offensive line, fullback and tight end on offense as well as defensive line and linebacker on defense while at Cañon City High School. He led the team in sacks last season. He is very strong and has a quick first step. He is a bit of a sloppy tackler but hits with force. He gets off blocks well both when pass rushing and against the run. He chases down plays well. Offensively Baker is an average blocker who could be turned into an interior offensive linesman. He could possibly fit as a run blocking fullback or tight end but does not project as a ball carrier or receiver. I suspect we will see him in the front seven of the defense eventually. Baker was also pursued by TCU, Virginia Tech and Clemson.
---
Along with the signing the Cajuns have elected to stop pursuing the following player:
Damon Scott DT #92 *** 5'11” 259 Pampa, TX – Looks like the staff sees Baker as a defensive linesman, hence pulling the plug on Scott. Scott reportedly has Kansas State as his second choice.
