LINEBACKER CHRIS HILL SCORES ON AN EARLY PICK SIX
"You could tell by the end of the first that they all givin' up." Louisiana senior defensive end Dominique Tovell said after the game. The final play of the first quarter was a sack by Tovell with the Cajuns already up 21-0.
Louisiana jumped out to an early lead by way of an eight yard Kyle Hicks touchdown run to cap their first possession. Just under a minute after that linebacker Chris Hill picked off a tipped pass inches from the ground and returned it 55 yards for a score. New Mexico State sophomore quarterback King Davis would end up throwing five interceptions before the end of the game.
Later in the first quarter Hicks slipped out of a tackle near the line of scrimmage and went the rest of the way untouched for a 70 yard score and a 21-0 Louisiana lead.
Things didn't get any better for the Aggies in the second quarter with the Cajuns piling on three more scores.
First was a six yard touchdown run by senior runningback Effrem Reed followed by a 19 yard Brooks Haack pass to Adam Savoie that Savoie turned into a touchdown by dragging NMSU safety Tre Wilcoxen into the endzone.
Following an interception by sophomore corner Troy McCollum Brooks Haack hit a wide open Mikey Porter Sr. for an 88 yard score that made it 42-0 before halftime.
Louisiana took their foot off the gas in the second half but added a third quarter touchdown run by Montrel Carter and a pick six by McCollum late in the fourth quarter.
McCollum's late score drew a chorus of boos from both of the NMSU fans that were still at the game.
"Defensive guys don't get that many shots at the endzone so I'd never expect one of them to pass up an opportunity for six regardless of the score." Porter Davis said after the game. "Like last week I've got no issue with that, might have had one if he'd run out of bounds or something."
NMSU was held to 185 total yards with -3 on the ground while Louisiana rolled up 515 with 294 of them on the ground.
Haack was 8 for 8 passing and the team ran the ball 36 times.
"We just take what they'll give us." Davis said when asked if he was protecting Haack by leaning on the run. "If we're able to dominate the game on the ground and Brooks can make some big throws then that's what we're going to do. If we need Brooks to win us a game with his arm then he'll do it, utmost confidence."
Louisiana will have a very short week of prep as they prepare to host Georgia State in a Wednesday afternoon game.
