Jets sign veteran safety Eric Berry

ERIC BERRY DURING HIS TIME WITH THE CHIEFS

The Jets announced shortly after their loss to the Giants that they have agreed to terms with 30 year old safety Eric Berry. Berry played for the chiefs since 2010, recording 448 tackles and 14 interceptions in 89 games played. After missing most of the 2014 season to get treated for cancer Berry triumphantly returned in 2015 and played all 16 games, made the Pro Bowl and was named an All-Pro.

Berry missed all but three games in 2017 and 2018 due to injuries after signing a six year extension with the Chiefs in February of 2017.

"Just very excited for the opportunity and can't wait to get back on the field." Berry said when asked about the signing.

The deal is one year only and could be worth $5.5 million if incentives for playing time and production are met.

"He's a game changer." Coach Portega said of Berry. "Without the injuries we could be talking about a Hall of Famer. We're extremely excited about getting him on board and we're looking forward to deploying him, Jamal, Marcus, Rontez and all of those guys in a number of different ways. It should be very exciting."

Berry Tweeted that he will wear #39 with the Jets as #29 is currently taken by Bilal Powell.

Yup Darnold struggled. Should have scored off that early pick.

Adams' Pair of Pick Sixes Secure Win for Jets

Image
JAMAL ADAMS SCORES ON HIS FIRST OF TWO PICK SIXES

The Jets have been playing with using Jamal Adams in a number of different positions on defense after having secured the services of Eric Berry last week. Due to the changes Adams was still on the field for fourth quarter, primarily playing as a linebacker.

The move paid of as Adams picked off a pair of Matt Schaub passes in the final 1:09 of the game and returned them both for touchdowns, 82 and 90 yards respectively.

"Just great ball awareness as we've been seeing all along." Coach Dave Portega explained when asked about Adams' ability to make big plays even in a somewhat new position. "That's going to allow us a lot of creativity on defense this season."

The Jets got a trio of touchdown passes from Davis Webb, who found Deontay Burnett for a 57 yard score on a pass that was tipped in the third quarter. Webb then connected with tight end Daniel Brown for 17 and three yard scores in the fourth quarter.

Sam Darnold connected with Robby Anderson for a five yard score in the first quarter.

Darnold had a much more successful outing this week, going 8/12 for 84 yards and the score. Webb took over after Trevor Siemian went 2/5 for 6 yards to start the second half.

Bilal Powell led the team with 16 yards on four carries and Trenton Cannon picked up 11 yards on three carries.

Daniel Brown led the team with seven receptions for 109 yards and two scores. Burnett racked up 86 yards and a score on his three receptions.

Brent Qvale game up the only sack the Jets allowed.

Aside from Jamal Adams' stellar defensive performance C.J. Mosely recorded 9 total tackles and a half sack. Marcus Maye had six tackles. Leonard Williams had 1.5 sacks and Folorunso Fatuski, Brandon Copeland and Jachai Polite each added a sack.

Taylor Bertolet missed his first extra point attempt but hit the other three while getting touchbacks on five of his six kickoffs.

Matt Darr punted once for a total of 66 yards.

Ty Montgomery returned one kick for 27 yards while Tim White got 47 yards on his two returns. Montgomery returned one punt for nine yards and Jamison Crowder returned one for ten yards.

Siemian Picks Sink Jets

The Jets defense held the high powered Saints to 19 points and kept them out of the endzone until the fourth quarter when Teddy Bridgewater connected with receiver Lil Jordan Humphrey for a 17 yard score.

New Orleans kicker Wil Lutz added four field goals.

Offensively the Jets moved the ball well when Sam Darnold and Davis Webb were on the field but stalled when Siemian took over in the fourth quarter.

Darnold finished the first half 12/17 for 112 yards with no turnovers. Webb went 5/6 for 96 yards and a score to tight end Daniel Brown.

Siemian was just 4/12 for 46 yards with two picks.

The Jets ran the ball only seven times during the game with Ty Montgomery picking up 14 yards on his three carries to lead the way. Trenton Cannon also carried three times but ended up with 0 yards. Bilal Powell had one five yard carry.

On the receiving front it was once again the Daniel Brown show. Brown came into the game leading the league in receiving yardage and will likely retain that lead after catching six passes for 117 yards and a score. Brown caught a short pass and took it 72 yards on Davis Webb's first pass. After Brown was Robby Anderson who caught four passes for 26 yards. Deontay Burnett caught two passes for thirty yards.

Brandon Shell, Jonotthan Harrison, Tom Compton and Kelvin Beachum each gave up a sack.

Defensively for the Jets it was a big day for Brian Poole who recorded eight tackles and a pair of sacks. C.J. Mosley also recorded eight tackles. Brandon Copeland recorded a sack and a half and Jamal Adams picked up the other half.

Taylor Bertolet was 2/2 on field goals and connected on his lone extra point attempt. Matt Darr handled punting duties and averaged 52 yards on three punts, 37 net. Tim White and Ty Montgomery each returned a kick, gaining 23 and 22 yards respectively. Jamison Crowder returned a punt five yards while Montgomery got four on his try.

The Jets are 1-2 now and will wrap up their preseason at home against the Eagles in a game that should feature all the fringe roster players.

53 Man Roster Prediction

As the Jets get ready to host the Eagles in their final preseason game we're taking a look at the roster and making a prediction for the first 53 man roster which the team will have to finalize on Saturday.

QB
Darnold, Siemian, Webb
Webb has outplayed Siemian so far this preseason but Siemian is the more experienced player and the Jets will keep them both
3/53

RB
Bell, Montgomery, Powell, McGuire, Wesco (FB)
The top three are obvious, it gets a but murky after that but McGuire is the most experienced of the rest.
8/53

WR
Anderson, Crowder, Enunwa, Bellamy, Thompson, Burnett
Again, clear at the top, murky after Bellamy. Burnett, White, Dortch and Jones are all practice squad eligible.
14/53

TE
Herndon, Griffin, Brown, Tomlinson
Looks like the Jets will keep all four here. Brown has had an incredible preseason so far and Tomlinson is the best blocker.
18/53

OL
Beachum, Osemele, Kalil, Winters, Shell, Egoda, Lewis, Harrison
26/53

DL
L. Williams, Anderson, Shepherd, Polite, Q. Williams, McLendon, Basham, Fatukasi
A bit thin numbers wise but this looks like the group.
34/53

LB
Williamson, Mosley, Copeland, Jenkins, Cashman, ?
They'll probably keep six and the sixth may be decided against the Eagles
40/53

CB
Johnson, Poole, Roberts, Nickerson, Austin
Pretty straight forward here.
45/53

S
Adams, Maye, Berry, Middleton, Miles
Again pretty clear here, a deep group that will help with the thin LB group.
50/53

ST
Hennessey (LS), Bertolet (K), Edwards/Darr(P)
Edwards against Darr has been close, probably decided after the Eagles game.
53/53

That's what we predict, the top 40 or so is pretty clear at this point but there could certainly be some movement at the bottom of the roster as those players see a lot of playing time in this final preseason game.

Jets complete a pair of trades

The Jets have shipped out a pair of players ahead of their final preseason game against the Eagles.

Offensive tackle Brandon Shell, who had been the starting right tackle, has been sent to Cincinnati in exchange for a 2020 4th round pick. The Bengals have apparently given up on Bobby Hart.

The team will apparently turn the position over to rookie Chuma Edoga, who was a third round pick this year.

Receiver Deonte Thompson was also shipped out, heading west to the Chargers in exchange for 6th and 7th round picks in 2021.

Thompson had not separated himself from younger players around him on the depth chart and the move allows the team to keep a younger player with more upside.

The Chargers were in need of depth at the position following an injury to Keenan Allen.

The Jets now have 73 players on the roster and will need to cut down to 53 Saturday afternoon.

Hope to get a lot out of him. 1500 and 800 maybe? 15 touchdowns.

Not sure what to expect, haven't used him much at all. Hope the line can open holes, made some changes that will hopefully help.

Want to keep pressure off Darnold so Bell and the defense need to ball out.
