Jones, Bandy named All-Americans as Miami looks forward to LSU
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Kevin Jones' decision to come to Miami is lookin like a great one. The true freshman linebacker swept the awards, winning the Butkus, Bednarik and Nagurski Trophy while teammates Jaelan Philips and Trajan Bandy won the Lombardi and Thorpe awards, respectively.

Jones was also a first-team All-American as was Bandy along with guard Navaughn Donaldson and safety Bubba Bolden. On the second team were Hurricanes safety Gurvan Hall Jr. and kick returner Brett Sharp.

Sharp made the All-American Freshmen team as a returner along with Jones at linebacker and fellow running back Randy Battle.

Netsa Silvera was All-ACC first team along with Donaldson, Jones, Bandy, Bolden and Sharp. On the second team was tight end Brevin Jordan, Phillips, guard D.J. Scaife Jr, linebacker Sam Brooks, cornerback D.J. Ivey, punter Louis Hedley and Hall Jr.

Chick-fil-A Bowl Preview :: LSU vs. Miami Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Miami came into the season wanting to play in the ACC Championship Game and end their season in a New Year's Six Bowl and if everything went right, potentially the national championship.

Another ten-win season and making a return to the recruiting hot bed that is Atlanta to play in the Chick-fil-A Bowl against a premier SEC team like LSU isn't a bad backup option.

The teams last played in Dallas in a game where Miami got dominated by the Tigers en-route to Mark Richt's final season at Miami before he retired.

LSU's season came crashing down when they lost three of their last four games, including a 24-14 loss to 5-7 Ole Miss. The Tigers are looking to salvage a season that started with a 7-1 record with wins over No. 7 Mississippi State.

Miami caps off successful season with bowl win
Miami was really excited when they landed five-star running back Brett Sharp around this time last year.

Miami's excitement has turned into production with Sharp scoring five touchdowns in the last eight quarters of football, including a 67-yard punt return touchdown as Miami went on to beat LSU 31-12 in the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

Sharp made LSU's world-class athletes look slow and lethargic in his punt return for a touchdown, just minutes after he made it to the endzone on an option pitch. Sharp cut across the entire field before summersaulting into the endzone, showing the flair he's brought to Miami.

Scoring Summary

2:43 (MIA) M. Harley, 29 Yd pass from T. Williams
0:57 (LSU) C. Culp, 47 Yd FG

‣ Diaz receives extension

Miami confirmed on Monday that head coach Manny Diaz received a seven-year extension.

The extension has been rumored and reported on for the past several weeks leading up to the bowl game. The extension kept Diaz away from potential suitors such as Oklahoma State, South Carolina and Kentucky.

‣ Pritchard hired by Nevada

Miami offensive coordinator Tavita Pritchard has been hired by Nevada to be their next head coach following the firing of head coach Jay Norvell.

Pritchard returns to the West Coast and becomes one of college football's youngest coaches at 33 years old. Pritchard was at Miami for a single season after leaving Stanford last season. Despite losing his starting quarterback in Jarren Williams, Pritchard was able to put together a reputable offense with a true freshman at quarterback and a battered offensive line.

Potential replacements that have been rumored include former Wake Forest head coach Dave Clawson, UNLV offensive coordinator Kevin McGiven and former Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith.

Miami hires former Oregon State head coach to be OC
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Miami fans wish to run a more spread offense has been answered.

Following Tavita Pritchard's departure to be the head coach at Nevada, Manny Diaz hired former Oregon State head coach Jonathan Smith.

Smith, who was fired at Oregon State after going 1-11, was hired over Auburn offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham and fired Oklahoma State head coach Mike Gundy. Wake Forest's Dave Clawson was rumored to be in the mix.

Smith, 42, was previously the co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Washington Huskies. He arrived in Seattle in 2014 as part of the staff of new head coach Chris Petersen. As a player, he was a four-year starter at quarterback at Oregon State in Corvallis.

Smith was previously the quarterbacks coach for two seasons at Boise State, also under Petersen, and the offensive coordinator for two seasons at Montana. He was the quarterbacks coach for six seasons (2004–2009) at Idaho under three head coaches: Nick Holt, Dennis Erickson, and Robb Akey. Prior to his tenure with the Vandals in Moscow, Smith was a graduate assistant at his alma mater in 2002 and 2003 under Erickson and Mike Riley.

This marks the fourth offensive play caller in Miami in as many years.

Notable Coaching Changes
Wake Forest: Willie Fritz replaces Dave Clawson.
-----
Rutgers: Rick Skrosky replaces Chris Ash.
-----
Oklahoma State: Mike Sanford replaces Mike Gundy.
Texas Tech: Bill Bendebaugh replaces Mike Wells.
-----
Oregon State: James Coley replaces Jonathan Smith.
-----
Kentucky: Dan Lanning replaces Mark Stoops.
South Carolina: Tom Kaufman replaces Will Muschamp.
Vanderbilt: Derrick Jackson replaces Derek Mason.

Miami struggles during National Signing Day
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Miami had six players on their board last season heading into National Signing Day and they landed all six of them. This time around, the Hurricanes were waiting for LOIs from seven different players and only one of them came in, three-star defensive end Lamar Washington.

JUCO star Jason Dunn committed to New Mexico, three-star tackles Melvin Reyes and Christian Perry went to USC and South Carolina respectively while running backs Derek Thompson and Matt Gray went to TCU and SMU.

Miami ended the day with the 36th ranked recruiting class, a fall from their previous class which was second in the nation.

Top-ranked quarterback Jim Crenshaw was ruled academically ineligible, ending Miami's hail marry attempts.

2021 Miami Hurricanes football preview: Williams ready to take next step under new OC Smith
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Tyrone Williams' stock was extremely high coming out of spring camp last season with many people within the program feeling that he had the best arm talent within the quarterback room. His stock kept rising even after the shaky fourth quarter performance against Florida State but it all came crashing down against Virginia Tech.

Williams finished the season strong and now has a new OC in Jonathan Smith who projects to a run a more spread out offense better suitable for Williams' skill.

A look at Miami’s quarterback situation:

Projected depth chart
#11 Tyrone Williams, So.
#5 N'Kosi Perry, RS-Sr.
#18 Tate Martell, RS-Sr.
#13 John Harrison, Jr.

Expected starter: Williams will be the starter, Diaz said as much.

Major storyline: Tate Martell returns to the position although he will also moonlight as a backup receiver. Both Martell and JUCO transfer John Harrison bring some mobility to the position so it will be interesting to see what Miami does with them, if anything.
