UAB at Miami Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Miami was still a really young team last season so when they faltered against Georgia Tech and then Virginia Tech, it was expected. An 11-2 season was something to be proud of, even if they failed to make it to Charlotte or a BCS Bowl.

This time around, expectations are raised in Coral Gables and everyone knows it.

Manny Diaz has brought the program back to consistent heights it hasn't been at since the late 90s and early 2000s with many predicting Miami to compete for a national championship, as shown by their number eight preseason rankings.

The Hurricanes can't achieve all of their goals with a win over UAB but they can get started on the right track in what many see as a showcase game before the Hurricanes hit the road against fierce competition.

Miami rips apart UAB in a 59-3 season opening victory
Miami scored just three points in the first quarter against UAB with quarterback Tyrone Williams throwing an interception that led to the Dragons tying the game.

Just how Manny Diaz wanted it.

Miami overcame the brief adversity, scoring 56 unanswered points in the beat down of the Dragons on Saturday as the Hurricanes opened their season with a 59-3 win.

Newly hired offensive coordinator Jonathan Smith got creative in the second half, having both Brett Sharp and Sean Johnson throw a pass which led to a 20-yard pass and for Johnson a touchdown to Sharp on a jet sweep before Johnson flicked it back to Sharp who took the snap at wildcat.

Miami at Michigan State Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Scoring 59 points against UAB at home was fun for the Miami Hurricanes. But for Miami, their season starts this week when they travel to East Lansing to take on Michigan State in the back half of a home-and-home series.

Last year, on a rainy afternoon in South Florida, the then undefeated Hurricanes displayed their toughness behind a tough defense and a punishing running game in their 35-23 win over Michigan State.

The top rusher for that game, Cam'ron Harris? Gone. The second leading rusher, Lorenzo Lingard? Gone. The top three pass catches? Gone. The starter at quarterback? Gone.

Miami will deploy an almost entirely new team this time around when they face a veteran Sparty squad.

Miami takes care of Michigan State in road victory
Michigan State opened the second half with a quick touchdown strike on the very first play from scrimmage.

The Spartans offense had started to get into a groove before the end of the half, putting Miami's defense back against the wall with their quick passing game. Manny Diaz, in return, challenged its defense.

They responded by forcing four turnovers in the second half and surrendering zero points after that touchdown in Miami's 34-10 win over Michigan State on a packed Saturday night in East Lansing.

The Hurricanes were able to quickly subdue the crowd with a touchdown on the first drive and Miami's defense did the rest, holding the Spartans to just two redzone trips for the entire game, one which resulted in an interception right before the end of the second quarter.

Miami vs. Alabama Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Manny Diaz did not mince words during his press availability this week.

"If we want a seat at the big boy table," said Diaz, "You have to beat the big boy teams. What have we done? We haven't won a conference championship, we haven't made one since 2017. We haven't won a BCS bowl, we haven't sniffed a national championship so yeah, we should be overlooked and that should motivate our guys to play their ass off on Saturday.

Miami (No. 5 AP, 2-0) got a 'medium-boy' win last week against Michigan State, dominating nearly all facets of the game but when they come into Atlanta to play the Crimson Tide, it's a whole different beast.

Mac Jones is not Tua Tagavailoa but he's no slouch either and any notion that the Tide offense would take a big drop following Tua's exit is wrong. Alabama (No. 2 AP, 3-0) is averaging 44 points per game and their passing offense is ranked 34th in the country and they feature a top 25 rushing attack even with the loss of Najee Harris to the draft.

Jones has eleven touchdowns already on the season while Trey Sanders is averaging 170.7 yards per game, more than the entire Miami team. Miami does have the #1 rushing defense and fifth ranked total defense.

Alabama Schedule
vs. South Carolina: W 56-17
vs. Wisconsin: W 31-3
at Vanderbilt: W 45-21
