‣ Three-star local LB Matt Pittman commits to Hurricanes

Miami has had the same three starters -- Michael Pinckney, Shaq Quarterman and Zach McCloud -- at linebacker for the last four seasons. With all of them set to graduate after this season, they got some much needed reinforcements in three-star South Dade linebacker Matt Pittman.

Pittman, the 52nd ranked inside linebacker according to 247, had offers from Kansas, Alabama, Marshall and Oklahoma State. At six-foot-one and 235 pound, Pittman is best described as a thumper and will likely be a depth and special teams contributor his first few seasons.

Miami is still pursuing the eleventh ranked inside linebacker in the class in Ohio's Donovan Smith. Smith, a four-star recruit, is set to be on campus this week. Miami will love to pair him with #1 OLB Kevin Jones and #2 OLB Scott Wade, both still uncommitted.

Kansas is considered the team to beat with Wade, a local product out of Tamiami, and Miami holds the pole position for Jones.

‣ Dallas, Quarterman among semi-finalists

The semi-finalists for several awards were released today and running back Deejay Dallas was among a few Hurricanes to make the list.

Dallas, with 789 rushing yards and thirteen touchdowns on the year, was a semi-finalist for the Maxwell, Walter Camp and Walker Trophy. Shaquille Quarterman (58 tackles, 5 sacks) and Amari Carter (42 tackles, interception) were finalist for the Bednarik.

Quarterman was also a finalist for the Nagurski and Butkus Award while Carter was among the twelve players for the Thorpe.

Brevin Jordan made the cut for the Mackey and Jeff Thomas for the Randy Moss Trophy.

Duke vs. Miami Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Head coach Manny Diaz said that several of his young players -- including freshman quarterback Jarren Williams -- earned their stripes over the last three weeks against Florida State and on the road against Virginia and Boston College. Nevertheless, Diaz welcomes being back home for their matchup against 3-5 Duke in what will be their final home game before the season finale against Pittsburgh.

"I think the guys are thankful," said Diaz, "We're not getting on a plane this week, we're playing in front of our friends so I think they have to take pride in getting ready for this game and not look ahead."

Miami has plenty of reasons to look ahead. Their end of month matchup with Virginia Tech in Blacksburg will likely decide their season and whether or not they face rival Florida State or Clemson -- who has blown them out in the last two meetings -- and end the first season under head coach Manny Diaz as a success.

But Duke still stands in their way, a Due team desperate to be bowl eligible. The Blue Devils will need to finish 3-1 at worse in order to make it to a bowl game and they still have a trip to Clemson before season's end.

The drop-off at quarterback has been significant for Duke. Exit first-round pick Daniel Jones and enter senior Quentin Harris who has eleven interceptions on the season and just four touchdowns. Williams, for Miami, threw three touchdowns in last week's game.

Duke has a respectable ground game in Deon Jackson and Brittain Brown as well as Harris, who Diaz says "can make things happen with his legs." Duke's rushing attack is still ranked in the 100s -- 104th to be exact -- and so are the rest of their offensive rankings, averaging just nineteen points per game.

This is setting up to be a showcase game for Miami as they host five-stars HB Brett Sharpe and QB Tyrone Williams. Five-star athlete Eddie Clark is also expected to be in attendance.

Miami dominates Duke, Williams throws four touchdowns in blowout win
Miami's strength of schedule -- or rather lack thereof -- has been the subject of many debates as to why Miami, with a win over top-ten Florida State and a sole loss to top-three Florida, is only ranked 20th in the latest BCS rankings.

"We play who is in front of us and we try to dominate," said Miami head coach Manny Diaz.

Dominate they did on Saturday, shutting down Duke for three quarters and scoring 49 points as the Hurricanes routed the Blue Devils 49-10. Before a field goal in the third quarter, Miami's defense had scored just as many points, 7, as the Duke offense.

Duke was unable to get anything going and Quentin Harris was running for his life all game, rushing for 90 yards in the losing effort. The senior quarterback was the only Duke players with over 50 yards. Meanwhile, Miami's Jarren Williams threw for 342, Deejay Dallas rushed for 102 and Jeff Thomas had 162 yards receiving and two touchdowns.

Tight end Brevin Jordan also had two touchdowns and five catches for 65 yards.

Scoring Summary

Georgia Tech vs. Miami Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Georgia Tech (1-8, 0-6) has lost eight straight, Miami has won eight straight. The Yellow Jackets are without quarterback Tobias Oliver and top defensive player safety Juanyeh Thomas. The Hurricanes quarterback Jarren Williams is coming off arguably the best game of his young career.

#17 Miami (8-1, 5-0) finds themselves on the complete opposite end of the spectrum of what Georgia Tech is going through under first year head coach Geoff Collins. The Yellow Jackets have no beaten an FBS team this season, losing last 38-7 to North Carolina. In their eight losses, they've scored over fifteen points just once and have five times been held under seven points. Georgia Tech's highest ranked unit? Their passing offense which is ranked 121st in the country with 122.8 yards per game. Jeff Thomas averages more total yards than their entire offense.

"We're struggling," said an honest Collins, who knows that his team desperately needs a win.

It's a rebuild year for the Yellow Jackets and this is a showcase game for Miami as they get ready to play Virginia Tech next week. With a win this week, Miami can set themselves up to clinch the Coastal next week should they beat Virginia Tech.
