2022 Miami Hurricanes football preview: Once a five-star recruit, Washington gets his opportunity
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Donald Washington could have went anywhere in the country and played quarterback at some of them. No one expected the California kid to have to wait until his junior season to be part of the rotation at corner but that is the case.

Miami lost four-year starters in D.J. Ivey and Al Blades and replacing them are a few highly touted recruits in Christian Williams and Washington. In the back end, they lost out on a few All-Americans in Bubba Bolden and Gurvan Hall graduating.

Projected depth chart
CB – #25 Donald Washington, Jr.. :: #23 Te'Cory Couch, Sr. :: #28 Andrew Woods, So.
S – #20 Tommy Green, Fr. OR #36 Kevin Whitlock, So. :: #30 E.J. Bryant, RS So.
S - #4 Keontra Smith, Sr. :: #8 Maurice Duncan, Fr.
Striker – #3 Gilbert Frierson, RS-Sr. :: #26 Brendan Rich, Fr.
CB - #24 Christian Williams, Sr. :: #7 Casey Watson, Fr.

Expected starters: It's a brand new looking defensive backfield returning just two contributors from last season in Williams and Frierson. Washington and Williams at corner on the outside with Couch as the nickel and Tommy Green splitting snaps with Kevin Whitlock and Keontra Smith at safety with Frierson back at striker.

Major storyline: Miami is really high on the true freshmen trio of Green, Rich and Duncan at safety. Expect Green to start at free safety and for Rich to get some playing time at striker with Duncan spelling Smith at the other safety spot.

After a magical season, the Hurricanes look to reload and storm once more behind talented offense
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

If things had gone a little differently in Atlanta, Miami would have ended the season having beaten four top-two teams. Instead, the Hurricanes are more than happy with slaying three dragons en-route to their first national championship since 2001.

Miami lost a lot to the draft, including it's entire secondary, it's best defensive tackle and the right side of its offensive line. Manny Diaz's staff has been recruiting at an elite level and with now a fully formed quarterback in Tyrone Williams and the addition of a new offensive coordinator in Neal Brown, Miami's ready once more.

Ten Best Miami Players
1. QB Tyrone Williams, Jr.
2. LB Kevin Jones, Jr.
3. DE Greg Rousseau, RS Sr.
4. CB Christian Williams, Sr.
5. DT Jason Blissett, Sr.
6. WR Eddie Clark, Jr.
7. HB Brett Sharp, Jr.

What to watch for on offense: Neal Brown's offense favors quarterbacks and with Williams having two seasons under his belt, the table is set for him to have a Heisman campaign of a junior season en route to the draft.

What to watch for on defense: Miami's new look secondary lost two All-Americans in Gurvan Hall and Bubba Bolden. Can they retool behind some talented but unproven players?

The team will be far better if... the defense doesn't drop off from last season. Miami lost a lot on defense, specifically the secondary. Bubba Bolden cleaned up a lot of things and with him gone along with Hall, Miami needs their young guys to keep this unit playing at an elite level.

The Schedule: Miami fans will known just how good this team is very quickly.

SMU is no push-over as an opener and they follow that up with road trips to Texas A&M and Washington. It is not inconceivable that Miami is 1-2 after that stretch.

It doesn't get easier after that with a home stand against Wake Forest and then three straight conference road games, including at No. 7 Florida State. The schedule eases up following that with a road trip against Virginia, a home stand against Duke, back on the road at Georgia Tech. Those are all games that Miami will be heavily favorites before they clash off against Virginia Tech for the third time in a calendar year.

Best offensive player: Williams. This is an easy answer after the season Williams put together but Eddie Clark might have something to say about this come season's end.

Best defensive player: LB Kevin Jones. The junior has swept the defensive awards his first two seasons and is poised for a third run at what has been an historic college career.

Key players to a successful season: Offensively, WR Sean Johnson. Former OC Jonathan Smith used Johnson in a variety of ways with the receiver having more rushing attempts than catches. Neal Brown's offense is more straight forward and they'll need Johnson to become more of a pure receiver alongside Clark.

Defensively, it's true freshman Tommy Green who is likely to get the nod at free safety. Miami runs a lot of single high and back there the last few seasons has been Gurvan Hall, a seasoned safety. With Hall gone, Miami is now putting that trust into a true freshman that was playing quarterback in high school a few months ago.

The season will be a success if...the Hurricanes win the ACC and finish in the top five. Asking for another national championship with a revamped secondary and half the offensive line gone is too much.

Key game: at Florida State. Miami beat Florida State twice last season but not at home.

big drop off to morris in speed, how's that going to effect the future game plan?
Not much. Jarren wasn't much faster than him and he has a good acceleration at 79.

better on offense, worse on defense.

The secondary is suspect and I respect Sam Howell @ UNC loss.

SMU at Miami Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Neal Brown is a descendant of the Mike Leach - Tony Franklin air raid scheme that took over college football at the start of the last decade. When Brown was fired at West Virginia, he had his pick of the litter when it came to his next job as an offensive coordinator.

When the Miami job came available, Brown jumped at the opportunity not because Miami was coming off a national championship but because of it's six-foot-one, 190 pound quarterback.

"He's got the most arm talent I've been around," said Brown of junior quarterback Tyrone Williams just a month into his stint at Coral Gables, "He's got the tools to be the best quarterback in the country. He's got the goods, dude."

Williams suffers injury in win over SMU
A gloomy morning turned into a rainy afternoon. Not the idea backdrop for the returning champions to make their return.

By the second quarter, the day got even gloomier.

Miami quarterback Tyrone Williams sprained his elbow in the second quarter and is expected to miss several weeks as Miami rolled on to beat SMU in their season opener 56-17 on Saturday.

Williams was tackled after he already threw a completion to Sean Johnson. Williams was slow to get up and left the field. True freshman quarterback Curtis Corbett came in at quarterback and threw an interception on his first pass attempt. Corbett would throw three more interceptions as he rotated with fellow true freshman Anthony Morris at quarterback.

Morris finished 12 of 14 for 196 yards and three touchdowns, the likely starter next week. Corbett also played some receiver while Williams was still in the game and while Morris was at quarterback, catching five passes for 48 yards.

Miami at Texas A&M Preview
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

It wasn't that long ago when Miami turned to a true freshman on short notice in arguably one of the biggest games of the Manny Diaz era. Out of that game, the legend of Tyrone Williams was born.

On Saturday, Anthony Morris gets his chance.

Diaz announced on Thursday that Morris will get the start against #13 Texas A&M in what promises to be a rocking Kyle Allen Field as the true freshman will make his first career start. Morris threw for 196 yards and three touchdowns last week against SMU when Williams went down with an injury.

Miami OC Neal Brown stated that freshman quarterback/receiver Curtis Corbett 'will be involved' in the game plan.
