2020 Miami Hurricanes football preview: How much money is Brevin Jordan going to make in this offense?
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

If running back wasn't so talented, tight ends would probably be UM's most loaded position group.

Brevin Jordan is an all-word talent and is poised to have probably his biggest year in Tavita Pritchard's offense. Miami is also high on Will Mallory who has looked good in practices and camps but is still quietly waiting for his turn behind Brevin but Miami has some real studs waiting in line in Hodges and Wilson, two guys that are big, strong and can run.

A look at Miami’s tight end situation:

Projected depth chart
#9 Brevin Jordan, Jr.
#85 Will Mallory, Jr.
#87 Michael Irvin II, RS-Sr.
#81 Larry Hodges, So.
#82 Antonio Wilson, Fr.

Expected starters: Miami likes Mallory -- a lot -- but Brevin will still be far and away TE1. Coming into last season, it seem that Brevin and Mallory were interchangeable but heading into both of their junior season, it's Brevin's spot.

Major storyline: Can Mallory make an impact as TE2? It's not secret that Miami likes him and think the world of him as a receiver but can he finally make that jump from being a really talented tight end to being a really productive tight end to the point that he's taking snaps away from some of Miami's secondary receivers.

2020 Miami Hurricanes football preview: Can OL step up?
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Miami's weakness for the better part of a decade has been its offensive line and this year is no different. The good news is that Miami returns nearly everyone on the offensive line and all of the starters from last year's unit that struggled at times against elite competition like Florida and Auburn.

A look at Miami’s offensive line situation:

Projected depth chart
LT – #60 Zion Nelson, Fr. :: #77 Adam El-Gammal, RS-Fr.
LG – #55 Navaughn Donaldson, Sr. :: #76 Ousman Traore, RS-So.
C – #65 Cory Gaynor, RS Jr. :: #53 Jakai Clark, So.
RG – #51 D.J. Scaife Jr., Jr. :: #52 Cleveland Reed Jr., RS-So.
RT – #57 Kai-Leon Herbert, RS-Jr. :: #74 John Campbell Jr., RS-So.

Expected starters: The only change from last year is Kai-Leon Herbert getting the nod over John Campbell.

Major storyline: Donaldson got some great advice, coming back for his senior season. Donaldson should maul people during his last season and all of the hype he came to Miami with should finally pay off. It'll also be interesting to see how Tavita Pritchard's Stanford background affects Miami's recruiting.

2020 Miami Hurricanes football preview: Will the defensive line continue to produce despite losses?
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Miami's top pass rushers from last season -- Travon Hill and Scott Patchan -- are gone but somehow, Miami expects to have an ever bigger season on the edge. Jaelen Phillips, the UCLA transfer, is now eligible to play and Jonathan Garvin returned for a senior season. Add in young bucks Greg Rousseau, Jahfari Harvey and Cameron Williams, you have a talented rotation at defensive end and experience on the inside.

A look at Miami’s defensive line situation:

Projected depth chart
DE - #95 Jaelan Phillips, RS-So. :: #22 Cameron Williams, So.
DT – #1 Nesta-Jade Silvera, Jr. :: #96 Jonathan Ford, Sr.
DT – #92 Jason Blissett, So. :: #91 Jordan Miller, RS-So.
DE – #97 Jonathan Garvin, Sr. :: #15 Greg Rousseau, RS-So.

Expected starters: Phillips has looked good, really good after almost two years away from football. He's athletic enough to potentially cover should Miami ask him and the defense can get creative with him. Garvin is Garvin, one of the top defensive ends in the ACC if not the country and with Silvera in the middle, Miami figures to be stout. Expect a heavy rotation at that second tackle between Jonathan Ford, Blissett and Miller.

Major storyline: Will Garvin be able to put together a ten-sack, All-American level season? We saw flashes as a freshman from Garvin and he continued to impress as a sophomore but injuries slowed down his junior season. Garvin is the undisputed leader of this defense with the linebackers gone and now, can he step into that role and the be alpha?

2020 Miami Hurricanes football preview: How does Miami replace their legendary trio?
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

When you have three linebackers like Shaq Quarterman, Michael Pinckney and Zach McCloud as starters for four seasons, it's a blessing. The only problem? They never came off the field and Miami now has inexperienced linebackers expected to play major roles in a defense that was built around it's linebackers.

Miami is raving over true freshman Kevin Jones and Avery Huff has Pinckney-like instinct and speed but until they're on the field, we don't know.

Projected depth chart
SLB - #11 Kevin Jones, Fr. :: #17 Waymond Steed, RS-Jr. :: #6 Sam Brooks, So.
MLB – #9 Avery Huff, So. :: #44 Bradley Jennings Jr., RS-Jr. :: #52 Patrick Joyner Jr., RS-So.

Expected starters: Miami's deployed, typically, two linebackers in it's base look the last two seasons and with the trio gone, expect them to stay in that nickel look more and more. Jones is almost locked in as a starter despite being a true freshman and the team is high Huff, Jennings and Joyner.

Major storyline: How will the rotation at Mike linebacker work? Miami wants to play Avery Huff, Bradley Jennings and Patrick Joyner all significant snaps. Given the typical play-calling responsibilities, how will they be able to pull that off? Will they give the play-calling over to Kevin Jones, a true freshman?

2020 Miami Hurricanes football preview: Once a question mark, Miami's secondary looking to take next step
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

Coming into last season, many wondered and worried about the lack of depth Miami had in the secondary. Outside of Trajan Bandy, they were starting first-year starters at every other position and relying on true freshman corners -- Christian Williams and Te'Cory Couch -- as depth pieces.

Sophomores turn into juniors and freshmen into sophomores. Miami is experienced in their back five and have one of the better secondaries in the ACC.

Projected depth chart
CB – #2 Trajan Bandy, Sr. :: #8 D.J. Ivey, Jr. :: #20 E.J. Bryant, Fr.
S – #26 Gurvan Hall, Jr. :: #21 Bubba Bolden, Jr.
S – #5 Amari Carter, Sr. :: #4 Keontra Smith, So.
CB – #7 Al Blades Jr., Jr. :: #24 Christian Williams, So. :: #25 Donald Washington, Fr.
Striker – #3 Gilbert Frierson, RS-So.

Expected starters: Bandy, a four year starter, returns as the top corner with Ivey and Blades sharing snaps at CB2. Hall had an All-American year last season as a sophomore and should get the majority of the snaps at free safety although the team will use Bubba Bolden in a variety of ways. The only new first time starter is Frierson who played some last season, backing up Romeo Finley in the Striker position.

Major storyline: How does Miami use Bolden? He's probably their best athlete in the secondary and was used primarily as a deep safety last season on obvious passing downs. At six-foot-three and 200 pounds, expect Miami to use Bolden closer to the line of scrimmage, almost as an extra linebacker on running downs as well.

Manny Diaz brought Miami out of the ashes, can he take it to the skies?
Adriana Edwards - Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

It wasn't eighteen months ago that Miami had lost four straight games during the regular season, had an inept offense, had one of the game's most respected coaches quit on the team and had to hire, for the second time, a coach from Temple.

"We sort of reset ourselves last season," said Diaz during ACC media day, "Now we have to assert ourselves."

The smooth talking Diaz takes a group of young players from last year that managed to win eleven games and a bowl game over Auburn to now a team capable of winning the ACC -- something Miami has never done -- and potentially compete for a New Year's Six Bowl.

Ten Best Miami Players
1. DE Jonathan Garvin, Senior.
2. G Navaughn Donaldson, Senior.
3. CB Trajan Bandy, Senior.
4. TE Brevin Jordan, Junior
5. HB Cam'Ron Harris, Junior
6. S Gurvan Hall, Junior.
7. S Amari Carter, Senior.
8. QB Jarren Williams, Sophomore.
9. DT Nesta Jade Silvera, Junior.
10. OG D.J. Scaife Jr., Junior.

Sept. 6 vs. Rutgers
Sept. 13 vs. Temple
Sept. 20 at Louisville
Sept. 27 vs. #5 Michigan State
Oct. 4 vs. Boston College
Oct. 11 at #9 Florida State
Oct. 18 at #23 Virginia
Oct. 25 vs. Duke
Nov. 8 at Georgia Tech
Nov. 15 vs. #10 Virginia Tech
Nov. 22 at North Carolina
Nov. 29 vs. Pittsburgh

Preseason All-Americans
G Navaughn Donaldson, Senior
S Guvan Hall Jr., Junior
S Amari Carter, Senior

Preseason All-ACC
QB Jarren Williams, RS Sophomore
G D.J. Scaife Jr., Junior
TE Brevin Jordan, Junior
G Navaughn Donaldson, Senior
S Guvan Hall Jr., Junior
S Amari Carter, Senior

What to watch for on offense: How will Miami utilize it's bevy of talent at the running back position? Miami has two of the best running backs -- talent wise -- in the conference with the duo of Cam'Ron Harris and Lorenzo Lingard but they are unproven. Behind them is Brett Sharp, Randy Battle and Kirk Banks, all highly recruited freshman that bring something to the table.

What to watch for on defense: Miami lost three starters at linebacker in Shaq Quarterman, Michael Pinckney and Zach McCloud. Miami plans to use a platoon of players for their linebackers. Will this strategy work and can freshman Kevin Jones be the next great Miami linebacker?

The team will be far better if... they can limit their turnovers. Jarren Williams threw eighteen interceptions last season and if they can bring that total to under ten for this season, Miami can easily beat the tougher teams in their schedule.

The Schedule: We will know very early how good this Miami team is.

Rutgers, Temple and Louisville are all great measuring stick games as Miami should be, by a good margin, better than those teams. And then there's the Michigan State game against a preseason top five team. We saw Miami last year lose to Florida and then rally to almost win out the rest of their games.

After Michigan State, Miami plays its toughest games on the schedule which is at Florida State and at Virginia in back-to-back weeks. After that, it's a lull except for a home game against Virginia Tech.

Best offensive player: TE Brevin Jordan. He's arguably the best tight end in the country, it's either him or Oklahoma's Grant Calcaterra. He's physical, tough to bring down and Miami will go to him early and often in their biggest games.

Best defensive player: DE Jonathan Garvin. He's gone under the radar the past few seasons but expect a big year out of Garvin this season as Miami perhaps tightens their defensive end rotation and lets Garvin play some heavy minutes.

Key players to a successful season: Jarren Williams is the easy answer here but going to go with Mark Pope. A former top recruit, he's yet to put together any sort of dominant performances and is pretty close to being a bust of a recruit but with Jeff Thomas and K.J. Osborn gone, if Pope can become a dominant WR1 option for Williams, Miami's offense will keep on clicking.

Defensively, it's linebacker Kevin Jones. Shaq Quarterman cleaned up so many things last season for the defense and with him gone, Jones is going to have to be that clean up guy and we'll see if he's able to do so as a true freshman.

The season will be a success if...the Hurricanes win the coastal, play Clemson and/or Florida State tough in the conference championship game and compete for a top tier bowl.

Key game: Michigan State. With a win, Miami can go into the Florida State perhaps in the top-ten and a chance to get back in that top five.
