‣ Inside the Miami recruiting board as official visits begin
Miami will host its first sets of visitors this season in two-star tight end Tommy Smith and four-star athlete Quincy Anderson. The Hurricanes are in a battle with Mississippi State for Anderson, who many experts pick as the leader. Smith is a juco product which Miami will attempt to get to commit during his visit
Miami is considered to be in second place in both races.
Let's take our first look at the board
Quarterbacks
#1 ATH Tommy Green :: Bixby, OK :: OU, TEX, TAMU, NEB, MIA
#8 QB Anthony Morris :: Miami, FL :: MIA, TEX, OU, BAY, UNC
#12 ATH Curtis Corbett :: Miami, FL :: MIA, KU, FSU
#17 ATH Deshawn Swain :: Miami, FL :: MIA, AKR, OHIO, WKU, UF
Even with Tyrone Williams turning things around, Miami needs to nail this position in this cycle. In two years, Williams will be gone and if he has a solid junior season next season, he might be on his way out in less than 18 months.
Morris is a near lock for Miami with Texas and OU being distant second and third places. Miami's pursuit of Corbett and Swain aren't helping the matter but in either case, Miami's in pole position for all three of them. Corbett is the one to watch with his speed and arm talent in what is an unusual deep talent pool at the position for South Florida.
The wildcard is Tommy Green, the top player in the country. Miami's "monitoring" the situation after he de-committed from Oklahoma last year and remains in the open market. Miami's chances aren't great but there is a chance.
Running back
#10 ATH R.J. Olson :: Miami, FL :: MIA, KU
#12 HB John Andrews :: New Iberia, LA :: MIA, STAN, VT, OU, ALA
Similar to Morris, Andrews is all Miami at this point. Miami, however, cannot afford a repeat of the Kevin Sanders situation last season where the four-star tight end felt slighted by the lack of attention and bolted to Notre Dame.
Olson is the top ranked player in the state and Miami wants the five-star athlete badly. Kansas, however, can offer Olson something Miami cannot: early playing time.
Wide Receiver
#9 WR Dusty Simpson :: Robinson, TX :: NMSU, MIA
Kenneth Kent and Sean Johnson give Miami two cornerstones at the position and they will anchor it for the next three to four years with Justin Sarria providing much needed depth not to mention Eddie Clark. Even with Wiggins gone next season, Miami is okay at the position and should sign one -- maybe two -- receiver and they'll be fine.
Simpson was a long-time New Mexico State commit before an impressive junior season earned him a third and eventually fourth star once the summer was over with. Miami's making ground and while Simpson has remained loyal to his original commitment, once they get him on campus for what will be a star-studded weekend against Florida State, he might flip.
Tight End
#5 TE Tyler Walker :: Miami, FL :: MARSH, MIA
#88 TE Tommy Smith :: Olympia Heights, FL :: MIA, UF, LSU, ASU, WISC (juco)
Smith is a solid commit that Miami expects to commit this weekend or in the near future. Walker, on the other hand, is likely going to be a long recruiting battle as he's scheduled to visit Marshall in December after his visit to Miami. Miami will love to be able to lock him down during that Florida State visit. He also has visits to Duke and Clemson before his Miami visit so he's poachable.
Offensive Line
#9 G Mark Sapp :: Oklahoma City, OK :: MIA, OU
#16 G Manny Curtis :: Bartow, FL :: MIA, ALA, UF, SCAR
#20 T Kevin Charles :: Wekiva Springs, FL :: MIA, BAY
#39 C Dustin Kendrick :: Leisure City, FL :: MIA, UF
Miami is firmly in the lead for both Sapp and Curtis. Curtis is a nice, developmental prospect but Sapp is one of the top targets of this cycle. Getting a four-star, ready-made offensive lineman right from the hands of Oklahoma will be a huge win for both the football team and the recruiting brand for Miami on the national scene.
Miami swung and miss at the position last season so getting Charles is a must. At six-foot-five and 309 pounds, Charles has played well above his three-star status. With visits set to Miami and Baylor, it's a two team battle with Miami in the lead.
Florida and UCF are making some progress with Kendrick, the JUCO product, but Miami is in a good position with him.
Defensive Line
#9 DE Kyle Diggs :: Miami, FL :: UF, FSU, MIA, OLE MISS
#16 DT Tyler Fernandez :: Miami, FL :: MIA, FSU, UF
Miami went 1-of-4 at the position last year, losing Corey Grant to Florida and Evan Pierce to Florida State, two blue-chip prospects. It's looking like deja-vu with Kyle Diggs who has Florida and Florida State ahead of Miami right now.
The Gators stole some players from Miami last season and revenge is a dish best served cold as Miami will be hosting Diggs a few weeks before he visits Florida. The Hurricanes need to pull a Gator move and make sure he never makes it to that visit.
Linebackers
#2 OLB Jeff Utley :: North Marysville, WA :: NEB, OSU, UGA, ALA, MIA
Miami's in the Utley race and if they fail, they might have a problem at their hands as they didn't sign any linebackers last cycle. I expect them to add some to their board down the line.
Defensive backs
#2 FS Brendan Rich :: Crestwood, MO :: MIA, KSU
#2 SS Kevin Kiniry :: Naples, FL :: LSU, MIA, MISS ST
#3 SS Maurice Duncan :: Jacksonville Beach, FL :: MIA, UCF, FIU
#3 CB Casey Watson :: Harlingen, TX :: MIA, OU, STAN
#26 ATH Quincy Anderson :: Haines City, TX :: MISS ST, MIA
Miami is going after some elite, elite prospects at the defensive back position, specifically at safety.
Duncan is in commit watch right now although he does have visits set to UCF, FIU and Florida although the Gators are looking like a long shot at this point. Kiniry is also on commit watch on the other side after a recent visit to LSU. Duncan might be incentivized to lock down his spot as the safety in this class and perhaps keep Kiniry away. With Rich, Miami is trying to flip him from his commitment to Kansas State, which he committed to during his freshman season.
Miami's in a good place with Watson although given his location, OU is always a threat for a late surge.
