Rehabbing Antonio Brown will be Bill Belichick's biggest challenge yet
ESPN.com

FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick has taken notable chances on uber-talented, "troubled" star players in the past, and Antonio Brown now shoots to the top of the list.

Running back Corey Dillon in 2004. Randy Moss in 2007. Albert Haynesworth in 2011. Josh Gordon in 2018.

The Belichick-led Patriots have often been a team with which players viewed as malcontents -- or in the case of Gordon have battled larger forces such as substance abuse -- can revive their careers and reputations.

Belichick has been able to take such risks because, in his 20th year as head coach, a football-first, team-centric, disciplined culture has been a foundation to the franchise's success. There has annually been a strong core of veteran leaders in the locker room, led by quarterback Tom Brady. And Belichick's iron fist, with the authority to hire and fire, usually plays a major role in keeping players in line.

In Brown, Belichick has taken on arguably his biggest challenge.

Dillon and Moss had fallen out of favor with the Cincinnati Bengals and Oakland Raiders, respectively, before they arrived in New England. They were fierce competitors who had grown tired of losing, and they craved the chance to win a Super Bowl. Because of this, they both initially fell into line quickly and later would talk about how they appreciated being able to blend into the team, instead of always being singled out as the star.

Dillon rewarded the Patriots with a franchise single-season record 1,635 rushing yards in 2004 en route to a Super Bowl XXXIX championship.

Moss, of course, dazzled in his first season in New England, with 98 receptions for 1,493 yards and an NFL-record 23 touchdown catches. The Patriots went 16-0 in the regular season, before losing in Super Bowl XLII.

Taking a chance on both Dillon and Moss paid off big time.

The same couldn't be said of Haynesworth, whose heart never truly seemed to be in it, and he was released after six games. He is an example of a Belichick gamble that didn't pay off.

Now, with Brown, it will be compelling to see the result of two powerful forces colliding: The Patriots' team-first, no-nonsense culture vs. Brown's actions that often come across as self-centered and entitled.

Taping a conversation with Belichick and posting it on social media, as Brown recently did with Raiders coach Jon Gruden, likely would lead to immediate discipline that could be as severe as Brown being released. So, can Brown suppress his ego in those situations?

The Patriots' investment of a $9 million signing bonus as part of Brown's contract -- which is significant -- shows Belichick believes there's a good chance it can work.

If it does, the possibilities for on-field fireworks are intriguing, similar to what Moss brought in 2007.

Moss (three times) and Rob Gronkowski (five times) are the only players to record double-digit touchdown receptions for the Patriots since 2001. Brown has recorded double-digit touchdowns in four of his past five seasons, including a league-leading 15 in 2018.

Brown is a downfield threat unlike any other since Moss. Since 2011, Brown has totaled 204 receptions and 33 touchdowns on throws of at least 15 yards downfield. Over that same span, Brady has completed 44.5% of his passes thrown at least 15 yards downfield.

One thing Belichick often says is when a player comes to New England, he does so with a fresh start. It's a blank slate. In his Instagram post in which he showed himself pictured with a Patriots jersey, Brown referred to the situation this way: #RewriteStory.

It was fitting because perhaps more than any other team in the NFL, the Patriots have helped players rewrite their career stories in emphatic fashion.

Brady starts his 20th season by beating Steelers 33-3
FOXBOROUGH, Mass. -- The New England Patriots trolled the Pittsburgh Steelers on Saturday and then blew them out Sunday night.

A day after the acquiring former Steelers malcontent Antonio Brown, the reigning Super Bowl champions showed they might not even need him, getting 386 yards and four touchdown passes from 42-year-old Tom Brady to beat Pittsburgh 31-12.

"Well, he's the best in the world," Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger said. "There's a reason he's the best when he's out there doing his thing."

Julian Edelman caught three touchdown passes, including a 46-yard score, and Josh Gordon -- another receiver who wore out his welcome elsewhere -- caught seven passes for 100 yards. On the night New England unveiled its sixth NFL championship banner, Super Bowl MVP Edelman had eleven catches for 147 yards.

No one has won back-to-back NFL titles since New England did it in 2003 and `04.

"We were so locked in on the moment. We were locked in because we knew of the expectations," defensive back Duron Harmon said. "We knew that when we had the opportunity to play the Steelers, on opening night, with the banner raising, we were going to do everything possible to prepare the right way."

Facing the last team to beat them, back in Week 15 last year, the Patriots opened a 14-0 lead before Pittsburgh kicked a field goal on fourth-and-goal from the 1 with 10:28 left in the second quarter.

Roethlisberger completed 25 of 44 passes for 328 yards and an interception, though 116 of the yards came on non-scoring drives in the fourth quarter with the Steelers trailing. The offense showed the effects of losing two of its biggest playmakers: Brown, who talked and tweeted his way out of both Pittsburgh and Oakland in one offseason, and running back Le'Veon Bell, a two-time All-Pro who sat out all of last season to avoid a franchise tag.

In their place, James Conner gained 47 yards on 15 carries; the Steelers gained only 42 yards rushing in all. Top receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster caught six passes for 189 yards, 26 of it coming on one throw in the final six minutes with the Steelers already trailing.

"We got our butts whooped," defensive tackle Cameron Heyward said.

New England Patriots at Miami Dolphins Preview
DynastySports.com

It took him a while but Antonio Brown has a new home, a new team but the same old number.

The receiver was able to secure number 84 from tight end Benjamin Watson, currently serving a four-game suspension. According to Brown, Watson was "taken care of real good" in order for Brown to keep the number he's worn on the way to seven pro bowls.

Enough with the games, now. It's time to play football. Brown will suit up for the Patriots on Sunday when they visit Miami, Brown's hometown ironically, in what will be his Patriot debut.

"I'm ready to go," said Brown, "I'm ready to play some football."

It's not often that Tom Brady and Bill Belichick take a backdrop to the storyline ahead of a game, yet alone a game against divisional rival Miami that is led by first-year head coach and former New England assistant Brian Flores.

The Dolphins found themselves on the news often in the last few weeks, similarly to Brown, but for different reasons as they gutted their roster. The strength of their team remains their secondary where Brown will likely match-up against Xavien Howard. It's slim pickings after as Flores will need to find a way to not only guard Brown but also Josh Gordon, Julian Edelman and Demaryius Thomas with the likes of Eric Rowe and Johnson Bademosi, two former Patriots that their fair share of struggles in coverage.
