AFC Conference Championship: Kansas City Chiefs at New England Patriots Preview
DynastySports.com

The New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs last met on a chilly night in November where New England had arguably it's best performance after dropping two straight games to the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans. Patrick Mahomes threw three interceptions and his worst game of the season, a game that might have ultimately cost him his second straight MVP.

He'll be looking for revenge.

Mahomes is 0-3 against New England, losing to them last year as well in the AFC Championship Game but a win on Sunday would send the superstar to his first Super Bowl and in a way, cement himself as the league's next alpha quarterback. In just his second season as a starter, Mahomes threw for 4,557 yards and 43 touchdowns to bring his career total to 93 touchdowns in just two seasons. Despite playing in as many as fifty less games, Mahomes has more touchdowns than quarterbacks such as Marcus Mariota, Jared Goff and Carson Wentz.

A luxury that Mahomes will have on Sunday that he didn't in December is receiver Tyreek Hill. Without Hill, New England was able to press the Kansas City receivers on the outside with man-to-man coverage and then deployed a trail defender -- safety Patrick Chung -- on tight end Travis Kelce. Kelce is out for the season with a broken ankle but tight end Deon Yelder has proven to be effective, catching nine passes last week in the overtime win against the Browns.

With Hill likely forcing New England to play two safeties over the top, Yelder could be poised for a big game as well as receiver Sammy Watkins. Watkins had three touchdowns last week, including the game winner in overtime. During their week 14 match up, Watkins caught eight passes for 123 yards and a touchdown against New England. It remains to be seen what mix up of coverage and personnel Bill Belichick will deploy against a very explosive Chiefs offense.

The biggest injury of the game might not be all-pro Kelce but rather cornerback Kendall Fuller who is out with a ruptured disk. Fuller's injury pushes second-year man Tremon Smith out of Central Akansas into the lineup. While there are veterans such as Tyrann Mathieu, Mo Claiborne and Bashaud Breeland in the secondary, Kansas City will now be trotting out a secondary with a rookie starting safety in Juan Thornhill and the aforementioned Smith who figures to get plenty of burns against New England and Tom Brady.

Smith is most fluid corner out of Breeland and Clairborne and figures to get the match up on Edelman. With Fuller on Edelman the last time these two played, Edelman had five catches for 71 yards and a touchdown. Trent Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts had eleven catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns against Kansas City in the wild card round. Smith fared better the next week against Jarvis Landry, limiting him to just four catches.

New England does not and should not expect to hold Kansas City to seven points again. However, New England's defense has proven this season that its capable of shutting offenses out for a quarter and sometimes an entire half. If Kansas City gets off to a slow start offensively, it just might be enough of a wiggle room for New England's offense to get going and then play keep away.

Patriots make fourth straight Super Bowl, overcome early struggles against Chiefs
It's the dead of winter, meaning the weather in New England can be brutal. And that the Patriots are headed to the Super Bowl.

It took an unlikely hero to get there -- for the fourth straight year. While the folks back home dealt with a frigid storm, New England's defense kept making play after play late in the game in a 49-30 victory Sunday for the AFC championship.

Tom Brady threw an interception on the team's first drive and Kansas City jumped out to an early lead before the Patriot settled down, scoring the last two touchdowns of the half. New England had a chance to extend their 21-17 lead with the ball to open the second half but went three-and-out. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs were driving when an unlikely hero appeared.

After catching a screen pass from Mahomes, running back Damien Williams made a defender miss just as Collins got his hand on the football and ripped it out. In the same motion, Collins picked the ball up and returned it 54 yards for the touchdown, arguably the game's biggest play. Collins would have another interception in the fourth to help thwart Kansas City's come back efforts.

It’s been three seasons since the ultra-athletic linebacker suited up with the Patriots. After being released by the Cleveland Browns this offseason, it took Collins two months to find a new home. With a fresh start in Foxboro, the seven-year veteran is once again making the most of his opportunities with the Patriots.

“Jamie’s a very special player,” head coach Bill Belichick said. “He’s very smart, instinctive. He’s got a great nose for the ball in the passing game and in the running game. He’s got the physical skills to play at the end of the line and off the line, to blitz, to play in coverage, play against the run and play against the pass. ... He’s added a lot to us.”

What’s always made Collins special is his athletic ability for someone who is 6 feet 3 inches tall and weighs 255 pounds. When he first joined the Patriots, as a second-round pick in 2013, he would wow his teammates by performing backflips on the practice field. That athleticism allows the coaching staff to play Collins all over the defense.

Awaiting them in Miami are the Carolina Panthers, who won 17-10 in Green Bay for the NFC championship. The Panthers (12-7) made the Super Bowl in 2003, losing to the Patriots, and in 2015 where they lost to the Denver Broncos.

New England benefited from two critical defensive touchdowns and made its tenth Super Bowl with Brady at quarterback and Bill Belichick as coach.

They made one a little recently, fam.

Otherwise, solid job making it to the Super Bowl. Defense came up huge.

Super Bowl: Carolina Panthers vs. New England Patriots Preview
DynastySports.com

Sixteen years and one day to the date, a 26-year old Tom Brady would earn his second Super Bowl ring and the first of back-to-back championships. He would go on to win six Super Bowls in total, a feat that is equally incredible and ridiculous for the former sixth-round pick.

Cam Newton was a sophomore for Westlake High School in Atlanta, Georgia. The next year, he passed for 2,500 yards and 23 touchdowns and ran for 638 yards and nine touchdowns, gaining the attention of major college programs. In his senior year, Newton was rated a five-star prospect by Rivals.com, the No. 2 dual-threat quarterback in the nation, and the 14th quarterback and 28th player overall. Newton would go on to win the Heisman, a national championship, become a number one overall draft pick, win the league MVP before losing on this state, five years ago.

A lot has transpired since the New England Patriots and the Carolina Panthers faced off in Super Bowl XXXVIII. Some good -- okay, a lot of good for New England -- and some bad for both sides. The architect of the 2003 Carolina Panthers, Marty Hurney, was fired after a 1-5 start in 2012. Many of the best players on the 2015 Panthers team that won the NFC Championship were drafted by Hurney, including Newton and linebackers Luke Kuechly and Thomas Davis. Hurney is back with the team now and has once again built a team that finds themselves in their third Super Bowl wishing that the third time is the charm.

The Panthers are an unlikely foe for the Patriots, who many picked to win the Super Bowl as soon as the confetti fell on them last February. Carolina, on the other hand, were seen as perhaps the second or even third best team in their own division. They started the season 1-3 before a 4-1 finish helped sneak them into the playoffs largely in part due to Tampa Bay crashing towards the end due to an injury to starting quarterback Jameis Winston.

Once they got in, Carolina took care of Tampa in the wild card round, eeking out a 17-14 win over the Blaine Gabbert-led Buccaneers. They then marched into Dallas and knocked off the top seeded Cowboys in an impressive eleven point win. Newton threw for two touchdowns, ran for one while the Panthers defense made Dak Prescott -- who shredded the Patriots secondary -- look pedestrian. If that wasn't enough, Carolina went into Green Bay, in the elements and beat the Packers 17-10 despite not having star running back Christian McCaffrey to win the NFC Championship.

McCaffrey will be back in the starting lineup when they face off against New England in Miami. The Patriots' defense were ranked fourth in rush defense during the regular season but have looked vulnerable against elite running backs. When he wasn't fumbling, Kansas City's Damien Williams even got some big runs against New England's front seven. McCaffrey's versatility will present some problems for New England's front as they must go big enough to stop the inside runs while also being able to cover McCaffrey out in space.

Newton presents a similar trouble due to his ability to run the ball. Lamar Jackson rushed for 62 yards against New England while Deshaun Watson had a touchdown run when Houston defeated the Patriots. New England loves playing man coverage which in turns has defenders with their backs to the quarterback. Given that Newton is a willing and able runner, this could come some issues for the Patriots if he gets loose.

Carolina's speed at receiver is also a potential issue. While Carolina lacks a true number one which will demand the attention of all-pro corner Stephon Gilmore, they have a multitude of speedy receivers that can do some damage with the ball in their hands in Curtis Samuel, D.J. Moore and even Jarius Wright. Furthermore, New England has struggled when it comes to covering tight ends and Greg Olsen's one of the best in the league. Olsen has 58 catches for 553 yards and seven touchdowns.

Carolina will have just as much trouble slowing down New England's offense. Eric Reid and Tre Boston are more box safeties than cover safeties as they do a good job of providing run support. Brady didn't throw for a ton of yards against Kansas City in the AFC Championship Game but when he did, he was able to beat Kansas City both inside with the quick passing game to Julian Edelman or over the top to N'Keal Harry. Against the Chiefs it was Harry but Josh Gordon and Phillip Dorsett II present just as much of a risk.

In a game with two explosive offenses, it stands to reason that whichever defense can make a few plays here or there -- turnovers and sacks -- will come away with the win.
