Skins Can't Get out of Their Own Way In Week 1

ESPN-The Skins looked exactly as they should have in week 1, a team with a rookie quarterback and a new head coach who had little time to implement his scheme. Penalties and mistakes were ample this week among the Redskins who were somehow able to stick with a very talented Eagles team.

To the question everyone is wondering, how did Haskins look? Well he looked like a rookie quarterback starting his first game against an excellent front seven with a mediocre offensive line in front of him. He was sacked four times and under constant pressure from the Eagles front seven. Brandon Graham and Fletcher Cox tallied all of the Eagles sacks on the day. Haskins made some nice throws, he also made some bad ones. Such as a poorly thrown ball down the left side of the field that found the hands of Rodney McLeod Jr. For reference McLeod is a seventh year safety for the Eagles. If McLeod played for the Skins he likely would have dropped the ball since that illness is apparently going around in Washington. Haskins had to deal with constant drops from his receivers, including a perfectly placed touch pass in the endzone to Jordan Reed. Glad to have you back Jordan.

Elsewhere Derrius Guice found little room to run behind the Redskins offensive line, which is where he found himself a lot of the time. He was still able to muster 55 yards on 15 carries and one touchdown.

The Redskins defense looked better than the offense for what that's worth; let me tell ya, not a lot. While the defensive line looked solid, the secondary was lost for the majority of the game trying to find Philadelphia receivers. The inside linebacking crew made very few plays in the run game...Reuben Foster, save us. Rookie Montez Sweat was guilty of multiple roughing the passer penalties, he also had two sacks on the day so I suppose that balances it out in some weird way. It's clear Josh Norman probably needs to move to safety while DRC should have a date with the retirement committee soon.

The Redskine will look to right the ship as they head home to face the Cowboys next week.

New Week, Same Mistakes

Image

ESPN-”These guys have to help each other out.” Was the sentiment shared by Redskins headcoach JQ Reed in the post game presser. “The penalties, the mistakes. This is a challenge for all of us and we aren’t doing each other any favors. The dropped passes have to stop. The lapses in coverage have to stop. The mental mistakes have to stop.”

Reed was very candid in his interview and he’s correct. The Redskins gave up 70 yards on penalties alone. The coverage was rather lax which led to Dak Prescott completing 77% of his passes. Meanwhile Zeke elliott ran for 138 yards on only twenty carries. Once again Dwayne Haskins dealt with drops from his receivers, most notably Laquon Treadwell...shocking, I know.

Right tackle Jermy Parnell allowed DeMarcus Lawrence to constantly pressure Dwayne Haskins and gave up four sacks on the day.

Reed wasn’t shy about placing some of the blame on himself. “I need to make it a bit easier for Dwayne to do what he needs to do also so some of the blame is on me and the coaches as well.”

We’ll see if the Redskins can make the necessary adjustments when they face another tough test in the Chicago Bears under the monday night lights.

Redskins Keep It Simple for the Win

Image

ESPN-Thanks to simplified gameplan and strong defense, Dwayne Haskins was able to get his first win. Haskins looked sharped under the monday night lights, even with a stifling defense breathing down on him.

Head coach JQ Reed used short routes and a strong running game to make things easier for his rookie quarterback. “We knew they would try to come after him so we wanted him to get the ball out early.” And it worked. Haskins completed 70% of his passes. Though it was a light game through the air, only 200 yards on the night, Haskins was smart with the ball and it led to the Redskins first win of the season.

On the ground, Derrius Guice carried the ball 30 times to the tune of 138 yards.

The defense swarmed the Bears all night. Outside of an overly aggressive blitz call in the fourth quarter that led to a 97 yard Tarik Cohen touchdown, the defense looked excellent. Rookie Montez Sweat recorded two sacks on the night to give him four on the season. The defense played agressive and hard all night.

After three straight tough matchups, the Redskins get to breathe a bit easier when they meet the Giants next week at Metlife.

Dwayne Haskins: 19 of 27, 200 yards, 1 touchdown

Montez Sweat: 4 tackles, 2 sacks
Shaun Dion Hamilton: 7 tackles, 1 sack
Jonathan Allen: 3 tackles, 1 sack
Tanner Vallejo: 2 tackles, 1 sack
Landon Collins: 8 tackles, 2 forced fumbles

Bears Stats (2-0)

Mitchell Trubisky: 16 of 23, 162 yards, 1 fumble

Adam Shaheen: 2 receptions, 39 yards
Khalil Mack: 10 tackles, 3.5 sacks
Danny Trevathan: 13 tackles, 1 sack

ESPN-Fresh off a hard fought win over the Bears on Monday night, the Redskins looked a bit overly confident in their tilt with the Giants.

Derrius Guice was unable to get much going on the ground as the Giants stifled him at nearly every turn. The leagues 5th leading rusher coming in to the game finished with only 74 yards on 19 attempts with no touchdowns.

Rookie QB Dwayne Haskins looked good at times but also made some poor throws that led to three Giants interceptions. He completed just under 60% of his passes for 220 yards on the day.

The defense was carved up by Eli Manning to the tune of 259 yards and four touchdowns to only one pick. On a positive note running back Saquon Barkley found no room to run as he was held to only 36 yards on 18 attempts.

Rookie linebacker Montez Sweat continues to dominate in his freshman campaign as he recorded three sacks on the day. The Redskins hope to be sharper next week when they head to Foxborough for a meeting with Tom Brady and the New England Patriots.

Haskins slowly picking things up. That Washington offense ain't doing him no favours though.

Guice is that hit, but the O-line and our receivers are far from special.

Skins Return Home and Snatch a Victory from New England

Image

---------------------------
WSH - 7 / 7 / 8 / 16 // 38
NE - 10 / 5 / 7 / 0 // 22

ESPN-Have yourself a day Derrius Guice! The second year running back who missed his rookie season with a knee injury has officially arrived in the NFL. He came into the day as a top five rusher in the league, and left with a performance that will likely see him claim the top spot. The former LSU Tiger was patient and decisive with his rushing as he carved up the New England front seven for 190 yards and two touchdowns. Guice's performance helped propel the Redskins to a huge win.

Dwayne Haskins only threw 20 times but completed 15 of those passes for 154 yards, two touchdowns and an interception. The pick was a poor throw off his back foot. Other than that Haskins was smart with the ball against the Patriots opportunistic secondary.

On the other side of the ball the defense played hard and fast. Landon Collins continues to play at a Pro Bowl level as he forced two more fumbles on the day, one of which was taken back for a touchdown by Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie. Cromartie avoided four would be tacklers in route to an 87 yard return. Tom Brady was introduced to the NFL's sack leader in rookie Montez Sweat. Sweat recorded two and a half sacks on the day and was constantly pressuring Brady.

Let's hope the Redskins can carry this momentum into next week when they meet with the lowly Miami Dolphins.

Montez Sweat: 6 tackles, 2.5 sacks
Ryan Kerrigan: 1 tackle, 0.5 sacks
Josh Norman: 3 tackles, 1 interception, 1 fumble recovery
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie: 2 tackles, 1 fumble recovery, 1 touchdown
Landon Collins: 13 tackles, 2 forced fumbles
