Some of the knocks against Colby Porter Jr when he was coming out of college were his recklessness as a runner and injury history. He and everyone around the Panthers organization are hoping that his most recent injury is not a significant one.

Porter Jr went down late in the first quarter and was clutching his left knee before being carted off the field, he did not return to the game.

Before going down with the injury Porter Jr threw for 78 yards on five of seven passing. He was picked off once and had connected with Geraud Sanders for a 15 yard touchdown pass. He had also picked up 75 yards on seven runs.


SANDERS CELEBRATES A FIRST QUARTER TOUCHDOWN RECEPTION

Robert Griffin III replaced Porter Jr and played very well, completing 13 of 15 passes for 167 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He ran for an additional 35 yards.

“Just be ready.” Griffin III answered when asked about his performance. “Gotta prepare like you're gonna play and be ready.”

Carolina led 7-3 when Griffin III took over. He connected with TE Ricky Seals-Jones for an eight yard score in the second quarter and Witherspoon made it 20-3 with a 26 yard field goal later in the second quarter.


SEALS-JONES HAULS INA TD PASS FROM GRIFFIN III

Miami got in the endzone for the first time late in the half on a 98 yard Jordan Howard touchdown run.

“Ugly, ugly play there.” Panthers defensive coordinator Eric Washington said at halftime. “Hate to give those ones up like that but we gotta move past it.”

Witherspoon added a 48 yard field goal early in the third quarter to extend the lead. Griffin III and Curtis Samuel connected for a 37 yard score later in the quarter, making it 27-10.

Miami's J.K. Dobbins broke off a 62 yard touchdown run just before the end of the quarter to make the score 27-17. Washington was visibly irate following the play.

Carolina held on and topped Miami 30-20 after each team added a field goal in the fourth.

Christian McCaffrey ran for 61 yards on 16 carries for Carolina. He added 57 yards on six receptions.

Curtis Samuel led the team with 71 yards and a score on four receptions. D.J. Moore had 43 yards on two catches.

Justin Herbert struggled for Miami, finishing 11 of 19 for 117 yards and an interception.

Howard and Dobbins picked up the slack, running for over 200 yards combined on just 17 carries. Parker led Miami with 40 yards on three receptions.

PORTER JR TOSSES THREE TDS AS PANTHERS STEAMROLL SAINTS 38-17
Saints Fromm picked of twice in losing effort

Colby Porter Jr had a breakout game for the Panthers, throwing for 227 yards and three touchdowns and picking up another 131 yards rushing in a 38-17 win over the Saints.

Trailing 3-0 early in the second quarter Carolina got on the board when Jonathan Taylor pushed his way in for a six yard touchdown run.


JONATHAN THOMAS RUMBLES IN FOR A TD IN THE SECOND QUARTER

Taylor was injured later in the quarter and gave way to Jordan Scarlett, who answered a Fromm to Hill touchdown for the Saints with an eight yard score.

Fromm added a touchdown run and Witherspoon's 36 yard field goal before halftime made it 17-17 at the break.

With Taylor out Porter Jr took over in the second half, throwing all three of his touchdown passes after the break and using his legs to pick up key yardage and first downs.


PORTER JR POPS UP AFTER A BIG HIT TO CELEBRATE A FIRST DOWN RUN

Ricky Seals-Jones was on the receiving end of Porter Jr's first scoring strike to cap their first drive of the second half. Porter Jr avoided Cameron Jordan, who had four sacks in the two teams first meeting, and delivered a strike to the tight end.


PORTER JR STANDS IN AND DELIVERS A TD PSS TO SEALS-JONES

After a three and out by the Saints the Panthers extended their lead to 31-17 via a 52 yard Porter Jr pass to reserve runningback Reggie Bonnafon who was called into action due to injuries. Bonnafon got a few steps on Alex Anzalone on an option route and hauled in the pass from Porter Jr at the Saints' 26 before going into the endzone untouched.


REGGIE BONNAFON GETS BEHIND THE DEFENSE FOR AN EASY 52 YARD TD RECEPTION

Porter Jr put the final nail in New Orleans' coffin with a 31 yard touchdown pass to QB/RB/FB/WR/TE Taysom Hill, making the final score 38-17 Panthers. The win improves Carolina's record to 4-3 on the season. They will play at the Rams next Sunday night.


TAYSOM HILL SECURES A 31 YARD TOUCHDOWN PASS FROM PORTER JR IN THE 4TH QUARTER

Porter Jr finished the game 14 of 19 for 227 yards and three scores through the air. He ran for 131 yards on 10 carries, good for over 13 yards per carry. Taylor ran for 26 yards and a score on 9 carries and Scarlett ran 13 times for 61 yards and a score.

Porter Jr spread the ball around in the passing game well. Bonnafon led the team with 62 yards receiving on a pair of receptions. Seals-Jones caught three passes for 49 yards and Samuel picked up 35 yards on his three receptions. Jeudy caught a pair of passes for 33 yards and Hill picked up 31 yards on his lone reception. Bonnafon, Seals-Jones and Hill each scored.

Shaq Thompson (7) and James Bradberry (6) led the team in tackles. Brian Burns picked up a pair of sacks and Short had one as well. Jackson and McCoy also split credit for a sack. Kuechly picked off Fromm twice.

Fromm threw for 257 yards on 22 of 35 passing with a touchdown and two picks. Fromm ran four times for 12 yards and a score. Williams led the Saints with 81 yards on 18 carries with Kamara sidelined with an injury. Meredith led all receivers with 78 yards on four receptions. Smith caught a game high eight passes for 68 yards. Thomas (6/58) and Hill (4/53) also contributed.

Anzalone racked up nine tackles and a sack. Cameron Jordan had a sack as well.

PORTER JR KNOCKED OUT, SCARLETT CARRIES PANTHERS TO WIN
Reserve RB racks up over 200 yards

Colby Porter Jr had his best game of the season last week, throwing a trio of touchdown passes and leading the Panthers to a big divisional win over the Saints.

Things did not go as well this week as Porter Jr was injured in the second quarter of the contest against the Rams in Los Angeles.

Porter Jr tossed a two yard touchdown pass to D.J. Moore in the first quarter that, coupled with an earlier Witherspoon field goal gave Carolina a 10-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.


MOORE SECORES A TD PASS FROM PORTER JR

Porter Jr was injured at the end of a run midway through the second quarter. He elected to take on a tackler to get the first down and took a big hit from Rams linebacker Shane Ray. Porter Jr did not return to the game after the hit and appeared to be holding his back or ribs.


PORTER JR WOULD NOT RETURN AFTER A BIG HIT BY RAY IN THE SECOND QUARTER

Carolina leaned heavily on the running game after that, especially Jordan Scarlett, who ran for over 200 yards. After three quarters the Panthers led 13-6.

Early in the fourth quarter Scarlett broke off a 56 yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 20-6.


SCARLETT SCORES ON A 56 YARD RUN IN THE FOURTH QUARTER

The Rams added a late Goff to Higbee touchdown but were unable to recover their onside kick attempt and Carolina ran out the clock, securing a 20-13 win.

“We're not sure. We're waiting to hear back from our medical staff and we won't speculate on that right now.” Rhule replied when asked about the extent of Porter Jr's injury.

Porter Jr threw for 94 yards and a score on 11 of 15 passing before exiting the game. His six runs totaled 52 yards. Griffin III completed three of five pass attempts for 15 yards in relief. He ran the ball twice for 27 yards.

Aside from Porter Jr's injury the big story for the Panthers was Scarlett who got the start due to injuries to McCaffrey and Taylor. Scarlett carried 25 times for 203 yards and a score and was named the NFC offensive player of the week for his efforts. Bonnafon led the team with 36 yards on three receptions. Shaq Thompson recorded a team high nine tackles, Tre Boston was second with six and he also picked off Goff once. Brian Burns sacked Goff once.

For the Rams Jared Goff threw for 166 yards on 17 of 32 passing with a touchdown and an interception. Gurley ran for 63 yards on 14 carries for the Rams. Reece Fountain's 61 yards on five receptions led the team. Kiser and Ray led the defense with seven and six tackles respectively. Aaron Donald recorded a pair of sacks.

PANTHERS HOPEFUL PORTER JR CAN STOP SKID
Carolina has lost four straight since QB's injury

Panthers quarterback Colby Porter Jr has missed the past four games with fractured ribs. He has now been cleared to play this week against the Bills.

Carolina has lost four straight close games without Porter Jr. A 14-19 loss against the Lions, 16-17 at New England, 13-17 in a key divisional game against the Falcons and a 28-29 loss at Washington last week.

"We're looking for and hoping for a bit of a spark from Colby for sure." Coach Mark Rhule said when announcing that he would be starting Porter Jr one Sunday night against the Bills. "They're a good team so we're going to need to play well and with just four games left they're all big ones."

Carolina sits at 5-7 but they are fortunate to be very much in the thick of things in the NFC South as Atlanta and Tampa Bay are both currently 6-5-1 and New Orleans sits at 2-9-1.

"I can't wait to get back out there with my teammates and make a playoff push." Porter Jr said via Twitter.

Porter Jr has thrown for 1,392 yards with nine touchdowns and four interceptions on 93 of 138 passing. Robert Griffin III (779, 7, 3, 76/113) has played well in relief but Rhule did not hesitate to make the change.

Porter Jr has also tallied 725 rushing yards and three scores on 66 carries.

Carolina is also hoping for a big four games from Christian McCaffrey who has been limited to just six games so far this season due to injuries.
