PANTHERS IMPROVE TO 8-0 WITH BIG WIN OVER 49ERS
Carolina currently has the best record in the NFL, favorable schedule remains
By Ashley Barnett

"It's incredible to be a part of something like this. Obviously we have a lot more we want to get done this season but it's been a heck of a ride so far." Panthers quarterback Colby Porter Jr told me Sunday night after their 45-24 win at San Francisco.

Carolina improved to 8-0 with the win, making them the last undefeated team int he league after the Vikings lost to the Bears last night on Monday Night Football to drop to 6-1-1 on the season.

I sat down with Porter Jr. to discuss the season so far.

Carolina started their season with a 37-15 win over the Buccaneers. McCaffrey ran for 160 yards and three scores in the win.

“Worked some bugs out in that one. Took us a few games actually to get the offense really clicking and running like we wanted to.” Porter Jr. said of the season opener.

In week two Carolina once again dominated, taking down the Browns by a score of 31-10 while racking up 449 yards of total offense and holding Kirk Cousins and the Browns offense to 246. McCaffrey was the catalyst once again, picking up 181 total yards and a rushing touchdown while Porter Jr. threw for 227 yards and a score while adding 91 rushing yards ans two scores.
Week Two - Browns 10 - 31 Panthers

Week three saw a bit of a revenge game for Porter Jr. as the Panthers took down Matt Stafford and the Lions by a score of 30-17. Porter Jr. and the Panthers offense racked up 529 yards of offense. McCaffrey contributed 92 yards and a pair of scores on the ground while adding 107 receiving yards. Porter Jr. threw for 334 yards and a score and ran for 140.

After their bye week the Panthers battled Lamar Jackson and the Ravens in Baltimore, coming out on top with a 29-25 win in a truly great game. Jackson outplayed a struggling Porter Jr. but Porter Jr. and the Panthers got the last laugh when he connected with McCaffrey for a go-ahead touchdown in the game’s final minute. McCaffrey put up 273 total yards of offense with two scores in the win.
Week Five – Panthers 29 – 25 Ravens

Following their battle in Baltimore the Panthers hooked up with a struggling Cardinals team and asserted their dominance with a 62-7 win. Carolina put up 688 yards of offense. Porter Jr. threw four touchdown passes and McCaffrey ran for three more.

“That one was huge for us as a team.” Porter Jr. told me. “We had a battle up in Baltimore the week before and we knew we had a short week before Seattle but we put it together and it was just one of those games where we could do no wrong.”

After a short break the Panthers hosted a tough Seattle team on Thursday Night Football. The game was back and forth through the first half and a 75 yard TD run by McCaffrey put them ahead 16-14 at halftime.

“Just an outstanding run there.” Porter Jr. said. “That first half was tough. Clowney was all over me. Got me once good. Total shot in the arm. I think we came out and scored three times.”

They did, Porter Jr. hit Moore for a 75 yard score then ran for a 25 yard touchdown and McCaffrey added a 97 yard touchdown run late in the third quarter. A Witherspoon field goal in the fourth quarter gave Carolina a 41-17 win. Once again they put up over 600 yards of offense.

“Second half was a lot of fun. Everything was working. Both sides of the ball. Shaquem got a big third down sack early on in the third that got us all pretty jacked up too.”

Porter Jr. finished with 233 yards and a pair of touchdowns through the air. McCaffrey ran for 245 and two scores and DJ Moore caught five passes for 119.

Week eight saw the Panthers hosting a bad Falcons team that played them better than expected. Carolina managed a 38-24 win.

“Can’t count out Matty Ice.” Porter Jr. said.

Porter Jr. threw three touchdown passes and ran for another to secure the win. McCaffrey ran for 156 and a score and caught a pair of TD passes as well. Geraud Sanders caught a fourth quarter touchdown from Porter Jr. that secured the win.

Carolina then faced off against the 49ers, putting that game away with 24 points in the fourth quarter to come away with a 45-24 win.

“That was a battle. We almost had to forfeit!” Porter Jr. exclaims, referring to the fact that the Panthers had to borrow helmets from a local community college after theirs were lost in transit.

“Could have gone either way. We got the best of them in that fourth quarter though. Guys made some big plays.“

Porter Jr. ran for two touchdowns and threw a 14 yard touchdown pass to Ricky Seals-Jones in that fourth quarter by the way.

McCaffrey continued his historic season, racking up 236 rushing yards with a pair of scores and catching seven passes for 121 yards.

Carolina has a favorable schedule through week 14 before finishing the season at New Orleans then home against the Rams and then hosting the Saints to wrap up the season.

“Long ways to go.” Porter Jr. says. “Lot’s left to accomplish for us.”
