PORTER LEADS BEAVERS TO WIN DESPITE INJURY
Run heavy attack works in New Mexico Bowl win

Colby Porter Jr. "threw" the ball just three times, all of them forward option pitches, and ran for 134 yards and two touchdowns to lead Oregon State to a 46-34 win over Nevada in the New Mexico Bowl.

After the game it was revealed that Porter has an injury to his left ulnar nerve, which makes gripping and feeling the ball difficult. When the injury occurred was not made clear but there has been speculation that it goes back to the Stanford game.

"We altered the game plan obviously and wanted to keep Colby a big part of it." Head coach Gary Andersen said after the win.

"It was great to still be able to go out there with the guys and contribute and get it done." Porter Jr added.

The win gives Oregon State their 7th on the season.

"We're going to evaluate our options and make the best decision we can." Porter Jr replied when asked about the outlook for his future as a quarterback in regards to the injury.

COLBY PORTER JR GETS POSITIVE NEWS ABOUT INJURY
Doctors feel ulnar nerve injury is nearly 100% healed
By John Severs May 27, 2017, 9:14am

COLBY PORTER JR SCORES A RUSHING TOUCHDOWN AGAINST STANFORD LAST SEASON, THE GAME HE WAS INJURED IN

Colby Porter Jr. received "extremely positive reviews" regarding a nerve contusion the quarterback suffered in a game last year, teams were informed on Monday.

Porter Jr was first hurt on October 27th when his right arm was stepped on about three inches above the elbow while playing against Stanford. The nerve in his arm went dead due to the bruise and Porter Jr lost feeling in his left hand. He then re-aggravated the injury against Oregon on November 30th after missing games and had numbness in his hand throughout the rest of that game as well as in Oregon State's New Mexico Bowl win over Nevada.

Doctors said they expected the nerve to be better 90 days after the New Mexico Bowl, but the healing process took a little longer because the nerve needed to go through the elbow. So, at the New Mexico Bowl -- when people were ripping his lack of throwing the ball -- he couldn't feel his hand.

At a medical re-check earlier this month, the feeling was back in Porter Jr's fingers. There are no long-term ramifications for the nerve to fully regenerate and -- given the proper time -- it completely should heal. Doctors believe eventually they won't be able to detect that the injury happened in the first place. When they re-tested the nerve, it came back firing. A strength test revealed he now has twice the strength in his left hand from when he was examined at the end of last season.

COLBY PORTER JR DELIVERS A TD PASS IN OREGON STATE'S WIN OVER COLORADO STATE

Colby Porter Jr. wasn't heavily recruited out of high school. At least not as a quarterback. After relocating before his senior season he racked up 23 total touchdowns in just eight games at Martinsburg High School in West Virginia. He led the team to a playoff win and nearly brought them back to win a second one. Considered an "athlete" by most programs Porter Jr elected to forego a number of scholarship offers from schools that wanted him to be a runningback, slot receiver, or defensive back and enrolled at Blinn Junior College in Texas, where Cam Newton lit it up before leading Auburn to a national championship.

After taking over the starting job after two games Porter Jr. led the team to a 5-2 record and contributed 19 touchdowns. Still the offers to play quarterback were few and far between. Oregon State was one of the few.

"It felt right." Porter Jr. said. "It felt like a good fit and it felt like a way I could keep doing things my way."

Doing things his way has been important to Porter Jr. for a long time.

"My Gramps loves Sinatra. That's his favorite song. It's his jam. It's my jam too."

When he was little Porter Jr. asked his grandfather why he liked that song so much.

"He told me you gotta do things your way, be true to yourself. he'd done some things in his life that weren't the popular choice and ultimately they led him to a lot of success and really built the foundation for our family so we're all grateful that he adopted that sort of theme song. I feel like if I don't do thing my way, if I bend to some of those outside influences, I'd feel like I'm letting him down. He's not afraid to let me know about it either."

Porter Jr. said he had a conversation with his grandfather about taking a scholarship offer from West Virginia, staying close to home and playing runningback.

"That was what a lot of people were pushing me toward. It was the easy, safe choice. I had some close family members pushing me that way but it didn't feel right so me and Gramps went fishing and sorted it out."

The conversation came up last November after Porter Jr. had suffered an injury to the ulnar nerve in his left arm, making it almost impossible to grip the football.

"A lot of people told me to switch positions again, it was a question if I'd be able to throw the ball right. Three people, myself, coach and Gramps, knew I could come back."

Porter Jr. finished his sophomore season with 2,244 yards passing, 17 touchdowns and five interceptions. He ran for 1,269 and 15 scores.

He played nine full games, including the New Mexico Bowl in which he did not throw the ball aside from three forward pitches. Oregon State beat Nevada in that game.

Since being cleared medically in late May of this year Porter Jr. has been on a tear.

"He made a huge leap in the mental aspect of the game." Head Coach Gary Andersen explained. "He was seeing things that we as a coaching staff weren't always picking up on tape or in practice."

Porter Jr. has led the Beavers to three wins to start the season. He's put up incredible numbers so far, 1,062 yards passing with 11 touchdowns and no turnovers. He's also ran for 540 yards and seven more scores. He has been named the nation's offensive player of the week in each of the first three weeks of the season. He set a school record with five passing touchdowns in a 56-17 win over Minnesota. He ran for over 200 yards in last Saturday's 76-10 win over Portland State. In a 38-30 win over Colorado State to open the season he totalled 469 yards of total offense and four total touchdowns, his least impressive game thus far.

Next weekend's showdown with USC will give Porter Jr. the opportunity to show off his abilities to a national audience.

USC shuts down Porter Jr, Beavers

USC SAFETY CHRIS HAWKINS PICKS OFF A COLBY PORTER JR PASS IN THE FIRST QUARTER

Colby Porter Jr. and the Oregon State Beavers had been on a tear through their first three games with wins over Oregon State, Minnesota and Portland State under their belts. Porter Jr. had started to sneak into early Heisman conversations and the nation was tuned in to see them face off against USC in the Coliseum.

USC dominated, taking down Oregon State by a score of 47-21 and picking off Porter Jr. three times. Hawkins returned one of the picks for a touchdown. They also forced a pair of fumbles, one by Porter Jr.

Porter Jr. did throw for 305 yards and a pair of touchdowns and ran for 96 yards on 19 carries.

Meanwhile, Sam Darnold threw for 330 yards and a trio of touchdowns and USC added a kick return touchdown.

"They was putting up nice numbers and all that but they hadn't played nobody and number 1 (Porter Jr.) hadn't seen a defense like we got." Hawkins said after the game.

Aside from Porter Jr the Beavers were not able to run the ball, picking up just 26 yards on runs by other players.

With the 40-14 in the fourth quarter Porter Jr. was removed from the game and was quite obviously upset with the decision, he had to be separated from members of the coaching staff and was eventually escorted to the locker room before the game had ended.

"We're going to deal with that internally." Coach Gary Andersen said after the game. He did not elaborate when asked about the situation further. After further pressing by reporters he cut the post game press conference short. Porter Jr. was not made available to the media.

Oregon State drops to 3-1 overall. They host UCLA next week.

PORTER JR SUSPENDED
Oregon State QB out for UCLA game

PORTER JR RUNS THE BALL DURING THE LOSS AT USC

Colby Porter Jr. and the Oregon State Beavers suffered an embarrassing loss to USC last weekend. Late in the game, when it was well out of reach, Porter Jr. was removed from the game. He proceeded to lose his cool on the sidelines, having to eventually be escorted to the locker room prior to the conclusion of the game.

Oregon State coach Gary Andersen announced today that Porter Jr. will be suspended for the UCLA game.

"I want to apologize to my teammates, the coaches and the fans. I am a fierce competitor and I never want to give up on a game. It's my responsibility to set an example for my teammates and respect the decision of the coaches. Again, I'm apologize and I won't let it happen again." Porter Jr said through statement released by the team.

Darell Garretson has been announced as the starter. UCLA is 3-0 and ranked #7 in the nation.

PORTER JR STRUGGLES EARLY, LEADS OREGON STATE TO WIN
Colby Porter overcame three interceptions and scored six total touchdowns in a win over Arizona
By Gerald Franklin III Oct 12th, 2017, 1:11am

"It just happened." Colby Porter Jr. replied when asked about his somewhat emphatic celebration after running for over 20 yards on the Beavers first offensive snap. "It wasn't premeditated or anything. It had been a while since I got to make a play and I was excited about it. It's a fun game, I was having fun."

After throwing a pair of first half interceptions Porter ultimately finished with 321 yards passing along with four touchdowns and three interceptions, one of which came on a pass that was bobbled by a receiver. He also racked up an astounding 284 yards rushing on 35 carries, scoring twice.

"He's able to take over a game passing or running." Head coach Gary Andersen explained when asked about the heavy workload on Porter Jr. "Ultimately we'd like to see that carries number lower but that was what the defense was giving him and it worked out."

Oregon State came away with a 45-31 win, pulling away in the fourth quarter on a pair of touchdown passes and a rushing score by Porter Jr.

The win bumps Oregon States record up to 4-2 overall. They will host 0-6 Utah next week in Corvallis.
