RUNNING GAME, DEFENSE LEAD PANTHERS TO BIG WIN OVER BILLS
Win keeps Panthers playoff hopes alive
By Ashley Barnett

“We know there's a lot of outside stuff that we can't control but number one for us is winning the rest of our games.” Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said after the Panthers had finished off the Bills by a score of 31-13. Buffalo came into the game with an 8-4 record and were favored in the game.

Carolina had been without quarterback Colby Porter Jr for the past four games, all of which they lost, due to a rib injury.

Porter Jr wasn't dominant but was effective and efficient, completing 16 of 22 pass attempts for 217 yards and running for 68 yards and a score on eight carries.

Carolina started the game with a long drive that eventually ended with fullback Alex Armah running in for a yard out. Armah appeared to score on the previous play but it was overturned when a replay showed he was inches short of the goalline when his knee hit the ground.

Buffalo tied the game a few minutes later when Josh Allen connected with receiver Greg Ward for a six yard score with just over a minute left in the first quarter.

Carolina's Witherspoon and Buffalo's Crosby traded field goals to start the second half, making it 10-10 before Christian McCaffrey capped a Panthers drive with a four yard touchdown run.

Allen threw a pair of long passes and got the Bills down to the Carolina 21 to set up Crosby for a 38 yard field goal as the half ended, making the score 17-13 Panthers at the break.

Taysom Hill, who has been used in nearly every non-linesman position on offense, scored on an 11 yard run off a read-option give from Porter Jr in the third quarter to make it 24-13 Panthers.

Porter Jr found the endzone for the first time in the fourth quarter on an 18 yard run to make it 31-13.

Carolina's defense stopped the Bills on fourth down and Hill ran for a first down on a late fake punt that allowed Carolina to run out the clock and secure the win.

“Great to have a guy like that.” Rhule said when asked about Hill's contribution to the win. “Very versatile but more importantly incredibly unselfish and willing to help the team in any way he can.”

Rhule was then asked about the boost the team got from Porter Jr.'s return to the lineup.

“Great boost for sure. Robert did a great job filling in and we know it takes more than one player but he got the guys fired up, he's comfortable in the offense and they're comfortable with him. He's the starter so getting him back helps obviously.”

Carolina improves their record to 6-7 with the win, looking up at Tampa Bay and Atlanta who are both 6-6-1. Carolina plays Tampa Bay in two weeks.

McCaffrey, still not quite 100%, ran for 69 yards and a score on 19 carries and caught five passes for 51 yards. Other key contributors were D.J. Moore with 49 yards on four receptions, Taysom Hill with 43 yards on three receptions and 18 yards and a score on three carries. Defensively Tre Boston and Shaq Thompson each recorded eight tackles. Kawann Short had two sacks while Gerald McCoy and Brian Burns each had one. Troy Pride Jr picked off Josh Allen once.

For the Bills Allen threw for 320 yards with a touchdown and an interception on 28 of 43 passing. Singletary ran for just 34 yards on ten carries. John Brown led the team with 119 yards on eight receptions, Moore caught seven passes for 60 yards. Ward picked of 41 yards and a touchdown on his five receptions. Campbell and Edmunds each had 12 tackles and Hyde added 10. Buffalo had no sacks or interceptions.

The Panthers will look to continue their playoff push next Sunday when they play host to the 5-8 Giants on Sunday Night Football. The game also has playoff implications for the Giants as they are currently alive in the hunt for a Wild Card berth. One they could potentially steal from the Panthers.

PANTHERS TOP GIANTS IN SHOOTOUT
Win keeps Panthers playoff hopes alive
By Ashley Barnett

“Right now we're just doing everything we can to keep stacking wins and keep our chances of making the playoffs as good as they can be.” Panthers QB Colby Porter Jr said after Carolina topped the Giants 32-29 in a shootout on Sunday Night Football.

Porter Jr threw three touchdown passes and ran for a fourth in the win, playing what head coach Matt Rhule called one of his best games this season. “Big players play big in big situations.” Rhule said. “We're essentially in playoff mode every week here and Colby and the rest of the team stepped up and got us a win so big game for him leading this team.”

Aldrick Rosas scored the first points of the game, a 31 yard field goal midway through the first quarter.

Carolina answered a few minutes later via a Porter Jr to McCaffrey touchdown pass from nine yards out.

Rosas added three more points when he drilled a 55 yard field goal for the Giants early in the second quarter. Porter Jr answered and increased the Panthers lead to 14-6 with a 19 yard touchdown pass to Curtis Samuel.

Golden Tate returned the ensuing kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and Rosas put the Giants up 16-14 with a 25 yard field goal as the first half came to an end.

The third quarter was dominated by the defenses aside from one drive the Panthers put together midway through the quarter. After picking up a first down at the one yard line a pair of Porter Jr sneaks got the ball in the endzone and gave Carolina the lead back at 21-16.

The Giants jumped back in front in the fourth quarter, scoring on a Jefferson run but coming up short on the conversion attempt. After a Panthers punt New York put up seven more when Daniel Jones connected with Sterling Shepard for a two yard score. Rosas knocked through the point after and with just over five minutes to play the Giants led 29-21.

Carolina knotted things up with 3:20 to play when Porter Jr connected with former college teammate Olamide Zaccheaus on a 37 yard score. Porter Jr fired a laser to tight end Ricky Seals-Jones for the two point conversion.

“No doubt.” Porter Jr answered when asked about the pass to Zaccheaus. “We've hit a lot of those ones and we're on the same page there so once he made that cut I let it fly, I knew we had it.”

After forcing a punt by the Giants the Panthers took the lead on a Witherspoon 36 yard field goal. McCaffrey broke off a 55 yard run to set it up. A few minutes later Will Parks picked off Jones and secured the win.

“Big win.” McCaffrey said. “Team win. Keep pushing for the playoffs. Keep Pounding.”

McCaffrey ran for 167 yards on 20 carries and led the team with 66 yards on seven receptions. Porter Jr picked up 75 yards and a score on 11 carries. He threw for 211 yards and three touchdowns while completing 17 of 28 passes. D.J. Moore caught three passes for 40 yards. Zaccheaus' only reception was the 37 yard score. It was his first reception of the regular season. Curtis Samuel added 33 yards on a pair of catches.

Defensively for Carolina Shaq Thompson led the team with nine tackles and Luke Kuechly recorded eight. Kawann Short sacked Jones twice and Parks had the key interception.

Daniel Jones completed 21 of 35 passes for 201 yards with a touchdown and an interception. Jermarr Jefferson, replacing an injured Saquan Barkley, ran for 88 yards and a score on 21 carries. Evan Engram led the team with 67 yards on seven receptions. Tate (3/44) and Shepard (5/40 1TD) were also key contributors in the passing game. Tate also impacted the game as a kick returner. Ogeltree and Love led the team with seven tackles each. Winfield Jr added six. A.J. Epenesa recorded three sacks.

Carolina improves to 7-7 with the win and they are half a game behind Atlanta (7-6-1) and a half game ahead of Tampa Bay (6-7-1) who they host next Sunday at 1:00PM. Carolina will then wrap up their season at Dallas in week 17.

MCCAFFREY CARRIES PANTHERS TO WIN OVER BUCS
Win keeps Panthers playoff hopes alive
By Ashley Barnett

“We've been in playoff mode for a few weeks now, like I've been saying.” Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said following Carolina's win over Tampa Bay. “We need to win out and maybe need some help but step one is win out so we took another step toward the playoffs with that win. This team has really stepped up these past few weeks.”

Quarterback Colby Porter Jr scored first for the Panthers on a one yard run late in the first quarter. Porter Jr ran less than he had been as of late, carrying the ball just six times and picking up 48 yards and the score.

The second quarter was a back and forth affair as the Buccaneers tied things up via a 13 yard Jameis Winston touchdown pass to Mike Evans.

A couple minutes later Christian McCaffrey put Carolina back on top with a 38 yard touchdown run.

Tampa Bay bounced right back with Winston throwing a second touchdown pass, this time a 19 yard strike to tight end Nick Vannett.

Witherspoon added a 39 yard field goal before halftime and his 27 yarder was the only score in the third quarter.

Witherspoon hit a third field goal early on in the fourth quarter to put the Panthers on top 23-14 before a third Winston touchdown pass with just under three minutes to play made it 23-21 Carolina. Winston connected with Cole Beasley for that score.

After recovering the Buccaneers onside kick attempt the Panthers were attempting to run down the clock when McCaffrey got free for a 33 yard score with 1:52 left, putting the game away.

McCaffrey was the workhorse of the day, picking up 192 yards and two touchdowns on 24 carries and 37 yards on six receptions. Taysom Hill led the Panthers with 62 receiving yards on three catches along with one carry for six yards.

Porter Jr (11/19 119 yards) was outplayed by Winston (16/27 235 yards 3TD 1Int) but did not make any mistakes in a close game.

For the Bucs Jones was held to 31 yards on 17 carries. Jones (4/79), Evans (5/67 1TD) and Godwin (3/29) led the team in receiving.

Delpit and White led the Bucs with 11 and 10 tackles respectively while Parks' 9 paced the Panthers. Delpit, McKinley and White each recorded a sack for Tampa Bay while Haynes and Burns each had one for the Panthers.

Shaq Thompson's interception of Winston was the only turnover of the game.

Witherspoon went 3/3 on extra points and 3/3 on field goals. Palardy punted three times for 171 yards and pinned the Bucs inside their 20 once. Olamide Zaccheaus returned three punts for 33 yards.

“We had several guys contribute in several ways today and that's what you want. Obviously Christian had a big game but he couldn't do that without everyone else out there doing their jobs. Great team win.” Rhule added.

McCaffrey's big performance earned him the NFC offensive player of the week award.

Carolina improves to 8-7 with the win. Atlanta won their second straight to stay atop the division with a 8-6-1 record.

Carolina faces a tough test in week 17 as they travel to face the Cowboys who have clinched the #1 seed in the NFC at 11-3-1. No other team in the NFC has more than 8 wins so the Panthers could be anywhere from the 2 seed to out of the playoffs depending on the result of that game. Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy has stated that the full team will play and they have no intention of resting anyone.

OT PICK SINKS PANTHERS
Cowboys hang on, Panthers knocked out of playoffs
By Ashley Barnett

“Really proud of the season we had. We accomplished a lot. Of course you want to keep playing, you want to be in the playoffs.” Panthers head coach Matt Rhule said following an overtime loss in Dallas that knocked them out of the playoffs.

Carolina's first possession came to an end when Curtis Samuel fumbled the ball away.

After the turnover Dallas scored first on a 45 yard Dak Prescott to Ezekiel Elliott pass. Rookie Kicker Brett Cimaglia missed the point after.

Late in the first quarter Colby Porter Jr connected with receiver Olamide Zaccheaus for a 42 yard score. Zaccheaus stretched and made the catch one handed then outran Dallas defenders for the score.

Rhule elected to go for it on fourth and goal late, concerned that Prescott and the Dallas offense would have ample time to get into field goal range to tie or even score a touchdown and win. Leighton Vander Esch came free through the A gap and forced Porter Jr to throw the ball away.
