DUNCAN’S BIG CATCH LATE SET UP A GAME WINNING FIELD GOAL FOR PACIFIC
ROLLERCOASTER
Pacific jumps out to a big lead, has to come back for win

Reno, Nevada -
Following a pair of mismatch games against power five conference opponents the Pacific Tigers had been looking forward to their first Mountain West Conference game at Nevada.

Playing in a downpour the first quarter was largely a game of field position with each team punting to end their first two drives. The Pacific defense recorded third down sacks on each of Nevada’s first two possessions. Pacific ended the scoreless tie with a 28 yard field goal by Kris Gudmundsson with just over a minute left in the first quarter. A 21 yard catch and run by freshman wide receiver DeAndre James was the key play of the drive.

Another third down sack by Pacific forced a third straight punt by Nevada early in the second quarter. Pacific’s offense then put together a 16 play drive that ended with true freshman quarterback D’Arnel Lee connecting with Darrin Duncan for an 11 yard touchdown. Lee replaced starter Myles Carr after he was shaken up on a sack the play before. Carr would return and play the remainder of the game. Carr completed passes to Christian Tober for 14, 10 and 11 yards on the drive.

Nevada got on the board on their ensuing possession via a Don Jackson touchdown run from 18 yards out.

Pacific put together a successful two minute scoring drive with Carr capping it himself on an 11 yard read option keep run. Gudmundsson’s kick made it 17-7 Pacific at halftime.

Pacific would add a 35 yard Gudmundsson field goal in the third quarter, making it a 20-7 lead going into the fourth quarter.

Following punts by each team and a failed fourth down conversion by Pacific the Wolfpack cut into the lead when backup runningback Chris Solomon ran for a six yard score.

Pacific went three and out.

Cody Fajardo completed a 39 yard pass to Chance Early, putting Nevada at the Pacific 36. After a sack and a pair of incompletions Fajardo hit Aaron Bradley on the sideline for a 38 yard gain down to the five yard line. On the next play Fajardo found Kaodi Dike wide open in the back corner when Pacific blitzed. Colin Ditsworth’s kick was true and Nevada took a 21-20 lead with 41 seconds left.

After a touchback on the kickoff Carr threw incomplete for Tober. The Carr connected with Tober for a gain of 19. Following three straight completions Carr finally connected with tight end Billy Freeman for a gain of 19 more, down to the Nevada 37. Duncan outjumped a defender on the next play, pulling in the pass and picking up 29 yards. Hall ran for a gain of five and centered the ball and Gudmundsson connected on a 20 yard field goal with ease.

Nevada’s desperation hail mary was picked off by Jay’Onn Myles to end the game.

“I saw a lot of fight out there today. It wasn’t easy on either side of the ball. You never want to see a lead like that slip away but we made plays when we needed them and ultimately at the end of the game we had the lead.” Fassel said following the win.

TIGERS SIGN FIRST TWO TO CLASS OF 2015
Pair of Linesmen first to sign

COLLEGE OF THE REDWOODS DE KILE O'CONNOR WAS THE FIRST TIGERS CLASS OF 15 SIGNEE

Pacific has received official commitments from a pair of players over the past few days.

The first to sign was defensive end Kile O'Connor of El Monte, California. O'Conner was a standout at Arroyo High school as an offensive and defensive linesman. After not receiving any scholarship offers he liked he enrolled at College of the Redwoods and started every game at defensive end. He was named All-CCCAA.

O'Conner is ranked the 209th best defensive end in the nation and received a one star rating from Rivals.com.

"We were very excited to get Kile on board." Defensive backs coach and recruiter Kato Serwanga explained. "He was on our radar last season but unfortunately the numbers didn't work out."

O'Conner is listed at 6'2" and 222 pounds. He chose Pacific over San Jose State and Fresno State.

He doesn't possess a ton of speed and quickness but he is adept at getting off blocks both against the run and the pass. He is a solid tackler and always seems to find the ball. He fits best as a defensive end in a four man front.

Joining O'Conner is offensive linesman Steven Whaley from Tennyson High School in Hayward, California. The 6'8" 290 pounder is listed as the 117th best offensive tackle in the nation and received a two star rating from Rivals.

Whaley chose Pacific over UNLV. He cited staying close to home and having an opportunity to play early as motivating factors.

Whaley is a very good run blocker but could stand to polish his pass blocking skills. Despite his size he could stand to add some muscle.

FLETCHER'S LATE PICK SIX SEALED THE WIN FOR PACIFIC
THE CLOSER
Willie Fletcher picks off three passes including a walk off pick six and Pacific tops Utah State

Stockton, Caifornia -
For the second week in a row the Pacific Tigers found themselves coming away with a victory in a back and forth affair.

Pacific jumped out to a 10-0 lead in a sloppy first quarter that saw each quarterback throw a pair of interceptions. Pacific was able to keep it together enough to score on a six yard Rashad Hall run and add a Kris Gudmundsson 25 yard field goal later in the quarter.

Utah State got on the scoreboard early in the second quarter when quarterback Chuckie Keeton scored on a 45 yard read option keep. The Aggies took their first lead a few minutes later when backup quarterback Craig Harrison connected with a very wide open Keegan Anderson for a 36 yard score. The tight end had gotten lost by the defense right in the middle of the field and didn't have a defender within 20 yards when he caught the pass. The score came two plays after Utah State linebacker Kyler Fackrell recovered a fumble by Pacific quarterback Myles Carr.

"Communication error." Fassel explained when asked about the play at halftime.

A few minutes later Pacific was back on top after freshman backup quarterback D'Arnel Lee ran into the endzone from two yards out. Lee had stepped in for Carr who was shaken up a few plays earlier after taking a hit on an incompletion. Lee's touchdown run was set up by a 44 yard completion to Braden Bishop.

After a 49 yard punt return by Brandon Chin set Pacific up inside the Utah State 20 yard line Carr scrambled and scored from a yard out on a run. Gudmundsson missed the point after. Pacific led 23-14 at halftime.

Utah State punted to end their first possession of the second half and Pacific extended their lead via a 43 yard Gudmundsson field goal. Utah State bounced right back when Kelvin Lee returned the ensuing kickoff 101 yards for a score. Coach Fassel was furious.

Each team punted to round out the third quarter.

After three more punts Utah State found the endzone once again when Keeton scored on a two yard run. The score was set up by a 32 yard run by Joe Hill and runs of four and nine yards by Kelvin Lee. Utah State's two point conversion attempt failed and with just over three minutes left to play the score was 27-26 Utah State.

Following a trio of runs by Rashad Hall Pacific was facing a fourth and inches at their own 28 yard line. Fullback Cody Barnett got the call and appeared to have the first down. The ball was spotted short of the line to gain and Utah State took possession.

Pacific's defense stepped up and held Utah State to a field goal, giving them a 30-26 lead with 1:40 left in the game.

Following a touchback Carr threw incomplete intended for Christian Tober then connected with tight end Billy Freeman for a gain of 23 yards. After another incompletion he hit Hall for a gain of six then Freeman for a gain of four. Next he found freshman Lukaz Richardson on a post for a gain of 15 yards down to the Utah State 27. On the next play Carr found backup runningback Jomal Sampson on a wheel route for a gain of 23. On the next play he went back to Sampson, connecting with the back for a four yard touchdown. Gudmundsson's kick made it 33-30 Pacific with 30 seconds left to play.

After a trio of Keeton completions Utah State was set up at the Pacific 45 yard line with 16 seconds on the clock. Keaton threw incomplete. On the next play Keaton was looking for junior receiver Brandon Swindall on an out route but Pacific cornerback Willie Fletcher picked off his third pass of the day and took it 52 yards to the house, ending the game.
