STRINGER FENTON CATCHES THE OPENING KICKOFF DEEP IN THE ENDZONE

PLAYING TO WIN
Fassel’s gutsy call pays off as Pacific makes it three straight

Las Cruces, New Mexico -
In cold and rainy weather Pacific wasted no time heating things up when Stringer Fenton took the opening kickoff 104 yards for a touchdown. Fenton caught the ball in the endzone and didn’t hesitate a bit to bring it out.

“He’s got the green light. That’s that.” Special teams assistant Matt Stover replied when asked about the play.

“I liked the look and I trust them guys to make the blocks and I just said I’m gonna go get one.”

New Mexica State took a bit longer to score, putting together an eight play drive that backup QB King Davis III capped with an eight yard run.

Pacific’s next drive ended on a lost fumble by Khalani Muhammad. Each team then turned the ball over on down and Pacific cornerback Jay’Onn Myles picked off a Davis pass to end the Aggies next possession. Set up in good field position Pacific capitalized with a 20 yard Myles Carr touchdown pass to Braden Bishop.

New Mexico State tied the game on a one yard touchdown run by Davis early in the second quarter then took their first lead of the game when Maxwell Johnson kicked a 40 yard field goal. Kris Gudmundsson tied it back up with a 34 yard field goal.

Davis found runningback Germi Morrison for a 40 yard catch and run touchdown pass then Myles Carr connected with tight end AJ Olson for a 44 yard score. Olson held off a defender with a stiff arm to fight into the endzone.

After the first half fireworks things were relatively quiet in the third quarter with the only points coming on a Morrison five yard touchdown run for New Mexico State. Carr was picked off by Aggies linebacker Kalea Auelua in the quarter.

Following a punt by New Mexico State on their first possession of the fourth quarter Pacific put together an 18 play drive that covered 85 yards and used up a big chunk of the fourth quarter. Key plays on the drive were an 18 yard Carr completion to Marvin Cotton, a ten yard Carr pass to tight end Billy Freeman, a 13 yard scramble by Carr that followed a loss of nine on a sack, a 13 yard Carr pass to Rashad Hall and a quarterback sneak for the touchdown by Ty Francis Jr from less than a yard out.

New Mexico State got the ball back with 2:19 left to play and went to work quickly. Morrison ripped off runs of 14 and 13 yards then caught a pass for a gain of 17 a couple plays later, setting the Aggies up at the Pacific 28 yard line. Davis III went right back to Morrison on a screen and he took it to the house to put the Aggies on top 38-31 with 1:40 left to play.

After a 19 yard kick return by Fenton the Pacific offense took over at their 28 yard line with 1:36 showing on the clock. Francis Jr checked in at quarterback and ran for a gain of 13 yards then again for a yard. Carr completed a pass to Olson but he couldn’t pick up any yardage. On third and nine Carr scrambled for a gain of ten yards and a first down at the 47. Carr connected with third string runningback Wallace Kenney for a gain of 12 yards, then found Freeman for a gain of eight. After an incompletion Carr found Olson for a gain of 14 yards down to the New Mexico State 20 yard line. With 27 seconds left Carr went back to Olson and he picked up 16 yards down to the four yard line. Wallace Kenney, who was rotating with Rashad Hall for most of the fourth quarter with Muhammad on the sidelines, got the call and fought his way into the endzone after initially getting stopped on the one yard line.

After some hesitation Coach Fassel held up two fingers and pointed to Francis Jr. Fourth string RB Charles Brown checked in to spell Kenney and Hall. The play call was a read option and the Aggies defense attacked Francis Jr, leaving a six yard wide hole in the middle which Brown exploded through into the endzone, giving Pacific a 39-38 lead with :19 seconds to play.

New Mexico State refused to roll over. After a squib kick by Pacific and a decent return the Aggies took possession at their 46. Davis III connected with tight end Perris Scoggins for a gain of two yards then found number one receiver Austin Franklin on a post route for a gain of 18, setting them up at the Tigers 36 yard line with time for one play. Well outside kicker Maxwell Johnson’s range the Aggies had no choice but to throw one into the endzone and hope for the best. Davis III looked for the 6’2” Franklin once again but Pacific’s Jay’Onn Myles (5’7”) was there, knocking the ball to the ground and securing a third straight win for Pacific.

Powercats - The Rebirth of Pacific Football

Post by djp73 » 12 Nov 2019, 08:23

The previous game said it was an ESPN classic (obviously) but I did not see the popup and it did not get added to the list.

Also the game indicates that Fenton's 104 yard kick return touchdown is a record, I couldn't find anything on a quick google search to dispute that.

RAIN OUT
Pacific's offense struggles badly in downpour

Stockton, California -
Pacific’s offense struggled mightily in the pouring rain. The most exciting play by far was a 24 yard pass by punter Lionel Mata to a diving Cody Barnett.

The Tigers threw three interceptions and scored just once on five trips into the redzone.

Barnett scored the team’s only touchdown on a two yard run in the fourth quarter.

Andrew McDonald replaced a struggling Myles Carr at quarterback after halftime and fared only slightly better.

Pacific receivers dropped nine passes. The offensive line couldn’t get any push in the running game and the coaches had no choice but to throw the ball.

“Ugh.” Fassel said after the game.

Defensively Pacific gave up 436 yards but San Jose State’s offense ran 85 plays.

A WASHINGTON STATE DEFENDER GRABS ONE OF MANY TAKEAWAYS
”JUST NOT VERY GOOD AT ALL”
Pacific offense offensive against Washington State

Pullman, Washington -
Myles Carr threw four interceptions before Andrew McDonald replaced him. McDonald was worse, throwing a pair of interceptions and losing the ball on a fumble on his first snap.

Overall the Tigers turned the ball over seven times and Washington State couldn’t help but win the game in a landslide.

When asked about the effort following the game Fassel was candid saying that it was “Just not very good at all.” And that he was very frustrated with the offenses performance. He also stated that he didn’t know who was the team’s starting quarterback going forward.

“The defense was pretty good considering.” Fassel replied when pushed for a bright spot.

The defense surrendered 352 yards of offense and 34 points which actually wasn’t that bad considering that Washington State had seven takeaways and ran 80 plays on offense.

Both teams are now 3-5 on the season.
