Huskies utilize bye week to finalize extensions for All-Pro CB Konrad, Pro Bowl LT Vernon and G Mackey
Last Sunday against the New York Giants, the Toronto Huskies ran the ball fifty times behind it's offensive line and used it's defense -- powered by some key turnovers -- to beat the Giants. This has been the blueprint for a few seasons now for Toronto and they're trying to keep it that way.
The team announced extensions for two of their offensive linemen in Dominique Vernon and Drew Mackey while also extending cornerback Ashley Konrad during their bye week.
Konrad, a two-time All-Pro, signed a five year, $82.3 million extension to keep him in Canada. The fourth year man recorded 24 interceptions in his first two seasons and had two interceptions last week. The extension makes the former first round pick one of the highest paid corners in the league.
Mackey and Vernon signed similar deals with Vernon's coming in at $72.3 million and Mackey's at $69.8 million, both over five years as well. Since being selected with the sixth pick in 2022, Vernon has made the pro bowl twice. Mackey was also picked in that same draft, six picks later, and has been just as productive. He allowed just one sack last season and has never allowed more than six sacks in a season.
The only members of the 2022 class that haven't been extended are cornerback Donovan Bigby (second round), running back Sherwin Florence (fourth round) and fullback Brent Lowe (sixth) while the last pick of the class, tight end Nick Shade, never made the 53-man roster.
With nearly $30 million left in cap, Toronto could look to extend all three although an extension for Florence is not likely. Florence's involvement in the offense has decreased while running back Angelo McBride has become the unquestioned top back and his rookie contract expires after next season. There's also running back Kyree Sampson who is averaging six yards per carry on the season.
