Opinion: Don't expect Chargers to be big spenders this offseason
The Los Angeles Chargers spent the 2028 season being strapped financially due to a ton of cap penalties, dead money and just having one of the higher payrolls in the sport.

Don't expect them to splurge with their newfound cap freedom.

The Chargers have been linked by fans and the like as being potential suitors for edge rusher Nolan Garrison and linebacker Nate Culberson, both players drafted by Chargers GM Stephon White when he was with the Huskies. An ode to White's scouting talent is the fact that both players are likely to be among the highest paid players this off-season which is precisely the reason that no official reports have gone out stating their interest in either play.

Even with nearly $40 million in cap space, the Chargers don't appear to be slated to be big spenders and that's the correct move. All-Pro offensive guard Stephen Zeigler is on the last year of his deal and so is former number four overall pick defensive end Vincent Zellner. Defensive back Samuel Fleming was also drafted in that same class as Zellner and center Austin Griggs is another name to watch.

The deck is even more loaded in 2030 with all three starting corners, QB Will Castonzo, S Derwin James, WR D.K. Metcalf and A.J. Brown, LT Melvin McKinley, LG Chauncey Truman and RT Jerron Bowman all being due for a re-up along with linebacker DeAndre Bridge and defensive back Sean Butler.

White left Toronto before this happened but they had a real issue keeping some of the gems that they drafted such as TE Brycen Hopkins, G Edwin Rankin and even this offseason with Culberson and Garrison. Acquiring the talent via the draft is hard enough, managing the cap is another struggle and one that the Chargers should get out ahead of by being prudent during this free agency class.

Depth is Wealth as Chargers Load Up On 'Auxiliary' Additions
The Los Angeles Chargers were very busy in the first few days of free agency, signing nine players with fans knowing the names and faces of very few of them.

The list of signings included former Carolina Panther hybrid skill player Curtis Samuel as well as former New York Jets linebacker Blake Cashman along with former Redskins/Huskies/Broncos defensive lineman Jonathan Allen.

Houston's D.J. Reader is another name that folks might be familiar in as the team needed depth along it's defensive line. They continued to add to that front seven with additions of edge defenders Brett Hillman and Mike Eakin.

Linebacker Walt Chatman, receiver Artez Crawford and cornerback DeAndre Cox were also signed.

Cox, a veteran starter in the league, signed the biggest deal of the bunch at one year, $4.2 million total to potentially compete for that starting dime back position with Sean Butler. Hillman got the longest contact, coming in at three year, $13.4 million. The former third round pick might be able to get some run on short yardage situations as Rashard Keaton has struggled against the run and that is Hillman's specialty as he lacks the ideal length at just five-foot-eleven for a pass rusher.

Path to the Draft ‣ Los Angeles Chargers Draft Reports
Eric Wilson -- Dynasty Sports Staff Writer

‣ Lockhart performance at Combine could hurt stock, aid Chargers' chance

Los Angeles Chargers NT Cedric Darius has been a consistent, dependent nose guard since he broke the starting lineup as a rookie. In the NFL, however, teams are always looking to get better and with few gaping holes on the roster, Darius' spot has been one that many pundits have wondered if the Chargers would look to use their first round pick to upgrade that position.

One player that has widely been considered to be the best defensive tackle in the draft was Temple's Marcus Lockhart before a rocky senior season slid him down draft boards and now after a poor Combine performance coupled with his Senior Bowl showing, Los Angeles might have a shot at him.

Lockhart is listed at six-foot-four and 318 pounds but finished 20th among defensive linemen with 29 reps on the bench press. His downfall has also saw Texas A&M Carlton Parnell rise in draft boards as well as Oregon State's Deacon Yates who might have worked himself into a top ten pick.

Yates finished first in every Combine drill except for the 40-yard dash where at 304 pounds, he ran a 4.84 forty. Just freaky stuff.

‣ Olympian track star, Vanderbilt CB Christian falters at the Combine

If you believe in draft tends, Vanderbilt's Daymond Christian was meant to be drafted by the Los Angeles Chargers. A former Olympian in the 400m dash, Christian was pegged by many to run the fastest 40 in the combine. The Chargers have targeted track stars with the selection of Sean Butler, a virtual football unknown, and picking Samuel Fleming several rounds before others pegged him to go.

Instead, he ran just a 4.52 forty dropping his draft grade from a first round grade to a potential day two pick by many of the experts, including Todd McShay. The addition of DeAndre Cox in free agency relaxes the immediate need for a corner but nevertheless, he's a player to watch.

‣ Donnell, Hargrove fit the bill for need at WR

In essence, the Chargers spent two first rounds picks last season at WR when they traded them to Tennessee for A.J. Brown. They are likely to not spend their first or second pick at that position but after that, it's fair game.

When looking at the draft board, a few players fit the slot receiver role that Odell Beckham is leaving open. Jackie Donnell out of Alabama was uber productive with the Tide but at five-foot-nine, he lacks the elite speed that you want from an undersized player (4.55 in the 40) and might struggle to get open in the league.

Shannon Hargrove is of the similar ilk, leading the nation in catches for the past two seasons. He's a bit bigger at 5'11" and 204 pounds and is a surgeon when it comes to running routes out of the slot.

The Chiefs also added a left tackle in Princeton Stackhouse while former Charger Hunter Henry went back east to the Philadelphia Eagles.

Chargers Trade DT Darius to Move Up, Select Oregon State DT Yates
The Los Angeles Chargers had their eye on their guy the whole time and gave up, once again, what was acquired to attain him.

The Chargers traded away their 32nd pick and defensive tackle Cedrius Darius to the Atlanta Falcons in exchange for the 10th overall pick which they used to draft Oregon State defensive tackle Deacon Yates.

Yates shot up draft boards following a Combine performance that saw him do 41 reps on the bench press, run a 4.41 on the 20-yard shuttle, jump 35.4" in the vertical, 10'5" in the broad and topped it off with a 4.84 40-time at six-foot-seven and 304 pounds.

His production at Oregon State wasn't elite, recording just ten sacks in three seasons but Yates is one of the better pure athletes the NFL has seen in quite some time at his size and the Chargers are hoping that surrounding him with the likes of Christian Childs and Vincent Zellner will help him tap into that potential.

Chargers Remain in the Trenches, Draft OL Tate and DT Lockhart
With no second round picks due to both the A.J. Brown trade and the Deion Daniel compensatory pick only netting them a third round pick, the Chargers watched as a few of their targets in cornerback Daymond Christian and WR Jackie Donnell went off the board.

The Chargers were active in the third round, selecting Illinois interior offensive lineman Kendall Tate with the 85th overall pick and Temple defensive tackle Marcus Lockhart with the

Tate is listed at six-foot-four and 336 pounds, having played everywhere alongside the Illinois offensive line outside of left tackle. He started as backup during his freshman year, earning two starts at right guard before moving to right tackle as a sophomore. Injuries during his junior season saw him move to center before ultimately finishing his career at left guard.

Tate is very similar to Chauncey Truman in that he's a road grader who has a lot of room for improvement as a pass protector. The potential is there however and he offers the team some depth along the interior offensive line as a swing guard.

In Lockhart, the Chargers continue to beef up their interior defensive line. Unlike Christian Childs and Vincent Zellner, Lockhart is a pure run stuffer in the mold of Cedrius Darius. At 6'4" and 318 pounds, his testing numbers saw his draft stock slide which is why the Chargers were able to select him in the third round. Only time will tell if the pundits got it right or the Chargers.
