Anthony Porter to buy Washington Redskins for $4 billion
Sean Ellington -- Dynasty Sports Insider

The Washington Redskins had existed for 87 years. It took three days for that to no longer be the case.

Last Friday, 29 out of 32 owners voted to proceed with the sale and relocation of the Washington Redskins to the city of Toronto, effective at the start of the next league year. The Redskins were sold for $4 billion to a business group led by billionaire venture capitalist Anthony Porter. Porter had previously attempted to purchase some of Snyder's ownership stake earlier in the year but conversations stalled.

The vote took place in what was an impromptu owners meeting which was set to discuss the legal trouble of Redskins owner Daniel Snyder. In the days before the meeting, Snyder resumed negotiations with Porter as his sentencing date for his tax evasion charge were approaching.

Porter was not expected at the owners meeting in NYC last Wednesday where he delivered an hour-long presentation to the other owners about the deal he had brokered with Snyder to purchase the team by the end of the 2020 league calendar and have the team be in Toronto by the start of the 2021 season. The owners kicked Porter out of the room, literally, and shortly after they did the same with Snyder. They discussed what had just happened for about an hour before inviting Snyder back in and eventually Porter.

Porter returned to the same meeting room the next day where him and his group delivered their formal presentation which included a secured site for a football stadium in Toronto as well as pledging $700 million of their own money into building the stadium. The initial reaction was still the same by the day's end as the owners did not want to make such a drastic move even given the dire times. The meeting continued into the next day with just the owners present along with Snyder. Snyder pleaded for their approval and once New England Patriots Robert Kraft was on-board, the tide started shifting.

"We can romanticize this idea of [Porter] doing this hostile takeover and being this bad ass," said a league source, "But ultimately, it was a business decision. The owners can't force Snyder to sell the team and at this point, they need him to sell the team so he's got that going for him. The NFL also wants to be in Toronto and when you have a group that has the land and is willing to commit $700 million into it, you now get football in Toronto. You also get rid of the whole Redskins name controversy and once they got over the idea of losing football in the nation's capital, it became the right decision. Selfishly, if you're an owner of a team, you can now threaten your city 'hey, get me a stadium or I'm going to D.C.' Los Angeles was that carrot for a while and it's gone, Las Vegas is taken up so you pretty much moved a team into one of the world's biggest media market while also opening up a potential expansion team which will be an easier sell than an expansion team in Toronto."

With the bid in hand, Porter's group will now need to start provisioning for their 2021 debut as a franchise. As part of the agreement, the Redskins legacy will remain in Washington D.C. which will need to be agreed upon and finalized between the NFL, the Redskins and the two cities. While the sale is agreed in principle and the NFL has agreed to allow Porter to move the team, the sale is not finalized and the process is not over.

There is still a 'small possibility' that the Redskins are still playing in Washington come 2021 but talks have already begun to prepare for the team to be playing at BMO Field and Rogers Centre in 2021 while the long-term stadium currently has tentative opening date set for 2022.

Snyder avoids prison time as sentencing process finalized
Sean Ellington -- Dynasty Sports Insider

Daniel Snyder won't be spending the next few months of his life in a prison cell after all.

Though prosecutors recommended 18 months in prison, he was able to avoid prison time. He was sentenced to three years of probation. He must also serve 280 hours of community service and pay a $75,000 fine. The former Redskins owner has already paid over $900,000 in back taxes and penalties since pleading guilty.
