The Chargers have an opportunity to maintain their led in the AFC West following Kansas City's loss to the Las Vegas Raiders last week if they can take care of business against the Jets. The team is still looking for their first home win in SoFi Stadium.

There is perhaps no better moment to achieve that than against New York, which ranks at the bottom of the pack in terms of yards gained and allowed. The Jets will also be without two key defensive players; linebacker C.J. Mosley is still nursing an ankle injury while defensive tackle Damon Harrison Sr. has been ruled out with a broken wrist.

However through 5 games Jets head coach Adam Gase seems to have harnessed Sam Darnold's strengths as a quarterback. The 3rd year pro has done an impressive job of protecting the football and currently is tied for the league lead in touchdowns. His favorite target has been offseason acquisition Josh Doctson, who has more than a 1/3 chance of scoring each time he touches the football. The receiver leads the league with 7 touchdowns on just 19 catches. Gase and Darnold will have to contend with a Chargers defense that is coming off victories against two of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game in Tom Brady and Drew Brees.

What's helped Los Angeles in their last 2 wins is the improved ground game, spearheaded by Austin Ekeler. He'll look to continue his hot streak on the ground against the Jets as the Chargers try to maintain their undefeated record with Justin Herbert at quarterback.

Chargers nab first home win in SoFi Stadium
The Los Angeles Chargers kept the good times rolling with Justin Herbert, who helped deliver the team's first win in SoFi Stadium. The home win marks as Herbert's first as the team's starting quarterback.

Herbert is coming off a 3-touchdown game in which he led the Chargers to a last-second win on the road against the New Orleans Saints. He continues to make a significant impact on the Chargers' offense, throwing for 298 yards and 2 touchdowns today against the Jets while completing 76 percent of his passes. Los Angeles had their way with the NFL's 31st-ranked defense, compiling a season-high 424 yards of offense. Austin Ekeler set a new career-high with 128 rushing yards. Keenan Allen led all players with 9 catches and 112 yards. Dillon Mitchell continued kept his 2-game scoring streak alive with another touchdown in the 1st quarter.

The defense also had their best performance of the season in terms of yards allowed, surrendering just 215 to the Jets. After scores from Le'Veon Bell and Breshad Perriman in the 1st half, the New York offense was shut down. Joey Bosa recorded his second 4-sack game of the season, pushing his sack total to 10 for the year. Sam Darnold, who had 3 interceptions for the entire season coming into the game, threw 3 today. Safety Nasir Adderley recorded his first career pick.

In spite of these accolades and accomplishments, the score made the score seem closer than indicated. Ekeler fumbled twice late in the game as the Jets became desperate to regain possession of the football. However, even with great starting position, New York could not seem to capitalize. The game wasn't a forgone conclusion until Justin Jackson punched in a 3-yard touchdown with 4 minutes and 38 seconds remaining.

Next week features a matchup between two rookie quarterbacks in Herbert and Tua Tagovailoa when the Chargers meet the Dolphins. Tagovailoa was selected one pick ahead of Herbert in the 2020 NFL draft.

Deshaun Watson makes his case for MVP
There's no doubt that if the season were to end today, Watson's name would be in the MVP conversation. Given what happened in the offseason when the Texans traded away one of the best wide receivers in the NFL, Watson's production was expected to take a huge hit. However, that hasn't been the case. He's boasting an 11 to 2 touchdown-to-interception ratio through 6 games and has Houston sitting at the top of the AFC South with a 4-2 record. Several of their wins have come against the Kansas City Chiefs and a shutout of the Minnesota Vikings.

Is Chicago's patience paying off?
The Bears started the season incredibly slow but have won 3 of their last 4 contests, with their latest coming against the undefeated Carolina Panthers. The nation will get to see if the Bears are who we thought they were (that is, an improved team under Nick Foles) next week against the winless Los Angeles Rams on Monday night.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Patriots and 49ers face off next week in a potential Super Bowl preview?
The Patriots (5-0) are arguably better than the 2019 version, and the same can be said for the Niners (5-1), who made it to the Super Bowl last season. It should be an exciting game in Foxborough.
