The Los Angeles Chargers caught a glimpse of the Cincinnati Bengals in the preseason prior to their upcoming regular season contest. The Chargers won convincingly, although the starters for both teams only played several drives in the matchup.

There is no doubt that the Chargers defense will test rookie quarterback Joe Burrow in his regular season debut. Melvin Ingram is returning from a preseason shoulder injury, and Burrow will face possibly the best secondary he'll see this year. Casey Hayward Jr., Michael Davis, Chris Harris Jr., Desmond King II, Nasir Adderley, and Derwin James Jr. are all set to take the field on Sunday. They'll have the task of complaining a potentially explosive offense. A.J. Green is returning from an ankle injury that kept him out all last season. Tyler Boyd has emerged as a top receiver in the last 2 years. John Ross III is one of the fastest players in the NFL. The Bengals also added Tee Higgins to their arsenal as well as tight end Cameron Brate. They bolster a strong duo in the backfield between Joe Mixon and Giovani Bernard.

Tyrod Taylor will take the snap behind center for Los Angeles after being named the team's starting quarterback following an intensive preseason competition with Justin Herbert. Taylor expressed optimism about the upcoming season, saying that the Chargers should be one of the best teams in the AFC.

"I think the league is still sleeping on us after what happened last year. We've got the talent on both sides of the field. We can line up against anyone one-on-one and feel good about our chances of winning."

That receiving corps versus your secondary should be an interesting battle.

Burrow Impresses, but Bengals fall to Chargers
Rookie Joe Burrow is already getting the hang of things at the NFL level.

Facing one of the best secondaries in football, the first overall pick in the 2020 NFL draft was calm under pressure, making all the throws everyone saw him make at the college level. However, his impressive debut will wind up as part of a loss as the Bengals could not hang with the Los Angeles Chargers in the latter half of the game.

Burrow gave the Bengals their first lead of the game after hitting A.J. Green in stride for a 79-yard touchdown. Green, who was being covered by Michael Davis for most of the game, led all players with 11 receptions, 184 yards, and 2 touchdowns in his first game since December 2, 2018. It would be the only points Cincinnati scored until the final minute of the contest.

Los Angeles exploded for 17 points in the 4th quarter to pull away from Cincinnati, kick-started by Desmond King II's 104-yard interception return for a touchdown. The Chargers' secondary stepped up when it mattered most, preventing a Bengals score that would have allowed them to regain the lead. The Chargers were winning 12-7 leading up to the defensive touchdown.

The offense was powered by a strong performance from Austin Ekeler, who is no longer sharing a backfield with Melvin Gordon III. Ekeler led the Chargers in both rushing yards (77) and receiving yards (70). Tyrod Taylor was responsible for two interceptions in the redzone - both a result of dropped passes - but managed to add a passing touchdown to his stat sheet in the 4th quarter after finding Keenan Allen on a slant pattern.

Despite letting Burrow throw for 345 yards and 2 touchdowns, the Chargers managed to negate the rookie's production by limiting the Bengals to just 13 points. Part of it had to do with taking the Bengals out of field goal range following sacks and penalties. Another part had to do with allowing the Bengals to rush for just 9 yards as a team. Joe Mixon carried the ball 14 times for 11 yards. Randy Bullock missed both field goal attempts.

Uchenna Nwosu sacked Burrow twice. Davis led the Chargers with 11 tackles. Derwin James Jr. recorded 3 tackles for loss. Rookie linebacker Kenneth Murray, who saw a lot of snaps in Los Angeles' nickel packages, finished with 5 tackles.

The Chargers will look to carry their momentum into next week's contest against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, the defending Super Bowl champions.

Brees, Saints introduce Brady to NFC South
New starting quarterbacks went 3-5 in the first week of the 2020 regular season. One of those losses includes Tom Brady, who struggled against the New Orleans Saints in his debut as a Tampa Bay Buccaneer. Brady completed just 48 percent of his passes for 133 yards.

The down game could be viewed as a concern for some NFL analysts, which question whether Brady still has any gas left in the tank as a quarterback. Brady turned 43 years old this August. Fortunately for Brady and the Buccaneers, there are still 15 games left to be played. Drew Brees, on the other hand, continues to roll on as a 41-year old. He threw for 345 yards and 2 touchdowns to begin his quest towards what he hopes to be another Super Bowl appearance before he retires. Saints head coach Sean Payton and others have previously hinted that this is Brees' final season.

Starting quarterbacks on the winning end includes Cam Newton, who completed 32 passes for 366 yards and 2 touchdowns for the New England Patriots. His team soundly defeated rookie Tua Tagovailoa (87 yards, 3 interceptions, 16.0 QB rating) and the Miami Dolphins. Philip Rivers helped the Colts squeak by in Jacksonville. Teddy Bridgewater also led the Carolina Panthers past the Las Vegas Raiders.

Nightmares in New York and Chicago
The Giants and Bears were both blanked in their first games of the season, setting the tone for what could be abysmal years for both teams if they can't find a solution to their problems. New York turned the ball over 4 times and allowed 33 points in the first half to the Steelers. Chicago thought acquiring Nick Foles from the Jacksonville Jaguars would at least give them some stability at the position given Mitchell Trubisky's wildly inconsistent play last year...Foles ended up throwing 4 interceptions against the Detroit Lions, widely considered to be a bottom-feeder this season according to most major media outlets.

Chiefs shocked by Texans as they begin their title defense
Kansas City is a favorite to represent the AFC in the Super Bowl once again this season, but perhaps they overlooked the Houston Texans, which is notably without De'Andre Hopkins (traded to Cardinals). Despite having the upper hand in every team statistic, the Chiefs only scored 20 points. They'll try to rebound on the road next week when they visit the Los Angeles Chargers in an early divisional tilt.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
Injuries continue to pile on
The preseason took away Kyler Murray's sophomore season, and the regular season won't be any less forgiving. All-Pro offensive tackle Tyron Smith will not be with the Cowboys for the remainder of the regular season after tearing his rotator cuff. He could return for the postseason if Dallas can make it that far. 49ers receiver Deebo Samuel partially tore his ACL. He's slated to undergo surgery and is expected to miss about 3 months. Clay Matthews, a free agent acquisition for Carolina, has been placed on injured reserve after tearing his PCL. Anthony Barr was also placed on injured reserve for the same injury. Alvin Kamara is out for about 2 months with a foot injury.

Derwin James is a Defensive Player of the Year Candidate

Image
By Fapplatte

With dreads in his hair, speed in his cleats and flair in his game, Derwin James came to epitomise the Florida State program which has consistently churned out elite defensive backs in the NFL.

Entering his third season in the NFL, it’s a crucial one for James – who earned Pro Bowl honours during his rookie campaign before his sophomore season was derailed with a stress foot fracture.

There may not be a better safety in the league who excels in the combination of coverage skills, tracking speed and late game clutchness. James has it all.

Cincinnati struggled to get the run game going, one of the reasons can be pointed at James, was in the box and came away with three tackles for a loss in their season opening win. His nine tackles were second on the team.

The Super Bowl champion is up next. Derwin James should be shadowing Travis Kelce the whole game. He caused fits for the tight end back in the 2018 season. When James was absent in the Chiefs victory back in November, Kelce went off for a 10 reception, 92 yard game.

Make no mistake, the Chargers may have one of the best defenses in league with the likes of Joey Bosa, Melvin Ingram and Desmond King. However, it’s James, who roams the back end of their defense who will have the most influence as to how the Chargers fair this season.

What better way would there be to introduce SoFi Stadium than by defeating the Super Bowl champions?

The Los Angeles Chargers will attempt to do just that in their first home game in the multi-billion dollar arena that is stationed in Inglewood, California. The Chargers are coming off a 29-13 win in Cincinnati, highlighted by their impressive run defense against Joe Mixon and the Bengals' backfield. They'll contend with Damien Williams, Patrick Mahomes, and rookie Clyde Edwards-Helaire next. The rookie from LSU scored 2 goal line touchdowns last week in Kansas City's loss to the Houston Texans.

But the bigger threat is Kansas City's passing attack, engineered by Mahomes. With Tyreek Hill, Sammy Watkins, Demarcus Robinson, Mecole Hardman, and Travis Kelce as his weapons, the former MVP has more than plenty of options to pick from to attack the Chargers' secondary. Seen to be a strength of their's heading into the 2020 campaign, the Chargers allowed Joe Burrow to throw for 345 yards last week, with A.J. Green being the recipient of more than half of those yards.

Los Angeles settled for 5 field goals last week against the Bengals. To keep pace with the Chiefs, they'll need to capitalize on red zone opportunities by scoring touchdowns.

The Chiefs losing last week came as a surprise to many, and they will be eager to shed any notions of a down year following the franchise's first Lombardi Trophy in half a century. A win over the Chargers could set the tone for the rest of the season when it comes to the AFC West division.

Defense & Big Plays help Chiefs past Chargers
The Chargers will have to wait another week before winning their first home game in SoFi Stadium.

The team came out flat offensively for the second consecutive time this season, and against the Kansas City Chiefs it was detrimental. Los Angeles did not score until Justin Jackson punched in a goal line touchdown with 1 minute and 14 seconds remaining in the first half. By then, the Chiefs had already scored 20 points. They didn't wait until the second half to continue adding points - Patrick Mahomes orchestrated a drive that led to a 53-yard field goal by Harrison Butker to give Kansas City the last laugh heading into the locker room.

"Chunk" plays have characterized Kansas City's offense ever since Mahomes took over as the team's starting quarterback. The Chiefs opened the game with a 43-yard completion to Sammy Watkins. Later in the game, Tyreek Hill caught a 52 yard pass. Patrick Mahomes fooled the entire defense on a 57-yard run, which led to a touchdown by Clyde Edwards-Helaire. The game was effectively iced when Damien Williams took a handoff from his team's own 4 yard line and broke through the Chargers' defense for a 41-yard run. That drive ended with a 28-yard field goal from Butker.

To rub some salt into the wound, safety Juan Thornhill capped off Los Angeles' miserable day with a pick six.

Nothing seemed to go right for the Chargers in the 4th quarter after cutting the lead to 23-15. Taylor was sacked 5 times. Playing behind early forced the Chargers offense to rely heavily on the quarterback's arm, resulting in a 50% completion rate. Los Angeles gained 249 yards on offense, less than half of Kansas City's output (503). The defense had no answer for the dynamic Mahomes and Kansas City's spread offense. Several positives include Keenan Allen (7 catches, 88 yards, 2 touchdowns) and Derwin James Jr. (15 tackles, forced fumble + recovery).

The win gives the Chiefs an early lead in the AFC West. The Chargers will look to rebound against the Carolina Panthers next week while Kansas City faces the Baltimore Ravens in a primetime matchup.
