49ers defeat Chargers in final preseason game
The Los Angeles Chargers fell short of finishing with an undefeated preseason, losing to the reigning NFC-champion San Francisco 49ers in their final tune up game before the 2020 regular season.

Head coach Anthony Lynn opted to rest most of his starters with the exception of several players, including quarterbacks Justin Herbert and Tyrod Taylor. Throughout the preseason and training camp, the rookie and veteran have dueled for the team's starting quarterback position, with both having their ups and downs. Herbert impressed last week in extended playing time but fell short of expectations this week, finishing with 46 yards and an interception. Taylor led the Chargers to their lone points in the 2nd quarter.

Rookie linebacker Kenneth Murray did his best to wrap up a solid preseason and secure a starting role. He finished with two tackles. Nick Vigil led the team with 9 tackles and a sack.

In contrast, Kyle Shanahan did not shy away from giving his starters additional playing time in the final preseason contest. With the starting unit on the field for the first quarter, the 49ers scored 24 points before Shanahan decided that was enough.

Lynn and the Chargers have until Sunday night to trim their roster down to 53.

Stock Up
1. Halfback Justin Jackson has surely cemented himself as the team's number 2 running back behind Austin Ekeler after another solid performance, recording 48 yards and a touchdown on 8 carries. Joshua Kelley also had another good game, finishing with 41 yards and a score. The trio of Ekeler, Jackson, and Kelley has looked more than adequate in the preseason, which bodes well for the Chargers' rushing attack.

2. We might not have seen the last of Dillon Mitchell, who was invited to training camp earlier this year. The receiver caught a team-high 6 passes for 61 yards and a touchdown to wrap up his preseason. Of all the receivers, he and David Sills V, another free agent signing, have done the most to justify spots on the Chargers' 53-man roster.

3. Nasir Adderley was on the outside looking in when the preseason first started. He may now find himself as one of the team's starting safeties. With another 8 tackles to add to his preseason stat line, Adderley finishes 3rd on the team with 21 tackles to go along with a sack and interception. Rayshawn Jenkins, who played well last year to gain the trust of the coaches, finishes the preseason with 7 tackles.

Stock Down
1. Herbert's had his good moments and his bad moments. Nothing went right for him against the 49ers' second team defense. The Chargers have made it clear since drafting Herbert that he is the team's future, but they'll need to see him mature and become more consistent.

2. Whoever was playing defense when the Niners scored 24 points to open the game certainly has to be disappointed with the way they played. This includes cornerback Brandon Facyson, who completed whiffed on a ball that led directly to Deebo Samuel's 66-yard touchdown to get the scoring started.

Chargers finalize 53-man roster, release depth chart
The Los Angeles Chargers have trimmed their roster to 53 men and have released the 2020 depth chart for the team's season opener against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Notable players listed as a starter include wide receiver Dillon Mitchell in the slot, who signed with the Chargers weeks before training camp began. Mitchell was an impressive performer in the preseason. In 4 games, he finished second on the team in receptions and yards and was tied for 1st in touchdowns. The receiver was drafted in the 7th round by the Minnesota Vikings last year following a standout career with the Oregon Ducks, where he set the school record for receiving yards in a season. He'll line up with Keenan Allen and Mike Williams.

Slot receiver was one of the more hotly-contested battles for the Chargers, with Mitchell and rookies K.J. Hill and Joe Reed all vying for the starting role. Head coach Anthony Lynn was quick to express confidence in all 4 men and told reporters that each will have a role in the team's new offensive scheme, which was partly displayed in the preseason. The Chargers also decided to retain David Sills V on the roster after he finished 1st in all major receiving categories. He's listed as the team's 4th receiver, backing up Allen. Surprisingly, the Chargers released Andre Patton.

Mitchell's teammate at Oregon, rookie quarterback Justin Herbert, will start the season on the sidelines as Lynn named Tyrod Taylor the starter for Los Angeles' first contest. To his credit, Herbert had some stellar moments in the preseason and immediately became a fan favorite. However, his inconsistencies were also an eye-opener. Taylor likewise had a similar preseason, but his familiarity with Lynn's offense likely played a role in him gaining the upper hand.

Nasir Adderley made the leap over Rayshawn Jenkins to be named the team's starting free safety. The former second round pick was one of the Chargers' best preseason performers on defense, and he'll look to capitalize on the situation after missing most of last season with a hamstring injury. Denzel Perryman's play also earned him the starting role at middle linebacker, a position that he and rookie Kenneth Murray had been competing for. As far as Murray is concerned, Lynn and defensive coordinator Gus Bradley said that there are plans for the athletic linebacker.

"Kenneth is too good of a player to be kept on the bench," Lynn told reporters. "He'll be featured in our sets one way or another. I trust that coach Bradley will use the kid's skill to his advantage."

Sam Tevi is listed as the team's first string left tackle, and Michael Davis will line up opposite of Casey Hayward as the team's second cornerback. Chris Harris Jr. will man the nickel role as expected. Punter Ty Long was one of the team's notable cuts, with the Chargers opting to keep Johnny Townsend after a great preseason. His younger brother, Tommy Townsend, is currently listed as the starting punter for the Kansas City Chiefs.
