As War on I-4 draws massive ratings, it's participants begin flirting with SEC, Independent route as exodus plan from American Athletic Conference
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

With talks of USF and UCF's football programs joining the Big 12 circulating the last few months, Friday night's duel certainly put it all into hyper drive. The epic game that captivated the nation on Black Friday, with USF coming out on top 34-27, could have belonged to the Big 12. The eyes of the 4.642 million viewers who watched the game, which was more than both Texas versus Texas Tech and West Virginia versus Oklahoma, could’ve been fixated on two Big 12 teams — with the conference’s signature roman numeral “12” gleaming on every jersey.

Another conference seems to have tossed their hats into the circle or rather the circle has started to draw itself around them as USF's social media was quick to announce a home-and-home series with Florida, starting in 2018 in Gainesville. The team is also rumored to be in the works with scheduling a "multi-year" agreement to play Alabama as well in an attempt to beef up their schedule and a more southern flavor to their competition.

These talks have also started rumors that if the Big 12 were too hesitant to jump on the UCF and USF bandwagon, could the SEC perhaps also be in play? At this point, all signs point to the SEC staying put for the foreseeable future but if the SEC were to want to expand once more, it stands to reason that two of the top Group of Five schools in UCF and USF would be top candidates especially when you consider the media markets.

According to a source close to USF's football program, head coach Malcolm Francois' extension last year came with the "understanding" that the team would make "bold attempts" to leave the American Athletic Conference, perhaps even becoming a free agent as an Independent in order to bolster the program's prestige.

"I don't see USF being in the AAC in two years," said a source within the American Athletic Conference main offices, "I think that's a reality that [AAC] has to come to grips with and if they're gone, so is UCF and vice-versa so at this point, it's a game of chicken to see which other conference is going to step up first."

The Bulls will be playing for their third straight American Athletic Conference championship in a week.
