Bulls land another top 100 talent in 4-star defensive back Joe Jackson
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

USF is a little more than an hour drive from one of the nation's most elite football factories and they haven't been shy in the past about dipping into that talent pool to land some talent. This season is no different as USF landed their third commitment from IMG Academy in 4-star cornerback Joe Jackson III.

Jackson, who picked the Bulls over Texas A&M and Texas, is originally from Omaha, Nebraska and is teammates with Bulls commits WR Marques Iosefo and QB Jeff Jones. Jackson leads the Ascenders with five interceptions on the season after struggling early on in his career at IMG as he adjusted to the jump in competition.

Blessed with good size for the position at six-foot and 186 pounds, Jackson is a pretty physical corner that mainly plays press coverage, both in the slot and on the outside. As is customer, he'll most likely start inside for his first few seasons at USF which shouldn't be a problem as he'd had no qualms about being physical against the run while at IMG. The Bulls are currently a bit undersized at the position, creating an opening for Jackson to perhaps see the field earlier than expected despite not having the elite top end speed that USF's other corners have.

Jackson is the Bulls' sixteenth commitment of the class and maybe their last with just twelve seniors on the roster. Even with a few extra spots with anticipated early departures and transfers, signing any more players could create a numbers crunch. Of USF's sixteen commitments, nine are in the 247 Sports top 100 rankings and all but three are in the top 247. The only ones outside of it are two offensive line projects in James Cochran (#29) and Dave Riley (#726) along with local linebacker prospect Stephen Dixon (#258) who barely misses the cut. Ten of their sixteen commits are also top ten at their respective position, not including five-star Kevin Morris who is the 12th ranked athlete in this class but a higher ranked recruit (#27) than the 10th ranked receiver in this class Blair Thomas (#37).

Simply put, this is a loaded class, maybe one of the better ones that USF has ever landed. They're currently the top class in the country but could see some competition in Alabama and Texas, who are likely to have bigger classes number wise. Currently, only Texas has more five-stars (4) than USF this cycle.

Bye Week Report: Don't hold your applause, Roger Shaw Jr's encore might be better than the original
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

USF spent the entire off-season trying their best to rest Heisman winning running back Roger Shaw Jr. who didn't play in the spring game and was often missing from the public portion of practices. There were also cryptic quotes from Shaw Jr's father about his son's usage last season and the tole it took on his body. The stage was set for an expected dip in production and opportunities for the junior as he prepares for the draft....we think.

Shaw is averaging nearly a full rushing yard more per game this season, 0.1 yard more per carry, on pace for four more rushing touchdowns and perhaps the biggest improvement of them all, has already eclipsed his receiving totals from last season and is USF's leading receiver.

Roger Shaw Jr. is very good at football, folks.

Will it be enough to repeat as a Heisman? Alabama's Steven Russell makes a good claim as a fourth-year starter for perhaps college football's premier team. Russell is an all-time great and voters might see fit to reward him. There's also a name that Bulls fans are familiar with in Ohio State's Brian Anderson who is averaging 254.4 yards per game with 26 touchdowns and just one interception. If the Buckeyes run the table, he'll make a good case for the Heisman but at the end of the day, no one has been able to match Shaw's productivity.

Nov. 26 at UCF (4-4) -- 7:00 PM EST

Biggest takeaways from first half of the season
  • USF's defense can still play at an elite level
Lost in the Hail Mary and the loss against Alabama is that previous to that play, USF had held the nation's fifth ranked offense to just 21 points and nearly shut them out in the first half.

USF is a top ten defense in total, scoring and rushing defense with a dip this season in passing defense as they lost a lot of firepower from a pass rushing standpoint. They've managed to integrate true freshmen Clayton Bradford (12 tackles), Richie Cowan (23 tackles, sack) and Zach Mack (27 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 INT) into the defense without too big of a drop off and that might be Bob Shoop's biggest accomplishment this season.

Once the likes of Curtis Carter, Mark Johnson, David Daniel and Kelvin Hunter move on to the NFL, it'll be Bradford, Cowan and Mack that lead the next version of this defense and right now, it looks like it's going to keep being an elite defense.
    -
  • More than a game manager, Todd Woods can be an All-SEC at QB
The nation's second leading passer? Fifth-year senior from Iowa that was a three-star prospect. Woods has surpassed all expectations this season, throwing for 2,448 yards and 21 touchdowns in what has been an efficient passing attack.

Woods runs into the same problem James Brown did where his arm talent can't cut the checks that his decision making is signing. He's had a few duds of a game but when Woods is on, he's on and one of the better quarterbacks in the SEC.

Thomas Jackson's injury has helped Woods get a firm grasp on that starting job and he's turned that into maybe some NFL looks as well as postseason award considerations.
    -
  • USF is loaded at receiver with even more help on the way
USF currently has three five-star recruits committed to them at receiver, joining a roster that has six players and five receivers averaging over 50 yards per game receiving.

Even if you exclude Roger Shaw from the stat, you still end up with Robert Givens, Courtney Lane, Brent Cunningham and Max McDonald, all with eligibility left to return next season as arguably the best WR corps in the country.

If Lane does declare early, Bryan Mangum is a more than capable replacement, shining in his time in the starting lineup while Cunningham was out with an injury. It also helps to have guys like Louis Dukes IV and Travis Lewis, two former five-stars, as backup options.

What to watch for in second half of the season
  • Will teams start to expose USF's size problem at corner?
The Bulls have very good corners in Damien Ford (5-foot-10), Kareem Hunter (5-foot-9), Richie Cowan (5-foot-10) and Adam Kelly (5-foot-11), however, they're pretty small with Kelly being their tallest corner currently in the rotation.

Miami has a top receiver in David Mitchell at six-foot-three while the Seminoles have two in Dan Cowan and Jeff McDaniel. So far, teams haven't been able to consistently exploit this but as the season is coming to and end and there's more and more tape, the formula to beat USF is clear. Take deep shot and hope for the best. Teams have tried to beat them with paper cuts but with a strong linebacking corps and talented edge rushers, they are more than content to just line up once more and force teams to sustain long drives that result in three points while their offense does the same, except theirs end with a four-yard touchdown run that ate up half of the quarter.
    -
  • Can Hughes get it going as a pass rusher?
Former five-star converted linebacker has four sacks on the season as USF's starting defensive end and a reason why they are one of the nation's best at stopping the run.

Hughes has struggled with missed tackles while at USF, something that has followed him from linebacker to defensive end this season. His ten tackles for loss could almost be doubled if he becomes a surer tackler and he can sometimes disappear as a pass rusher. His running mates inside in Kevin Simon and Dwayne Callahan have five and four sacks respectively while Aaron Spurlock leads the team with 8 tackles. Hughes figures to get some one-on-one matchups down the stretch, can he turn those into TFLs and sacks?

USF had their choice of quarterback and went with IMG's Jones, will it pan out?
Eddie Fernandez -- 247 Sports USF Insider

Three of 247 Sports top seven quarterbacks -- Frank Buchanan, Jeff Jones and Jesse King -- took multiple unofficial visits to USF and many within industry felt that whoever USF zeroed in on, would end up in Tampa as they were the preferred landing spots for all three during the summer.

The Bulls decided to pass on the Tampa native in King as well as the nation's top ranked quarterback in Buchanan and went with Jones. King committed to Miami and Buchanan recommitted to South Alabama, where his uncle Cole Buchanan is the quarterbacks coach. There have been rumors of Hendrix potentially being offered the offensive coordinator gig at Middle Tennessee State, his alma mater, should current Blue Raiders OC Kyle Flood get a head coaching job after leading them to the nation's 15th ranked offense. Could that lead to Buchanan once again spurning the hometown Jaguars? Possibly but one place we know he won't be at is Tampa and that's by choice of the Bulls. Was it the right one?

A quick scouting report on the three quarterbacks with their fates -- for the most part -- sealed.

Frank Buchanan
6'5", 208lbs
Montevallo, AL [Montevallo HS]
NTL Rank: 32rd
AL Rank: 3rd
POS Rank: 1st
Athletic Profile: 4.62 40-yd dash | 255 Bench Press Max | 300 Squat Max
Scouting Grade: B Speed | C Agility | C Acceleration | B Arm Strength | C Accuracy
Scouting Report: Impressively-built QB with requisite height and frame potential. True dual-threat with necessary tools as a passer and runner. Athleticism bears out in both departments. Live-armed and flashes encouraging velocity over the middle of the field in the short-to-intermediate passing game. Requisite arm strength translates to vertical passing game. More productive and accurate as a junior with completion percentage seeing 6-point jump. Dangerous on the run and makes plays on designed carries and when improvising. Buys time with his legs and extends plays to find receivers. Shows very good top-end speed relative to the QB position. Fluid enough to make defenders miss in tight quarters. Can improve ball security, particularly when on the run. Footwork technique and consistency can improve. Possesses long-term NFL Draft potential, possibly to the top of the draft.

Jeff Jones
6'2", 193lbs
Port Charlotte, FL [Port Charlotte HS, IMG Academy]
NTL Rank: 47th
FL Rank: 6th
POS Rank: 2nd
Athletic Profile: 4.84 40-yd dash | 255 Bench Press Max | 220 Squat Max
Scouting Grade: C Speed | D Agility | C Acceleration | B Arm Strength | C Accuracy
Scouting Report: Lacks size of prototypical pocket passer. Has some dual threat ability. Runs 4.8 in 40. Productive in high school with 6:1 TD/INT ratio. Quick release. Superb touch on intermediate passes. Drops balls between linebackers and defensive backs. High understanding of offensive concepts. Pocket presence is impressive. Feels pressure and moves in pocket. Can extend plays. Arm strength needs work. Accuracy is inconsistent on deep balls. Uses a lot of body power to make throws down field and on deep outs. Multi-year starter at high-level program. Projects as an impact upper tier Power 5 starter and future mid-to-high round NFL draft pick.

Jesse King
6'3", 230lbs
Tampa, FL [Tampa Tech HS]
NTL Rank: 155th
FL Rank: 16th
POS Rank: 7th
Athletic Profile: 5.02 40-yd dash | 255 Bench Press Max | 275 Squat Max
Scouting Grade: D Speed | C Agility | C Acceleration | B Arm Strength | B Accuracy
Scouting Report: Big, classically built quarterback prospect. Came from a background of playing other positions, but has quickly taken to quarterback and developed a great deal mechanically between his sophomore and junior year of high school. Has a strong arm with good velocity on his passes and high school offense allows him to make throws to every part of the field. Very good at off-platform throws and having to change arm angles to make throws without needing to set his feet. But can also stand in the pocket and deliver the ball on time. Seems to have a good understanding of timing and anticipation. Has smarts, work ethic and general intangibles. Coordinated athlete with his feet so he can slide around and make throws while on the move but is not as much of a running threat at this age. Projects as a college starter, potentially an early one and has the traits to play on Sundays.
