Nussmeier on notice as Francois Sr. doesn't hold back on displeasure with the offense
Johnny Murray -- The Tampa Bay Times Sports Columnist

University of South Florida offensive coordinator Doug Nussmeier may very well be a head coach by this time next year and after coordinating USF's offense to a potential top ten finish, it would be with merit.

None of that was evident on Wednesday during Francois Sr's third availability with the press since Saturday's loss to Miami.

"I don't know what we're doing on offense," said Francois Sr. who was relatively mild tempered during the post-game press conference on Saturday night and again on Monday, as he was complimentary to Miami's defense and not overly critical of USF's offense that hasn't scored over 28 points since October.

"We're just throwing [things] at the wall, play calling wise, and hoping it sticks. There's no flow, no rhythm and when we do get something going, it's someone's turn to miss a block or miss a read, drop a ball. We've got a young offensive line and a lot of young guys in general out there but too much talent to be scoring twenty something points, fourteen points in a half. I don't know what that is, that's not USF football."

Nussmeier replaced Mario Greer this past off-season who took the head coaching job at Florida and brought with him a more pro-style offense than the spread offense that USF ran with great success under Greer and Malcolm Francois Jr. as Jeff Jones rewrote the record book. While Nussmeier got off to a hot start with a sixty-three point performance against Mississippi State, the offense hasn't been the same since the bye week four weeks ago. Since then, USF has scored 28, 21 and 19 points after scoring 42 and 45 points in their previous two games.

Nussmeier credited defenses to adjusting to their offense and declined to comment on Francois Sr's remarks.

"We have a good relationship," Nussmeier said when pressed about if he was surprised by Francois Sr's comments on the play calling, "He's been a play caller before so we definitely exchange ideas and thoughts, I prefer to keep those private between me and him."

Could this be the beginning of the end for Nussmeier or just an off the cuff remark by some frustrated coaches? It was a strange fit when he was hired as he's not familiar with the south Florida area -- recruiting wise -- and is reputed to be a less than enthusiastic recruiter evident with him not being listed as a primary recruiter for any recruits this cycle.

USF outlasts Aggies in 42-35 shootout to clinch SEC East but lose Jones
Jeff Jones will likely go down as one of the most prolific passers in recent college football history. If today was his last performance in college football, he went out like he came in.

Jones threw for 391 yards, completing 80 percent of his passes and throwing five touchdowns in USF's 42-35 win over Texas A&M to send USF to yet another SEC Championship Game before he left the game with an injury in the fourth quarter.

"We'll see how serious it is tonight when we get back," said head coach Malcolm Francois Sr. of Jones' injury. Francois Sr. described it as a back injury but did not go into details.

It wasn't a pretty start for USF as A&M took an early 7-0 lead with an 87-yard run by Todd Lake. Even as the USF defense settled down, USF's offense still struggled to put points on the board, twice turning it over on downs in the second half as the Aggies extended their lead to 17-7 with 1:05 left in the first half.

Jones started finding some success in the middle of the Aggies' 4-2-5 defense, connecting with Marques Iosefo for two first downs on the ensuing drive before finding him in the endzone for a 10-yard score to close the game.

Even with an A&M field goal to end the half, USF was rolling. The defense forced three straight punts in the third quarter with two of them leading to touchdown passes from Jones as USF took the 28-20 lead heading in the fourth.

Following an interception by Wesley Adams, Jones would throw his final pass of the day, a touchdown to Iosefo before being hit by a Texas A&M defensive lineman. Jones landed awkwardly and needed help coming off the field and did not return.

Joey Spence filled in for Jones and after USF recovered the ensuing onside kick in a seven point game, Spence connected with Chris Wallace in the corner of the endzone on third down to put the game away with 1:10 left.

The Aggies did score once more in garbage time.

USF QB Jones to miss postseason following season ending back surgery
Anthony Washington -- The Tampa Bay Chronicles

University of South Florida junior quarterback and potential first round pick Jeff Jones will miss the SEC Championship Game against Tennessee and USF's bowl game after the two-time O'Brien Award winner underwent back surgery this past week, the school announced.

Jones left last week's game against Texas A&M in the second half and did not return as he had been battling a nagging back injury that dates back to his freshman season where he threw for an NCAA record 5,988 yards. Jones followed that freshman campaign by throwing for fifty-seven touchdowns last year and 39 touchdowns this season, shattering the USF record book in the process.

It remains to be seen how this impacts Jones' draft decision and stock. A lack of elite arm talent and a small frame at six-foot-two and 194 pounds have some pundits questioning his pro potential despite his jaw dropping numbers in college. The expectations internally prior to the injury was for Jones to declare for the draft although Jones himself has remained coy with the media when asked about it. He has not spoken to the media since his injury and likely won't until after a decision is made.

Replacing Jones in the SEC Championship Game and the bowl season is former five-star quarterback and true freshman Joey Spence. Spence has thrown for 450 yards and six touchdowns to three interceptions on forty attempts this season, mainly in mop up duty. Spence completed 5 of 7 passes against Texas A&M, including a touchdown.
